Super excited about this. I have some fantastic vintage lapidary tools which I refurbished & they'll now outlive me, and being able to construct some of the finer control tools I'd use a fair bit will let me add more flexibility to my bench more quickly. Also, VERY happy you're well. I didn't see if you've posted any messages during this time you've been designing/iterating, so over the past couple of months I've definitely thought, "hmm, I hope Sweetgum is just busy, and not being held in a black site somewhere for that "let's print a war machine for freedom!" video!" 😂

New sub here. Just found the channel, like what you're doing here! I have a sort of hobby machine/prototype shop, some big toys and some small, I think you're on to something here as this machine does fill a lot of gaps. That's especially true for people just getting started who don't own a lathe or mill or whatever yet. I don't think dremel is a fair comparison for the same reasons you mentioned, and you're definitely going to learn some things building this that you just never would playing with a dremel.

There is an old machine called the Hommel UWG („Universelles Werkstatt Gerät“ // „Universal Workshop Tool“) It’s a universal machining tool which is very versatile and which could give you some inspiration for your machine. Really nice progress so far. Keep up the good work. :)

Interesting ideas. I think best motor for any needs - servo motor with AC driver. Chinese brands is under 100$ (200-400w) 3000 rpm and full torch on any speed.

@whatif8741Ай бұрын
for the clamps and base to mitigate drift from vibration and pressure you should put a 45 degree cleat on the base and clamp to where they interlock and it won't drift from the edge when using it.
@alxxander7506Ай бұрын
Just found your channel and this is an awesome project! I also found someone else making a small 3d printed lathe and other tools, and he filled his 3d prints with concrete or cement. You could maybe look into that, the significantly increased weight might increase the stability even more, or even remove the need for clamps.

Experiment: Make all machine parts of 3D printed metal, I'm curious how rigidity would affect precision/performance with this, and upgrading the motor how much that would expand it's capabilities. Hope you can do this one day, I'd love to see it.
@ZuNunchakuАй бұрын
i have suggestions for the motor that you might try : 1. brushless servo sewing machine. it has high torque, speed, well balanced, controller and power supply included, and cheap. and the controller itself is very good, it has break on stop, can reverse, and there is safety if overload. 2. brushless with am32 esc firmware installed. you can choose your needs for this option. motor and esc ampere. and it can go very slow, break on stop. i use it for my cnc. the benefits over option 1 is you can have a smaller motor than servo motor sewing machine. i really like brushless motor, because in theory it can last forever and the torque and speed are still constant across its life times.
@sweetgumnyc7794Ай бұрын
that would triple the price at least lol
@ZuNunchakuАй бұрын
@@sweetgumnyc7794 servo brushless sewing machine only $20-$25 so same price as your motor that you are using now

Nothing beats mass for vibration issues. He's borrowing the mass from the table with that clamp, but what he really needs is a big empty base on the machine filled with concrete, lead, steel, rocks, etc. He's in NYC, so maybe steel scrap is handy. In the Southwest there's a lot of free heavy rocks outside.

I've been brainstorming an auto diamond wire saw machine but I am very much lacking in that skillset. I bet you would be able to hammer something like that out awfully quick, think about it! I know many in the community would benefit. I am shocked there are not more viable options. It is just crazy to me we can have tile saws for $50 and the cousin (lapridory saw) is nowhere in the ballpark despite so similar. Same with the diamond saw, how is there just now a non-commercial vendor who makes it (although it sells for $3.5k). Thanks man, you rock!

Random idea that I've been curious about since I first saw the gumball, is using it as a possible makeshift milling machine or drill press. Probably not the best idea but just curious. Also what sort of power source does it use? I've been curious on what's powering the motor
