@@SnailHatanAI, or artificial intelligence, is any line of code or design where it can "think", or make decisions for itself based on a preset list of decisions and answers. AI isn't just what we've seen recently, with OpenAI and ChatGPT, but old AI, where they have databoxes of stored information that they can access to make decisions, like the AI in old CoD games, the enemies had to know where the obstacles and cover locations are, as well as the player, so they could make decisions of where to get in cover and where to shoot to hit the player. So, yes, there is AI in this game, because the alien can "think" for itself, without outside intrusion or additions.

My headcanon as to the lore explenation for the allien's behaviour is that it tracks you by smell. It can't pinpoint your exact location but it can follow your scent trail which ensures it's usually nearby. Sometimes it decides that you must have left the area so it goes to look elswhere, but once it realizes the scent trail is weaker it comes back to near you. Other times it tries to fake you out by pretending to go away, hoping to catch you crawling out of hiding when it doubles back.

I've actually seen a large number of players say that they surprisingly find Hard to be more challenging than Nightmare, because the Alien's aggressiveness on Nightmare is jacked up to such high levels that he's actually more predictable if you're able to keep a cool head and not panic (which definitely isn't me, lol) because he's almost always no more than a room or two away. On Hard difficulty, the Alien is still super aggressive, but he's _just_ perfectly tame enough still to keep a large element of unpredictability and uncertainty to his hunting.

Through months of perfecting every small detail of the game, memorization, timing, execution, and still being able to improvise in tight situations when everything inevitably goes wrong, the runs become a true ballet of beauty. You start making it to the late game more often, all the while the game not getting any easier, but rather you become better and better at narrowly avoiding death at every turn. Even then, no mission is ever guaranteed, which is actually wild. The late game deaths hurt more and more as you feel "so close, but yet so far away", and are set back hours and hours just to die earlier in the game a couple times, not making it back to your PB for possibly several more grueling runs. The game is unrelentingly difficult, even when you know it like the back of your hand. I love how you felt so at peace when you finally beat it! You earned it. Congratulations Sir Snam. Truly, congratulations.

There's actually a way to cheese out the "Complete the game without dying" achievement. No matter what kills you, there's always a death animation that plays before you actually die. PAUSE THE GAME WHILE THE ANIMATION IS PLAYING, THEN RELOAD YOUR CURRENT SAVE. IF YOU MISS THE CHANCE TO PAUSE AND GET KILLED, RELOAD THE PREVIOUS SAVE. The game will not register the death, since you technically weren't dead yet and since you reloaded back to before you died, it forgets the death. I figured this out by chance and easily got the trophy.

Btw, know how the Alien is always manage to find him and spawn at literally the perfect angle? Because it actually is fully calculated where he will be going next. The more noisemaker he use, the Alien will might just disregard and going directly for the direction he throwing from. It also does not follow pre-planned "patrol paths", instead evaluating data from its senses to determine where the player is or is not and moving via corridors or vents to where it has the best chance of finding prey. It will not only follow up on significant noises but also double-back and re-check areas it has just left if the information available to it indicates the player may have actually been hiding there. Who makes this AI is an absolute demon.

It took me maybe 6 years to beat this game on Nightmare, and I didn't even get the One Shot achievement. Most of that time was because, like you, I was getting HARD filtered by the xeno once it shows up in Chapter 5. I was too afraid, game was mad scary. A few years ago I decided to give it a REAL try and start over fresh. FWIW I never finished the game on any other difficulty, only Nightmare. I played a bit on easier difficulties but _really_ wanted to do a full playthrough on Nightmare. It was worth it. When I realized you can actually _walk,_ it completely changed the way I was able to play the game. The only time you _EVER_ have to crouch walk is if you are sneaking by a human, android, or the xeno is literally in the same room as you. As long as the xeno is in the vents, you are free to just get up and walk. If you run when it's in the vents, it WILL drop down and sprint full tilt towards where it heard the noise. You even have a lot of wiggle room to walk when it's not in the vents, and is actively wandering around. Pretty much the only time you have to play the game like Splinter Cell is when the xeno is literally breathing the same exact air as you are. From then on I managed to complete the game in a couple of weeks. BTW, the motion tracker DOES still work even on Nightmare. It just behaves like you're always in vents. It WILL show the xeno, it's just not as clear where it is exactly and it will throw a lot of echoes. On Nightmare you have to watch it for a bit longer than usual. TBH you even have to do this on easier difficulties, because you'll also get pings from things that AREN'T the xeno. I managed to unlock 42/50 of the achievements, and while I didn't get One Shot, I still got some rare ones most people don't have. I even did a run with that crazy mod that completely unshackles the xeno AI and makes it way more difficult. Honestly it's amazing and I highly recommend giving the game a try with that mod. I put in a couple others just to make it a _little_ less impossible, like slightly reduced fuel consumption. Just something so I don't burn through half a tank of gas from a handful of bursts. It's more like a a third a tank, lol.

Fun fact: You can earn this achievement by not dying - my method? If I know I'm about to die, I reload from the last save-point. The game doesn't register it as a fault to the achievement, so you can complete it without dying but by reloading. Edit: I should have just watched the video.

More or less, there are save points throughout the game. And if you miss one, you risk going back like 2 hours if you die. And there is no automatic save, only at these points (they are those phone booths)

You restarted THE WHOLE GAME after each attempt? Noooo don't do that! Learn the levels and start putting it together after you're relatively consistent with them. This way you're great at walking in your undies (not hard) and bad at the actually hard parts in the end (very hard!)
@SaturnineAberrance Жыл бұрын
As a former speed runner of this, this was a lot of fun to watch. :) All the missions that were the real sticking points were exactly the ones I expected, which is kinda oddly nice that it works out that way for "casual" play as much as it does for speed running. Missions 6, 10, 16, and 17 are the real ones, and a lot of your surprise deaths were because you touched the alien or its tail (like in the vent at 36:24); no touching! You could probably start doing actual speedrun attempts and do well pretty damn quick after this.

Utmost respect to you for this challenge, what I personally consider not even slightly worth it. Not when after every death, you are starting from the VERY beginning. And when this game is as long as it is, I couldn't even begin to list the thousands of reason as to why it's not worth it. But again, all the respect to you!
