I was 31 in 1985 married, 3 kids under 5 and wanted this Buick. Car seat laws were not as strict as today. My wife thought it was a bit too expensive, so I bought it’s sister, 1985 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royals Brougham Coupe. It was about $500-$1,000 cheaper but except for cosmetics, it was the same car, frame, chassis, engine 5 litre/307 ci V8, 4 Bbl carb. Velour pillowed interior, AM/FM Cassette stereo, AC. Absolutely gorgeous, luxurious, and comfortable. Had it for 8 years before selling it and moving on to SUVs.

What a stunning find. My grandparents had this car, in a 1984 version… it was light yellow with light green - it was a stunning car. I do remember it had the V6 and my grandfather always complained about the power - given he traded in his Chrysler New Yorker that had a 440 ha. He bought the Buick because my grandmother loved it. I imagine Bill driving a beautiful classic like this…

That ivory on the blue velour with blue vinyl top is a looker. I had an 85 bronze with dark tan velour interior with a tan vinyl top. It was a nice car. The gas gauge quit working on it and I ran out of gas driving that car in the middle of rural Kansas in 1994. Thanks to the kindness of a trucker I was able to get a gas can and get back on the road back to Colorado. It was a quiet cruiser with seats that would leave you with zero fatigue after a day behind the wheel.

In the early 1990's I owned a used 1983 Buick Le Sabre Limited coupe. It had the velour living room front seats, full power and landau roof. The only drawbacks were the lousy water based paints GM was using back then and the original owners engine choice of the 3.8 liter V6. Although it would never have been first off the line it was more than a decent runner at highway speeds. It was also the best snow car I've ever owned with rear wheel drive. I got a lot of good miles out of her during the years I owned her. This video brought back a lot of memories since not much had changed in 2 years.

I have on of these. I drive it back and forth to work 5 days a week to preserve my W212 Mercedes E Class as my retirement car. This is my beater now- has been for about 3 years . 22 years ago when I bought it, it was not a beater. The PA rust belt has taken it's toll and this will likely be it's last year of use. It's a tank, and pretty reliable. No power out of the 307, not now, not ever. Even if I had the deepest of pockets I would buy one like this ready to go and forego a restoration on cars of this genre. Nice find. Thanks.

I'm afraid the Canadians would have been scandalized sitting in those rolls of decadent stuffed velvet! Mom later moved up to the '83 Park Avenue. That might also be in the running for the last unapologetically American car. Another great car review from The Master!

That dash looks really great at night...the 2 large circles & central PDRL are quite attractive. The 2 little turning light indicators compliment the design (even if it’s ridiculous that the right circle is just a fuel indicator). The exterior was well done: chrome, roofline, deck, hood - all nice proportions. I especially like the belt on the landau roof. The rear non-functional windows support that little rise in the lateral line at the rear deck. It’s handsome if a bit plain...with a swig of Soviet whiskey it looks even better. Love that it is body on frame & has an Olds power plant....It’s comfort came thru the video - you could almost feel it - when it was on the road. Buick died poor but his name is on a bunch of great cars...

Bill, thanks again. I'd rather sit on these seats than any being produced now. These are really good cars and will easily last 250K miles and longer with good maintenance. The Olds 307 engine is excellent too. And the parts don't cost much. The B-body cars are what GM did best and they sustained GM for decades. These cars have everything that we don't have in cars today. Just one of these things is arriving at your destination relaxed and refreshed.

Bill I absolutely love your videos. It helps that we like many of the same cars. This time you did another car that I used to own. Mine was even a white 2 door but it had grey interior. I lusted after those wheels though which mine did not have. I always felt like the CE was Buick's way of getting one more year of the big RWD luxo model since they put the Park Avenue interior in it and the Park Avenue had already been downsized to a FWD car for '85. They did offer the electronic touch climate control which mine had along with the twilight sentinel and leather seats. I was 19 when I bought that car and it was only a few years old. People used to think I was driving daddy's car.... to which I said, daddy wishes he had such a nice car! God I loved that car! Keep the stories coming Bill!

Another one of your hand & foot collector specials, Bill! Beautifully styled exterior and if you overlook the pillow lounge chair interior, an attractive instrument cluster and dash with a very large fuel gauge.

I took my road test in my moms car same exact car that’s how you learned how to drive in a big boat like that. That car was comfortable though as a kid riding in it.

What a fantastic ride! Thank you Bill for the excellent review of this B-body beauty, you always have incredible content in your video reviews. When you drive a car like that one has to wonder why would you buy a modern car. They build cars to break today, so they can hose people for parts and repairs. When it comes down to it the decision to buy, restore, and daily drive an American car from the 80's back just makes more sense. But most folks today want to drive an SUV, a vehicle that no matter where it's made, look all the same... ugly, no style, cookie cutter, turds. ...but there so much safer, blah, blah, blah. lol

Awesome video Bill. Mercedes actually perpetuated the myth that the 5.7L Diesel was a converted 350 gas unit. Actually it wasn't and the 5.7L Diesel was designed as a diesel. The first generation 5.7L diesel was a total disaster that blew head gaskets due to head bold issues. Typical GM they revised the block and created the 5.7L DX engine in late 1981. They steadily improved that engine by 1984, but it was too late..too many failures and they pulled it from the market. I had two DXs and they were good, smooth, but slow. Very economcial though.

Do you think GM should have turbocharged the diesel?

In old GM - Buick was 'the doctor's car' - Olds was always 'younger' or garish, or 'not quite there yet' depending on your take. Cadillac was inherited wealth, CEO and/or the movie crowd.

I owned one of these cars. Best car I ever owned. 178k without a problem. Only complaint was lack of power in the mountains.
