This Abandoned Funeral Home Has A Shady History

In today’s video, we head back south to explore an abandoned funeral home that mysteriously caught fire, with both soot and smoke damage causing the building to be condemned, and the doors to be permanently closed. The Norman Medford Peden Funeral Home was an admiral institution nestled in the growing populous of Marietta, Georgia. The old funeral home represented an important chapter within the local community's history and cultural landscape.
Opened back in 1969, the long-standing funeral establishment bore witness to innumerable life stories and cared for countless families during times of immense personal loss, however, after 55 years of service, a devastating fire in April of 2024 ripped through the funeral home, causing extensive damage and destruction throughout the structure. The fire, which seemed to have started near the large casket display room, had quickly spread from floor to ceiling, which soon became fully engulfed in sky high flames. In efforts to help control the burning building, the fire dept was forced to cut holes in the roof which in turn, only made matters worse as the weather and other elements soon trickled in. It soon became obvious that the once bustling funeral home was now a total loss and demolition would inevitably soon follow.
Despite its esteemed legacy, the funeral home eventually succumbed to various pressures that many similar establishments face today. Over the years, the funeral home had become the “go to” place for pre-need funeral services. A pre need funeral plan is a contract where someone prepays for funeral services in advance of the death, essentially taking the pressure off the family during such a difficult time.
These same pre-paid services that Norman Medford Peden Funeral Home was so well-known for, would eventually land them in even more trouble, after authorities were first tipped off last month to some rather unsettling discoveries made by another urban explorer. That urban explorer was documenting the abandoned funeral home when he came across a few disturbing sights. In a cupboard, he located a real human fetus in a jar and then multiple shelves full of cremated remains. The explorer would immediately run to the news outlets to show off everything that he had found. These discoveries led the authorities to pay a visit to the now infamous funeral home. They went on to confirm that indeed there was a real human fetus in addition to approximately 35 noses of unclaimed human cremains. Certainly an emotional experience, as authorities immediately began to try and locate the decedent’s families to reunite them with their loved ones. And it was during this investigation that authorities began to find some rather questionable business practices, mainly how thousands of dollars are now missing since the April 2024 fire. In addition to that, authorities also uncovered an unbelievable plot as if were ripped from a Hollywood movie. They found that the Norman Medford Peden Funeral Home had been in jeopardy of closing for the last few years and that just prior to the tragic fire, the funeral home had actually slipped into foreclosure status. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the funeral home and property were scheduled to be included in the upcoming Cobb County auction, only a few weeks after the catastrophic fire. In other words, there are whispers going around town that the funeral home went bankrupt and instead of liquidating their assets and selling the building at the auction, allegedly they intentionally torched their own funeral home to collect on insurance money which would have been much higher payout then selling at an auction. We can only guess as to what will happen to the charred funeral home once the full official investigation is complete. Time will certainly tell. Worked in a burnt down funeral home tearing out everything they was a corvette burnt to a crisp in the garage section along with a very big two motor boat! It was creepy I ain't gonna lie! Seeing the caskets nearly all burnt into. It was a job I'll never forget. Today it's land is used as a boat storage/rental or to own!

Yes, while this is 'sketchy' to say the least, something to remember though, someplace in nearly every funeral home in the country, you will find 'unclaimed cremains/ashes'. This is simply because there are times that the families, for whatever reason, have someone cremated, but then never come back for the ashes. So no, unclaimed cremains/ashes at ANY funeral home is unfortunate but not unusual.

This is a reason why having yearly inspection without notice would stop this sort thing happening including trust funds being checked yearly. This is why i wont do prepaid funeral might end up paid double because someone elses greed.

The prep room (aka "embalming room") is a mess. Given the state of the prep room whoever was in there should at minimum have worn a full face respirator and gloves. The commentary is equally painful in the prep room because its full of too many mistakes to correct.
