Coming up some call it the greatest power ballad ever recorded.. Faithfully by Journey. It was one of the best songs of one of the best years in music history.. 1983. It was so universal and impactful that when Prince was writing his own power ballad Purple Rain, he was concerned that he may have subconsciously borrowed from it so he called the band to see what they thought… and even though the legendary guitarist Neal Schon and Super human lead singer Steve Perry figure prominently on this one, the song was actually written by the keyboardist Jonathan Cain from something real he was dealing with. Up next the keyboardist and guitarist of the rock hall of fame band give us the real story of a classic next on professor of rock .

I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs. Today we have a very cool episode on what many consider to be the ballad of all power ballads..the #12 1983 hit by rock and roll hall of fame group the one and only Journey:
After world domination in 1981 and 1982 with their #1 album Escape, fans were looking for an encore. Journey had killed it with Escape with 3 top 10 hits including WHo’s Crying Now that went to #4, Dont’ Stop Believin’ that went to #9 and Open Arms that went #2. It was their most successful album until their Greatest Hits record in 88 but it was their peak studio album. They were so massive they even made a video game about the band and this was back when there were only a few video games on the market.
After a massive tour the band went back into the studio immediately and by february
of 1983 they had dropped their 8 studio album Frontiers… the album went all the way to #2 on the billboard album charts… remember this was one of the most competitive years ever with Michael Jackson Thriller dominating the top spot for most of the year…in fact Frontiers was at the runner up spot for 9 consecutive weeks just one behind Thriller. The album started off with the monstrous and anthemic Separate Ways Worlds Apart that peaked at #8. then Faithfully went to #12 and then Send her My Love and After the Fall both went to #23 respectively.
Four top 40 hits from one rock album which was virtually unheard of for most bands but not for Journey . It was also 6 times platinum with several classic rock staples beyond the singles including Chain Reaction and Edge of the blade…And the album might well have had even more hits! The album was finished and ready for pressing when, in a last-minute conference with Journey's A&R man Michael Dillbeck, two songs were ripped from the original lineup, which were "Ask the Lonely" and "Only the Young”. both of which would be hits. Only the Young of course went to the movie Vision Quest and would got to the top 10 and then Ask The Lonely was put on the soundtrack for Two of a Kind.

Steve Perry, my favorite singer, one of a kind and not able to be replicated. Steve puts the soul in everything he sings. As for Prince, he was so much more than Purple Rain, so multi talented, unreal guitar player and could play multiple instruments.

Seriously! There's a lot to love about The Professor, but the legacy he's creating of these back stories and history behind the music we love are his gift to music lovers for the ages. Especially these interviews with the actual creators of our favorite music! I grew up listening to Casey Kasem, and some friends and my brother made fun of me because they thought he was "lame". I loved Casey because he brought modern music history to life that I otherwise wouldn't have known. Also, like The Professor, Casey had an obvious true love of the music he talked about. We used to have game night at my brother's house, and a friend brought "Trivial Pursuit - Rock Edition". My brother was older, and had a rock band, and this was in the mid-1980s. He figured he would rule this game, but I won, easily. I'm not a musician, but I've loved music since before I could speak! Every event in my life has a song or two attached to it.

Yeah, total shame what's going on with Journey. All of the Escape members have been in a law suit against Schon. That tells us either Neal's the problem, or all the others are the problem. I only know that Neal has kept the band going, and I'm grateful.

Tenure studying Konokol Drumming in India that opened his "Cramped Feel" of being a hampster tied to a pole in a room of wheels. Neal could play a massive kit, flawlessly, but it was always a mind struggle for him as he always second guessed his skill level. So he met with Steve and learned the methods of Fluid Motion and Rhythm/Fills that the instrument is capable of producing when under less tension, managing space more efficiently when creating pieces for Big Songs. 6 months later, Rush was cutting 2112..perhaps their most legendary display of their devotion to musicianship perfection. Steve's ability to manage his own very successful Jazz/Fusion Band Vital Information and Cut Big Rock Ballads woth Journey in the same week is IMO what puts him in the ICON category. Plus. He lives less than hour from me in Ashland Oregon, and Big Dawg Deeno's an hour North in Corvalis. Imagine that, 3 Drummers Who Shared The Stage With Journey all retired to Oregon.

Prince was a class act and in return that was all he asked of his fellow musicians, which was please ask before you put one of my songs on your album. Alot of people got permission from the record company and not Prince, which caused a rift between him and other musicians. Hey Mustang! You're not alone on the misheard lyrics, but you're a stand up guy for admitting it! My ex insisted that in Ac/Dc's song, "Dirty Deeds", that the lyrics were "Neckties, contracts, I VOTED!" No matter how many times I explained that the lyrics were not "I voted" but "High Voltage", he told me I was wrong. They even had an album in the 70s called "High Voltage". I pointed out that in that part of the song, he's listing different methods for offing someone, so "I voted" would make no sense. I gave up when he insisted I'm wrong. When I was a kid, the Credence Clearwater song, "Bad Moon Rising" scared me some. I thought he was saying, "Don't go out tonight! It's bound to take your life, there's a baboon on the right!". I had seen a NatGeo documentary about apes, and it featured baboons with huge fangs, ripping some poor animal to shreds. When I heard that song, I was thinking, "Yeah, I'm hip John. I'm not going anywhere near a baboon!"

I've heard of this story before from other sources. Prince was so worried he called and asked if they minded, they basically said it's a hit, release the song. Which was just awesome of them considering how many plagiarism claims there have been over the years and how big both Journey and Prince were at the time. Some called Journey's ballads too sappy but Neil Schon's guitar work just cuts right through that bs and let's you rock along to a love song. That's called TALENT. I remember hearing Journey when I was a kid in the 80s, but recently, now almost 50, I've been going back and 'rediscovering" them, gorging on as much Journey as I can starting with their very first album before Steve joined. I absolutely love them, and I've been listening to a curated playlist repeatedly for weeks now. The only thing is... as far as I am concerned, the best Journey is Journey with Steve Perry. I can't bring myself to listen to any of the new stuff.

All the little things that have to happen to bring Journey together, or any band. What if John Bonham said noway to Jimmy? What if Steve Perry who actually quit music altogeher passed on a meeting with Herbie Herbert? It all came together with Johnathon Cain joining. Bars and night clubs was not big enough and they became Americas first arena band and all concerts were sell outs. 12 months on the road, 6 weeks recording, back on the road with another platinum album. Burnout was inevitable. They gave us music that stands the testt of time and each generation discovers what this music is. Back touring again with a fantastic voice of Arnel Pineda. Journey has new life again. Thanks Arnel.

What a band. Actually never really got into them until Faithfully came out. When I started to listen to them realized a lot of the songs I loved where from them. Really loved oh Sherri by Steve. Since that was my name. And was personal to what I was going through. They were so good together. I think the music they made TOGETHER was magic. I try not to look at the fighting now between them and really not interested in anything new they’ve done. It’s not the same. You can’t go back. Glory days right. Sometimes you gotta let the past be the past. I’m impressed that Steve keeps his opinions out of the public, that’s a true gentleman. I’ll just put on my old records and listen to them. Memories for sure.

I remember seeing Journey in the Salt Palace 1986, The Outfield was the opening band, and they were Phenomenal!! Journey came out and they were Phenomenal to the Extreme Maximum Overdrive, I mean I was in Rock N Roll Heaven, they were so great! When they left the stage, we cheered for more, and Journey obliged. On either their first or second encore they played Faithfully, and it was only at that point that I realized that they hadn't played it yet. Their concert was so phenomenal, the music so pure, so captivating, so enthralling, that I'd forgotten that the song Faithfully had not been played yet. I agree with the professor, Faithfully and Don't Stop Believing, they're my two favorite Journey songs. There's not a man on spaceship planet earth that loves his woman that doesn't wish he'd written Faithfully for his wife, or even a song only half a great. True! Three chords and the Truth! Bty, I'll be seeing Journey this July at the Stadium of Fire, my 3rd time to see this, the greatest band ever!

Journey’s hit Who’s crying now, to me was the quintessential 1980’s song. It was slow with lots of guitars and keyboards. It typified for me the sound all music needed to have. That mystery goes a long way. I saw journey play a few years ago with the new singer. He hit all the notes faithfully. I still miss the creator, singer Joe Perry.

The first day that Frontiers came out, I took the Antelope bus all the way across town to the awesome Tempo Records in Newhall CA to buy it on cassette. I wore it out playing it so much. I saw them on that tour, with Bryan Adams opening at The Fabulous Forum in L.A. . Those were the days.

I saw the Escape and Frontiers tour, both were massive but Frontiers just did it for me, it was very high energy, lots of pyro, very loud and I didn't see anyone sit down the whole show. The place was just going crazy. Bryan Adams did a super job opening for them, that's when he had Cuts like a Knife out and that was a huge record also that year and he got the crowd pumped up for sure, by the time he finished the crowd was going crazy and knowing that Journey was next they got even louder, then when the lights went out the place just exploded in screams and yells. That had to be one of the loudest shows I ever attended, my ears ringed for a while after that show and to this day I still talk about it. I'm so grateful that I got to see them when they were on fire all over the planet back then. I'm just disappointed the way things have turned out for the former members and current ones, so much drama going on.

This song was the very first song I "tried" recording to cassette, but did it with a microphone held up to the mono speaker of my Sanyo portable AM/FM radio with cassette recorder that I had just received for my 12th birthday (I only had an AM clock radio older than myself prior to that, listening to the world famous KFRC 610 and KNBR 680 in SF)). Found out after recording that I could "dub" right from the radio to the tape. This is super nostalgic for me as I remember the quality of my recording being gawd awful and I have a fully odd personal history with the band. 😳. In 1998, I was driving taxi here in Reno and had Ross Valery hop into the passenger seat next to me at the airport. Cut to 2010, I was working the truck dock as a stagehand and got to run the spotlight for Ross (and also the late Glenn Frey at the same show). Thank you for this one.💙

When we moved back to CA. from CO., not long after I entered HS, I was devastated. I LOVE the mountains. When we came across the bridge into Oakland, I literally became depressed, I thought it was so ugly, compared to the Rocky Mountains. After a year or two, I found my way all the way into SF. Not much changed w/my opinion- but SF was better than Oakland, imo. I'd always been a SF 49er & Giants fan, because we didn't have a baseball team in CO. way back when. And the Broncos? Well, we all loved Floyd Little, and we TRIED to get the Broncos going, but it took some time before the who "AFL" thing wore off, and people accepted them into the NFL. But back to SF. I discovered the joy of seafood in SF, a pretty damn good place to learn about it. And SF Clam Chowder, in a Sourdough bowl? Heaven. Needless to say, it began to grow on me back then. Especially Candlestick Park. So many memories. But listening to Neal Schon talk about the clubs there? It's kinda like my first trip to New Orleans, and finding every pub, every nook & cranny, filled with musicians & vocalists, to literally blow your mind, and keep you going for days after. I gush about Journey all the time here, but they're just that damn good, and their songs are completely stamped, with each of their DNA. I think that's what's really missing in music today. I mean, I'm sorry? But I really don't need to hear F-bombs, and every other cuss word known to those of us who've been in the military & out, in songs I'm trying to enjoy. Once in a Blue Moon? IF the situation is exactly right for it, it's KEPT a rare thing, and then ONLY done, when out live, in concert? I can deal with that I guess. I'd still rather not hear that.. I want to hear Journey, REO, Boston, and all the other wonderful bands I grew up with, have covered, etc., that NEVER did such a thing. What, musicians of today, you don't think THEY could have added a s**t load of their OWN? NOT a new idea. NOT "cutting edge". Lazy & Boorish, imo. ANYONE can do that. Done it myself, ONCE, then took it out, because it was moronic. Seriously, you have KIDS that want to come see your shows, listen to your records. Why are you violating kids, just so you can pretend to be a "Rebel"? Being a Rebel? Is going AGAINST the norm. Fighting for what you believe is RIGHT, and something you believe will IMPROVE life. How does swearing do that? It should be something extremely rare- but that's me. And sometimes? Being a Rebel is the WRONG thing to do. Being an American? Is realizing this is the case, LEARNING from, and CORRECTING your mistake, and doing it far better, next time around. NONE take accountability it seems anymore. These legendary bands? They did what they've done, not just for themselves, but for their fans, and many for the betterment, & what they believe in their hearts is the RIGHT THING, for all who listen to their creations. As I said, their DNA is all over every Journey song. The moment you hear it, you know who it is. And it is this, I believe, that makes them the musical legends, they've become. Sorry this is so long? But explanations, take words. Always have. IF you wish to provide the proper context, of what you're trying to get across to another. I'm mostly self-educated. I do the best I can.

I can personally state that this song will hit you in the feels. I saw them on this, the "Frontiers" tour and "Escape" tour the year before, in 1983 at the Brendan Byrne arena in East Rutherford, NJ. Bryan Adams opened for them. 18 or 19 thousand Journey fans singing along with the band. 40 years later still got a chill hearing the opening chords.
