As a Muslim from north africa, or rather Algeria, i'm quite surprised by this video, bc i find westerns often look for wisedom in greek or asian cultures. But as someone who's dad bought him the book "Al Muqadimah" on the day he was born and read it as a kid. i'd like to shed some light about what he was really looking at when he talked about Assabya The view that an empire or civilization raises and falls in one single entity is not really as accurate as it sounds like the reason Ibn Khaldoun wrote that was his observation of the rise and fall of smaller kingdoms and dynasties inside the muslim world, like a single civilization will have many cycles of raise and fall and not one single one, like how it was thought by westerners who are fascinated by "why did Rome fall?". I made this quote on the spote, this is my own saying "Rome didn't fall in a single night." no pun intended. But this is exactly what i think how Ibn Khaldoun thought about the many raises and falls of Muslim dynasties in the Middle East and North Africa. And he righfully thought that people from the outskirts, not always nomads, but they could be villagers or farmers often rise because they have a strong kinship and believe in a single destiny. In the past, it was nomads really bc of the reasons you pointed out, but also recently in the past century the raise of socialism and communists and revolts by farmers and working classes bc nomads aren't as relevant

We aren’t a nation, we’re an economic zone. And nobody wants to fight and die for an economic zone. Our military is at best an overpriced mercenary force and at worst a welfare program/money laundering operation masquerading as a fighting force. Our military technology is serviceable, but not invincible or superior to Russian or Chinese systems, and in many cases, decisively inferior. Our military has succumbed to rot, its most capable members purged in favor of political loyalists, and our doctrines are outdated. If we want to retool ourselves for a 21’st century conflict, it would take an economic cost we aren’t prepared to pay and reforms we aren’t equipped to undergo.

The Russians can’t beat a ragtag army of untrained 45 year olds and lost their entire surface fleet 2 months into a conflict with a minor regional power. Asa-biyyah is interesting and it can be translated as tribalism. The thing about it is it has a way of preventing the tribes from progressing because they tend cling to old traditions even if they are destructive. It wasnt asa-biyyah that made the islamic empires so vast and powerful but rather a sense of religious brotherhood that goes beyond the familial. To a country with weak familial ties asa-biyyah is truly salavating but what is beyond that is what creates empires.
@D__Ujjwal28 күн бұрын
People living in harsh climate are stronger physically and somewhat mentally, it true also because. Good times create weak men and hard times creates strong men. Indeed tribalism is very destructive in this globalised world with population of 8 billion. Top comments are very funny, blaming women, Jews and what not. Their emotion has taken over their minds. It's true that religious figures do better for uniting people, like shivaji from india, he was seen as incarnation because he United Hindus against foreign islamic invaders and ended 800 year rule of islamic empires and converted small empire as Belgium into whole Indian subcontinent (equal to size of Europe)

Great video as always man! I have felt this so deeply my whole life but it's so hard to communicate with others. I will tell people that I lack a sense of belonging and community and people will tell me that I have friends so why should I care. But it goes so much deeper than that. I have a decent amount of friends but they're literally scattered around the world. I grew up moving from country to country so I never felt like I belonged anywhere and even when I came back to my homeland I had no real roots or connection to people there. I am tired of being told that working a job I hate and having all my friends in different cities is satisfactory and while I m not saying I have the worst life possible, I have gone through way worse times and felt better because I had community to support me at the time. Life is materially easier for me but mentally much harder because i go to work every day having no idea why I am there and when I finish I have nobody to go see or spend time with. Remember that you guys are not alone and we are not insane for noticing how superficial most human connections are these days. Having a brotherhood is what I desire more than anything else and I hope I can find it one day

Most people gloss over the longer comments. I myself appreciate them because the person conveys a deeper thought process than the popular one liners . Our problem today is that we have no time . Most of us have to spend 60 hours a week at work just to meet our basic needs . Our marriages and families fail because our spouses have to work . The lack of time spent with our wives and children weakens any chance of cohesion . The same can be said for friendships. I have a daughter who moved to Spain for a few years after college so that she could travel Europe working teaching English. She said it was so different. They do not work as much, usually 32 hours a week, and have a mandatory one month vacation . In America, we have been groomed into a culture of consumerism. We all try to fit in by having the latest shit . I think you are on the right track with a brotherhood, but it requires sacrifice and goes against the norms of our society. Maybe less is more, and keeping up with the Jones' is the biggest lie we have been fed by our corporate leaders .

Democratizing the workplace can give you a voice to at least decide the length of the work week. For that however you might need a revolution in order to abolish the private ownership of the means of production (your workplace) and turn it into common ownership of the means of production. This can create a sense of community and belonging where you live when the workplace hierarchy has been abolished. You'd also need to to abolish the market economy and instead plan the economy locally. Supercomputers are powerful enough to do that. Capitalism is the main reason for all the problems we have. It no longer works and we have to replace it with the System I mentioned at the beginning, democratic socialism (it's the better option).

Nobody is responsible for us, and we are responsible for nobody. In the end, this idea leaves us feeling alone and disconnected. Our empire was well aware of the power of individualism when america was built. The idea of disconnecting ppl was used to devide the multitudes of tribes that existed when the crown aimed to conquer the new world. Tribes were isolated from eachother which left them feeling alone and left them easy targets to conquer. This is how we have all been coquered by our own government. We are left feeling defeated with the idea that one person has no power to do anything, other than to get up and go to work and make money. It's purpose as a nation, and what made it unique, died when the civil war ended. (State rights) The already-spiritually-dead nation officially died in 1913 when the federal reserve (Global banker mafia) replaced the constitution and Supreme court as the highest ruler of the land. (As the Confederates predicted) And immediately started 2 world wars. (As the Confederates predicted) Albert Pike could of told you about all 3 of the world wars in 1860. American ancestors called him racist (Sound familiar) and swarmed him and his men with foreign mercenaries AKA "The Union". This "country" hasn't officially existed in over a century. 111 years. It's a global headquarters not a "country".

This is why the Indonesian forefathers always emphasize "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" (Unity in Diversity". Indonesia should've been Balkanized decades ago. Our nation is too big, the people too different with one another. However we persevered and united under one language, one nation. This is why we reject vernacular schools and always talk about national culture, national unity, national identity. It doesn't need to see far to see how weak "Asabbiyah" wreak havoc than to just see Malaysia. Vernacular schools and the division amongst Malay, Chinese and Indian is so palpable. The cracks is showing. Unity is really needed. That's why a common enemy and a common goal is needed.
@keongmania6918 күн бұрын
Because despite of being multicultural, Indonesia do have strong sense of unity and shared identity. Unlike in the West or other regions whenever the population demand independence everytime the government disappoint them, this is not happened in Indonesia. The same reason why our founding fathers rejected federalism. The population were always know and aware (despite of being indoctrinated from young age), if they were about to be separated again, foreigners were always ready to influence and take advantage from it. They learn from history.

No it's not. What it is in the norm which doesn't mean it's good. young men fighting and dying for " God & Country" results in country profiting while god is spoken at funerals and then not again until another war. You have to give reason for young men to fight and die, even if it's not true.

Any neighborhood that resembles a European close-knit community where people live, play, and work in a tight-knit area is completely unaffordable for the average American citizen. The best way for America to have Asabiyyah ideals is to do away with long spread house farms in the suburbs, and come back to a time of mixed use neighborhoods. You know, like when you cared about shopping at the market you could walk to because the owners or workers were your immediate neighbors.

I don't see how America would fall. It seems to bounce back from every problem, even massive problems. It updates and reprograms, then it carries on. It would require something extremely powerful, huge and long-term for America to collapse, but even then it would bouce back as long as people don't forget it.

@@0xm3trix well I've read the Quran and Hadiths it's far from that (respefully) it allows child marriage in Surah At-Talaq (65:4) it says women testimony is half of a man because they are deficient in the mind according to Sahih al-Bukhari (Volume 3, Book 48, Hadith 826) Islam also permits polygamy (even if the wife doesn't consent) and slavery (I know it's a different kind of slavery but forcing someone to be your slave is honestly sad and cruel) it also allows intercourse with captives even if married in Surah Al-Mu’minun (23:5-6) Muhammad approved of it in Sahih Muslim (Hadith 3432) Muhammad also married a 9 year old you probably know that and other bad thing's he did like telling Aisha to throw dust at women grieving the deaths of their husbands in Sahih Muslim, Book 11, Hadith 30 Also the Quran gets Alot of sceinfic things wrong or has scientific knowledge that were known in that era by greeks recycled the signs of judgment are vauge it gets the Trinity wrong it says Jews say Ezra is the son of God which is false (I'm neither Christan or Jew I'm an agnostic theist) yea I don't really think it's standing against Alot of bad thing's in it

Manifest destiny, as a concept, is not something to aspire to. Once you justify your senseless violence what’s stopping the next person from unaliving your entire settlement from the map? Perpetuating violence is never the answer. Smh just sickening.
@zlovmumixam827326 күн бұрын
How ironic. Considering 'Manifest Destiny" was the conquest of primitive grapists, being replaced with peaceful high-morality society. Hence why the natives conquered by white people get casinos and private property. While the the natives conquered by other natives get egg-sex-cuted, graped, and enslaved into non-existence. Don't forget to take your TED talk to the Apache tribe and remind them that scalping people isn't justifiable...

Russia provides a strong example of this. The people of Moscow have collectively left their homes and evaded enemies multiple times throughout history. For instance, when Napoleon took Moscow, its residents willingly left with the army to perform a tactical retreat and deny Napoleon resources.
