( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2019 Ram 2500 HD Laramie Loinghorn Mega Cab with a 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel engine is luxurious and expensive at nearly $100,000 Canadian, but how well does it tow? Stephen takes the truck out for an MPG test, both unladen and towing.

My 2018 Laramie crew cab short bed diesel pulling a 33ft 10k pound trailer on a 1700 mile trip from Utah to South Dakota and other points in between averaged 11 MPG but our average interstate speed was around 75 miles per hour. On small trips unloaded I get pretty consistent 21-22 MPG that’s at 70-75 miles per hour if I drive 80 then it’s more like 18 MPG.

Speaking of tow haul mode. I found on my 2018, that it gets better MPG in tow haul than it does with it off. The trans often seems to be in the wrong gear for the best economy actually lowering the economy. While You don't need the torque and quite the level of throttle response while emptyish its extremely noticeable how it behaves.

Just a FYI; you can't use the VIN lookup to find exact payload specs for your truck. It's not accurate, it does not account for the various features of your exact truck (despite using the VIN). Always use the sticker on the door, there are differences of 300 pounds or more between the sticker and the site.

sorry, I am not a fan of capless fuel systems, I disliked it when Ford started using them (not sure who first started going capless) and I don't like that it is spreading. I admit I have not used them so maybe I am mistaken, but when I was young and we lived in an apartment complex a kid got the bright idea to stuff acorns down the filler tube of my families car. After that they purchased lockable gas caps that required a key to open, Without that option is there not a way to keep your fuel system safe? Does the capless system keep people from stealing gas from your tanks?

You just purchase a billeted aluminum cap for them, there are some awesome ones on amazon for 20 bucks, magnetic backs so you can just put them on the backside of the gas door while you are filling. I forgot to put mine back in once and drove for about 15 minutes at 70 mph in my ecodiesel, saw it, got off at the next exit, the gas cap was still there. As far as people stealing gas, the configuration of the system no longer allows people do do that, you can't get a hose down the line.

I’ve noticed a trend. But yes they’re beautiful, the Cummins kicks ass, and the mega cab is genius. Despite the fact they still ride like shit I’m probably going to buy one for the mega cab.

I purchased this almost exact truck in August for $69,500. Not cheap of course, but not close to the Canadian 100k, and a good bit lower than US 81k. Less options can get you way lower. @@MONGO573 , They cost that much because they're worth it. $80k (US) is a real bargain when you factor in everything these trucks do. In the '50's, '60's and '70's a top of the line car or truck was still more than most people made in a year and they barely had brakes. The technology, comfort and capability in these new trucks is nearly free compared to mid 20th century transportation. Not to mention the towing capacity of these is more than the capacity of a 2 ton truck in those days and the torque is more than most semi's from that period. Also, these new trucks will go 3 to 4 times further on a gallon of fuel. Gasoline in 1956 was about 30 cents which translates to about $2.85 today......which is much cheaper today because $2.85 is a much smaller percentage of the household budget than $0.30 was in 1956. Lastly, most vehicles needed major mechanical by 20k miles and often times engine and trans rebuilds by 60k. Perspective.......on another note, I may be a hypocrite because my 2019 Ram was only $65k.....not $80k....but it is worth every penny. ;-)

Yep if they would offer the aisin in the 2500 I would have one in my driveway, but I'll be shopping for a 3500 just because of that. 68rfe has had too many problems and driving one feels so sluggish.

Kevin Barry The Aisen is better paired with the HO Cummins. It shifts better and can handle the extra torque. It’s made for work. Most people who tow heavy commercially stick with 1tons. It’s part of why the HO isn’t in the 2500.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the 68RFE. I’ve seen some broken within a 1,000 miles and I’ve seen some over 500k miles. It’s all in how they’re treated. People also don’t understand that a heavy duty transmission will feel sluggish driving around town. They’re meant to go-go-go, not sit through stop and go traffic. The 68 in my 2015 was amazing and I’d buy one again.

The tuning on the 68rfe is not great. It honestly feels like it's in the wrong gear just as much as the Tacoma I was driving before this. If you try and accelerate you'll fine you're often in the wrong gear and even with the tow mode on it'll up shift before it's ready, forcing another downshift almost immediately on the next application of any more throttle. I haven't driven one with the Aisin, but I've driven a lot of miles towing and unloaded with a Duramax and an Allison and I really prefer that combo compared to the Cummins and 68rfe in my 2019 Ram, which I have nearly 11,000 miles on so far, so this isn't based off of just a test drive. I'm tempted to go 6.4L Hemi and seem this one off, or if I wanted true heavy towing I'd jump to the 3500 and give the HO Cummins and Aisin a shot.

Before the 2500 and high output 3500 Cummins diesels were only different in tranny and tuning, now there are actual engine differences. No way I’d ever buy a 2500, if I’m looking for a 250-2500 I’m going ford or GM. If I’m going 3500 then it’s a open field between the 3

I love my 2018 2500 HD megacab cummins, the cab size is awesome. Between tool and parts hauling and passengers in the cab its wonderful. The towing has been great so far too. However the quality and support from ram and my dealer have been complete shit. Had a number of serious problems with it and where treated like crap and lied too. FCA's attitude of 7 more visits to fix some of this stuff is normal is also complete shit. AS well as the damage sustained to it and poor handling by techs, cause "who cares its a truck" is also shit in my book.

@AkioWasRight
@AkioWasRight 4 жыл бұрын
$42,000-$43,000 back then would about $60,000 today. You could easily but a Lariat 4x4 today for that kind of money, even before discounts. Also, most middle class Americans don't need trucks. They have 9-5 jobs and can easily survive with a Honda. Trucks are for people who work using their trucks, mainly business people who have decent income, not people who commute to work.

@@jamesbradford7817 No, it's not. Take a common car as an example. A 2003 Camry 4dr Sdn LE W/Auto was $19,875. With today's prices, that would be about $28,000 after inflation. A comparable Toyota Camry today is $24,095, about $4,000 less. The new car is cheaper when adjusted for inflation. In general, prices aren't going up, they have remained the same or have gotten cheaper over the last decade or two.
