Incredible that we are developing genetic markers to tell if something is captive bred or wild caught, very useful tool to help prevent poaching.
@muddyfeetaussies3 жыл бұрын
It's a simple parentage verification dna test. many dog and cat registries already do that. Simple paternity testing. have the parents on file.. then do dna confirmation the parents.. it requires the captive breeders or thoes who say they are have the parent stock to profile..

Fun fact: Smaug from Tolkien's "The Hobbit" was named after the scientific name for this one as he lived some time in the part of the free state where they come from in South Africa.
@bellezavudd2 жыл бұрын
Nope ! Actual fact is obviously better than a fun one. The ACTUAL FACT in this case would be that the scientific naming of the south african lizard was in 2011. Yep 2011. Long, long, loooong after not only the writing of The Hobbit but also the death of its author.

I got a video topic recommendation for you. A Finnish company called Polar Night Energy has started testing an energy storage method where electricity/energy is stored as heat in sand. That heat could then be distributed as district heat to the local area during winters. I think it's a really interesting concept.

I keep exotic pets and if it wasn't for our hobby, there would be far fewer endangered species in existence. Take the Poecilotheria Metallica for example, nearly wiped out due to habitat destruction but kept by private collectors in their millions.
@Tinky1rs3 жыл бұрын
True, but that shouldn't impede regulations on wildlife trade and proving that a specimen is indeed captive-bred.

@@megamanx466 name an animal that can't be captive bred, remembering that we can breed everything from tigers to pandas and everything in between. Only things we can't are whales and certain sharks. CITES do a great job and have even blocked me from certain arachnids recently.
