The problem for Journey on the Escape album is it's loaded with songs that would have been chart-toppers if they weren't competing with the rest of the chart-toppers on that same album. Just an extraordinary album, top to bottom. The range on it is incredible. I read a snippet from Jonathan Cain once that essentially said that if a band is good, it can go anywhere, and the limiting factor is the singer. Perry could sing anything, so they went everywhere. Critics didn't get it. But the rest of us did.

As I was listening to this analysis just now I couldn't help but think if Stone In Love was hurt by being on Escape. If it had been saved for say "Raised On Radio", would it have been a bigger hit.

Cain said that?! He must have been stoned!!! Then, he tells this guy that Steve was a great singer, or something to that effect. So, which is it, Cain?! Not that I care, because I don't...you don't have a clue. BTW, I wonder how Journey's been lately? Haven't heard much of the band on the radio or anywhere else, since Perry left. Except, the old ones when he was with the group. Hmm...

So true, Perry could indeed sing anything, so they absolutely went everywhere. That insane touring schedule shredded his voice sadly. It really sucks that no one seemed to be looking out for him. Calluses on your fingers are certainly different than those on your vocal chords!

I completely agree with you regarding Steve Perry. He’s humble, he’s not showing off he’s simply giving the song the melodic power and soul it needs. It’s just fantastic! He uses his voice in service of the song. When he sang with Gregg Rollie it was obvious. He’s so phenomenal!! I ❤ the 1978 song Lights, just hauntingly beautiful.

Yet the other Steve , Steve Augeri doesn't get the credit for filling in for Perry after his Departure (see what I did right there?😃) Nor did Jeff Scott Soto who took over after SA had medical issues. I saw both, great range as well. Of course, Jeff sang for Yngwie Malmsteen many years before that. Arnel is okay, he is more of a Perry clone, even mimicking the "Perryisms" like flipping his hair. I just think if they wanted somebody with real talent they should of stuck with Soto.

This band literally did transcend human capability and consciousness on this album. All I can say is that as a kid they were my favorite band and this was my favorite song as much for the lyric as for the guitar work, or the dynamics of the drums, or the bassline, or the harmonies, the creativity... No gimmicks, no Freak Show, (although I love a good freak Show! LOL), these guys were from another planet! And Steve Perry?!! Get out of town! I've come to believe that Steve Perry, in his prime, was the best of the best. Mother father, is a masterpiece! It's a spiritual experience vocally and lyrically, and I honestly believe that that gut-wrenching guitar solo is the most emotionally expressive thing I've ever heard! Love the interview professor, keep up the great work! You are brilliant!

As I read all of the songs people think should be rated better, there is one that as I went down the list of songs that were mentioned, there is one that did not come up in over 50 reviews and it shocked me that "Lights" wasn't mentioned. One of Journey's early hits and in my opinion, where Steve Perry really shot to the top. I believe there are 3 singer's in rock and roll history with the best vocals ever, all singing hard and ballads. Paul Rodgers, Mickey Thomas, and my #1, Steve Perry.

The video of the band performing "Mother, Father" live is priceless. Journey's live performances are just as good, if not better, than the studio version! Steve Perry's performance of that song - LIVE - is phenomenal, amazing, spectacular... on and on!!! And Neal Schon's guitar solos are FIRE!!! Jonathan Cain once said in an interview that Steve recorded the studio version of that entire song in ONE TAKE! Here's the link to the live version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3rWcpeFjal6d7c

Steve’s singing alone in ”After the Fall” deserves a video. The live performances of “I’ll be Alright...” and “The Girl Can’t Help It” (both with Randy Jackson) represent the best live band performances you’ll ever see or hear. The music video of “When You Love a Woman” is live shock and awe-it should have won the Grammy. Steve’s solo of “Foolish Heart,” footsteps included, is beyond belief. And then there is “Traces,” two versions, to bring you to your knees. Mein Gott. 🎶🎶🎶

Quick note, Adam: Sammy Hagar was not *JUST* the former lead singer of Van Halen. He had a solo career, but was also in a super group with Neal Schon, called Hagar Schon Aaronson Shrieve, with bassist Kenny Aaronson, and former Santana drummer Michael Shrieve. (Neal and Michael played in Santana at the same time as each other.) Thought it worth noting. You being the Professor of Rock and all that.

Dude, I look forward to your every post. You are the modern day Casey Kasem. You are spot on! Stone in love as one of my favorite journey songs of all time. Love the insight about Neal talking about the classical part that he had that was added. Also agree 150% the Steve Perry is the best pop rock singer I’ve ever heard! As a trained singer and a tenor myself, I spent countless hours trying to sing in Steve Perry‘s range. If it’s a clear blue sky with all the stars are aligned, I can maybe hit all the notes on maybe one or two Journey songs. How he did that for 2 hours every night just blows my mind! As you stated, he combines soul, endless range and absolute power to round out his powerhouse vocals. Yes Freddie Mercury and Robert Plant are amazing but Steve Perry is the king and the undisputed Voice of classic rock. Neal Schon is one of the best and most versatile rock guitarists I’ve ever heard. He can play anything from New Age to rock to jazz to classical flawlessly and has done so on record.Jonathan Cain is a very pop smart songwriter. Put those three together and you have one of the greatest albums of all time. Escape. Journey is truly the sum of those three parts. Each individually is magnificent in their own right as a songwriter but collectively they form a powerhouse trio that’s one of the best in history.

"Stone in Love" is my all time favorite song by Journey. I can still remember back in '81 when this song came out. I was a Jr. in HS and bought one of the first Pioneer Boom Box's on the market. Was on the Girl's HS Tennis Team and took that Boom Box everywhere cranking up this song at practice and one the road when we stayed at cheap motels for weekend tournaments. I'd crank this song up in the am when we would be getting ready. I'll never forget my Coach yelling at me at 6am, "Turn that noise down!" I replied with, "Why?" He gave me a dirty look. Needless to say, he didn't care for my Boom Box or Journey. Years later at a HS Tennis Reunion, I still gave him crap about yelling at me and told him he doesn't know what great music is. The entire Escape Album is so damn good! FTR, I saw Journey three times. The final time was when Journey released their "Frontiers" Album. Bryan Adams opened for them. I had no clue who he was, but liked his energy and music. Funny thing was most people hadn't heard a lot of the songs off of Frontiers and were bummed when Journey kept playing them. When they finally started playing some of their earlier classic hits, the people went nuts! I still listen to these guys on vinyl on the my 70's Pioneer Vintage Turntable, Amp, Equalizer and HPM 100 Floor Speakers. My two son's, both 23, hate today's music and love Journey. I fell so thankful for growing up in the 70's and 80's when there were such great bands and so much insane talent.

Many of the great Motown signers of yesteryear Like Gene Chandler, aka The Duke of Earl were also better. I rate Perry with Denis DeYoung. Note, I was trained to sing by Mahalia Jackson. I wish I had been able to see Jay Black in the late 60's or 70's, he might have been the best. I agree with you. Steve Perry is a phenomenal singer. He's definitely my favorite of all time. His heart and emotion are like no other, not to mention his range. I've been hoping and waiting for so long for a chance to see him perform live. It probably won't happen, but a girl can dream ❤️

I am of the opinion that their song "Sweet and Simple" from their album Evolution is one of the best songs of all time. The piano, guitar, voice...everything about that song is just perfect.

You described Steve Perry and his vocal talent perfectly! He sings from his heart and soul and we all feel it and are a part of it. For me, he is the best singer of all time. I love his solo work as much his work with Journey. I love his song “You Better Wait”! The music video is awesome!!! He is just a great entertainer. Thanks for sharing

This has ALWAYS been to me the Journey song that was neglected it's true exposure! It is such a great song of emotional trauma and reaching out to get the attention of friends/family that I almost cry every time I hear it.I would of coarse listen to the whole album(Escape) but when it got to 'Mother -Father' I would turn it up even louder and replay it a few times while singing along. I have been a HUGE fan since my teens (I'm 54 and heard 'Lovin' touchin' squeezin' when I was in jr.high) and they are still in my top 5 bans of all time.

I agree - to call Stone in Love a hidden gem is absurd. I loved when the so-called “Professor” said to Neal “yeah, this song seems like a shoulda woulda coulda” - and Neal is looking at him like “wtf are you talking about, it was a huge hit.”

Kaleb B, understood. Not all markets are the same. I’ve lived in enough cities to recognize regional popularity. Currently I live in Cincinnati. Lots of southern fried classic rock played here. Not the same in Northern Wisconsin, where John Prine and Johnny Cash are staples on the radio. You get my point.

For me there are 2 drummers who are in a league of their own. The late Neil Peart of Rush, who simply plays the most complex stuff this world has ever heard and Steve Smith who is simply the most diverse drummer ever. There are many other amazing drummers, but it's game over, the rest start in the next tier below.

Fourth of July weekend, 1981.... Journey is on top of the world with their #1 album, and headlining the Rose Bowl. We camped 36 hours before the show, and patiently waited through Aldo Nova, Triumph, and Blue Oyster Cult (AND the baddest food fight I've ever witnessed), to finally see Journey, and oh was it worth it! The place erupted as soon as Stone In Love began, as the force of the general admission crowd moved me 30 yards toward the stage with BOTH feet off the ground! My face was pressed against the back of some dude for what seemed like an eternity, but when the dust settled we were right there near the front, with probably 70,000 others rocking full force. Strangely, Don't Stop Believin' was not the album's go to at that time as Stone In Love and Who's Cryin' Now got the most attention... and both still do with me to this day... Epic memories... Thx Professor for digging this gold nugget out!
