Nathan, thanks for the shout out. You did a great job quarter sawing the log, your movements and rotations were spot on. With your skill and experience, you make it look easy. Quarter sawing used to be a time consuming, wood wasting pain in the rear, and with this Reverse Roll Quarter Sawing technique its predictable and fast. You are correct, I named it Reverse Roll Quarter Sawing because it goes against conventional quarter sawing techniques, rotating in the opposite direction, which is more natural, and sawing log halves instead of quarters. So its twice as fast and wastes half the wood. It also has the advantage of allowing "freestyle" adjustments of the toe boards to home in on the ray fleck while making the initial small wedge cuts, whereas in conventional quartersawing, the initial scouting boards are taken through through the middle of the quarter and so the highest probability of a "miss" is in the widest and most valuable boards in the log. So RRQS eliminates that. Very well done, and great job explaining things! I really enjoy watching your videos.

thanks Robert,
@johnnorris12273 жыл бұрын
Its got me thinking but im wondering when its all said and done if it is actually faster w/ less waste because you still have to go back and cut both the bark side and the angled side off whereas with conventional quartersawn you only have to cut the bark side off. It'd be interesting take a log and half it and do one half with that method and the other half the conventional method and do a back to back comparison.
@Hunter-yc4xi3 жыл бұрын
Question for either Nathan or Robert. What is the percentage of waste doing reverse roll verses standard quarter sawing?
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama3 жыл бұрын
@@Hunter-yc4xi A professional quartersawing mill adopted the technique a few years ago after a demonstration I gave at a sawmiiling convention. They have a standard 30% loss using traditional quartersawing techniques, and now see only an 18% loss, an improvement of 12%. Also, they see an almost 100% fleck hit rate, and about 10% increase in log processing speed. My RRQS technique is a significant improvement over conventional techniques.
