The jazz finale of ATS 2019 was fabulous! David and Sandra’s choreo for the group numbers was impressive. And I have to say, the star quality of Yuna was above anything else. I almost forgot that since she stopped skating for so long, but the fact that when so many of my favorites, Javier, Shoma, Sui/Han, etc. skated in the same rink, it’s still hard for me to look away from Yuna says everything. Truly THE QUEEN. Plus, the lighting and visuals of ATS were such a high level, way better than other ice shows.

Just defending Machiko Yamada a bit. She has always considered herself an “outreach” type coach spreading FS to wider public rather than top talent development coach. Her motto is to have her students enjoy skating. She is famous for encouraging parents to get involved because she prefers ‘family’ atmospheres. She only made up her mind to be an international level coach when Midori chose to stay with her despite the federation’s recommendation to a coach in US. She encouraged Mao to go overseas when she surpassed the training level Machiko was able to provide at her public rink. There was no government funded Chukyo University rink in Nagoya yet. I think Machiko is well aware of her limitation and I wouldn’t be surprised if she even encouraged Shoma to leave.

I agree with you. And I personally believe that her idea about skating is what makes everything around her and Mihoko so very interesting, touching, and different. This is probably what hurts Shoma´s fans the most right now, and believe me, I do not mean that we feel bad because he left... I mean we will miss that... that air of family around them. That trio will always be one of the most beautiful things we have seen in the world of sport. They brought that atmosphere that you talk about into it everytime. I too think that she is the sort of trainer that will help her trainees to fly on their own, and that matters so, so much. Now I am just waiting for Shoma to develop the skills that he still needs. And it was a brave decision to make. I will always thank Machiko, Mihoko and Shoma for the beautiful presence they brought us for so many years. She is the kind of trainer I would have liked to have.

(My daughter attended their Ice + Dance Seminar in London during the last week of May). I was lucky enough to meet Gabriella and Guillaume (and Lewis Gibson too). Let me tell you, Gabriella is as beautiful, graceful, elegant and powerful as she looks. And at the same time, she's funny, frivolous and down to earth. On ice, she has an air of grace and no matter who else shares that ice, your eye is always drawn to her. Off ice (and in the car park), she's witty and charming, and it was so nice that she was the person instigating the conversation! Her sense of style and elegance is almost Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn-esque in that her hair, make-up, nails, styling is understated but at the same time, elegance personified. My daughter (who turned 14 yesterday) and she has a new feminine icon. Gaby taught my daughter a couple of "signature moves" (one-on-one) that my daughter is putting into her programme. The influence of such a wonderful human being cannot be understated. Guillaume is just the most beautiful man god ever created. I don't think Yuna and Hanyu will ever do a show together. It would be like two supernovas at the same place and a nightmare to get tickets. For years Mao and Hanyu have not been in the same show, I guess because its counterproductive for organizers to have your two biggest stars for the same price when you can rake in with 2 separate shows. Once Hanyu reached his fame he took over FaOI from Shizuka as the main star till it became "Hanyu and friends" but it's not clear how much influence he has on the production of it. He will probably make his self produced show when he retires. Also, some korean Yuna fans strangely are bitter about Hanyu getting his 2nd OGM while Yuna was negated hers and there's all that japan/korea rivalry. This didn't stop Shoma from getting invited to ATS at all, but Hanyu and Yuna are both national icons so this could be an issue. Hanyu fans might not like him having to share the spotlight, same for Yuna fans. Maybe they're better off doing their own thing. I think the only way would be if Javier invites both to his show, then it could work and it would be great. Still a ticket nightmare though.
@squirrel73035 жыл бұрын
@@shk9035 Yes, It would be too much chaos. I don't know the details about that 4CC issue. Was this the national anthem problem that led korean fans to use gifs of him playing with other skaters to 'prove' that he was harassing them and had a terrible personality? Yuna going to Japan wouldn't work, neither would Hanyu going to Korea. It could maybe work only if both were guests in another country and that's a big if. Hanyu mentioned Yuna only once at an interview when he was in juniors because he liked how her jumps were seamless with the choreography and part of a big picture and funny enough that's a feature he's also been known for. Then he never mentioned her again, probably because of the Mao x Yuna rivalry. Even Wakaba Higuchi got heat for saying that Yuna was her idol, even more when she did her James Bond free program.

I thought about this as well. While it would be the Crowning Moment of every Yuzu/Yuna fans' dream come true, there are a lot of factors that have to be taken into account with these shows. Because Yuzuru is still competing, he can't go to Javi's ice show (though I have a feeling he would definitely do it when he's retired and has more time). All That Skate is held at the same time as Fantasy on Ice in Japan, so there's scheduling conflicts. I imagine these two biggest stars of figure skating would definitely make the sport even more popular and well-known to the world if they ever did participate in the same ice-show.

Remember that time TheSkatingLesson hypothesized that ATS and Eunsoo faked her incident with Mariah Bell in order to sell tickets to that struggling ATS ice show? You know the one that was completely sold out and managed to book a foreign cast of 2019 Euro, 4CC, and World GOLD medalists ONLY (one of them being Raf's student Nathan Chen, in fact) and national icon Yuna herself? And then remember how they gassed themselves up over it like it was the greatest conspiracy theory human minds have ever concocted? yeah, I remember acutely. : )
@rop8885 жыл бұрын
Well, that conspiracy theory was kind of silly. It's more likely it was done to boost Eunsoo herself and Yuna shouldn't have been dragged into. I don't remember seeing anything coming from that horrible bullying she endured though? No other information? The proof that was supposed to be coming? I remeber acutely as well. And funny how Marin Honda and other young skaters all get along really with everyone at Team Raf. Just one exception. Wonder what's up with that?
@coconutgelato74595 жыл бұрын
paradoxical Everyone is great to Marin because she’s very well connected and a potential in for getting invited to ice shows and events. And according to other Japanese skaters and coaches, she doesn’t work as hard as she should. Whereas Eunsoo has been reported to be very focused in practice, the same isn’t said of Marin, honestly. Marin socializes a lot more with others at the rink than Eunsoo for this reason. I’m not trying to be shady, but several Japanese skating people have said this. American skating stans are quick to accuse Eunsoo of being jealous/bitchy/conniving, but her interactions with the other South Korean girls are nothing if not supportive. They’re all the same age fighting to represent their small federation, but they’re all very good friends and very supportive of one another. I don’t think that fits this Team Raf narrative that Eunsoo is bitch. She just spends her actual rink time in LA working?? Like she should be?? It’s obvious that ATS released a public press release because KSU wasn’t going to make a claim with the ISU. ATS tried to force KSU’s hand into making a complaint. After worlds, Eunsoo released her own personal statement that she didn’t want to anyone to blame anyone else and that she wanted to put it behind her. At that point ATS finally listened to their client. If Eunsoo hadn’t specifically said that she wanted to leave the incident behind her, ATS might have said more, but they had to do what their client wanted.
@coconutgelato74595 жыл бұрын
paradoxical inversely, Yuzu at tcc keeps to himself and spends his time at the rink exclusively focused on training. I don’t see anyone coming after him for being an asshole because he doesn’t spend his time there socializing? The whole Eunsoo is bitchy thing is sooo gendered and messed up, not to mention the fact that she moved to a brand new country to train at 15 years old, so it’s highly probable that she might be shy and standoffish because of that as well. 🤷♂️
@rop8885 жыл бұрын
@@coconutgelato7459 Interesting you are whinging about bullying of Eunsoo while spreading negative rumors about Marin Honda. There are tons of skaters, some you've never heard of, with Raf. And they all get along and hang out. There has never been an issue except for this one skater and the issue was quickly dropped once people came out and said they were no separate locker rooms and everyone worked fine together. If the "attack" was as exaggerated as the "bullying" then I'm pretty sure it was made up for publicity reasons. I don't think Eunsoo is a bitch or the issue. But her agency sure did look for an opening to try to advance her career.

His ex- coaches may have pushed his back, but it doesn't mean that they don't mind him leaving for their rival coach, who is also femail and similar age as Ms. Higuchi. I imagine that Ms. Higuchi would be very annoyed and shocked if she saw Shoma and Ms. Hamada's hug.
@cheryldee92405 жыл бұрын
@@ささパンダ-b4j Honestly, I can't see anyone getting upset with Shoma. Do you think Ms. Higuchi would be happier to see the Russians get all the credit for the hard work she and Ms. Yamada have done with him since he was 5 years old? Because you know that is exactly what the Russians would do should he improve -- claim it was their superior technique, and then comment about how bad his technique was when he came to them. C'mon, you know! This is why they are so upset with Medvedeva for going outside of Russia...because no one's technique is more superior than theirs! Have you seen this pic? instagram.com/p/BwhOLEqnJfe/ I think it might be kind of cool to see these two training at the same rink.

Big time shout out to Eunsoo Lim’s team. Last year they sent a 15 year old out on the ice to tell the story of Chicago. This season they have her skating to Make Me Feel in the gala where she sells the story of sexual benders. If the local high school drama club or dance team tried this it would be a point of contention at the next PTA meeting.

@@henni1475 I guess you are not figure skating professionals. There are two skating skill legends I know, one is Patrick Chan and the other is Takahiko Kozuka, who both rated Shoma's skating highly. And Daisuke Takahashi and Tatuki Machida also admire Shoma's skating. Kozuka and Takahashi rated Shoma's skating higher than Yuzu. I watched the video of Yuzu's practicing video you sent me, which didn't impress me much. For example, looking at Yuzu's Eagle there, he was chiseling the ice litteraly and looked slow and didn't look smooth at all. Compare to Shoma’s great eagle in his last season 'Moon light`, the difference is clear. Shoma's eagle is much smoother and faster without any effort. It was breathtaking and magnificent. I also remember Yuzu's shaky twizzle in the SP in the WC 2019. Yuzu seemed to struggle with egde controle, on the other hand, Shoma's twizzle is always stable and smooth. I believe that superiority of Shoma's skating skill is common understanding among professionals (many skaters, coaches all over the world). On the other hand, I never heard any skating specialist like Patrick Chan and Kozuka especially prased Yuzu' s skating skills. If you have any infomation, please let me know. Even Yuzu won Japanese Championship in 2013 first time, his skating skill wasn't regarded top 3 at the time. Yuzu's skating is great, but I recon that Yuzu's strenght and charm of his skating skill is rather in his very complicated and difficult steps, than smoothness and beauty of stroks.

But why not that letter? Why not this time? What constitutes a "proper time" to call out hate? I think what made this particular instance different from the usual, run of the mill hate that Evgenia, or any other skater for that matter, unfortunately receives, is that there was no way for Evgenia to avoid reading the letter. It was in the box that's supposed to be for fan gifts. Sure, there's plenty other more despicable messages sent her way through social media - many in the comments of your videos, in fact. But those messages, one assumes to see in this day and age of social media, or avoid seeing by not reading them. In a perfect world, there wouldn't be any hate messages. But they exist - there are plenty of people with no better things to do, apparently. Hate is a hater's own misfortune. Now if any other skater who witnessed Evgenia actually reading the letter wants to call out that whomsoever wrote the letter, then I do not really see anything wrong with it. As you mentioned, Johnny was also a recipient of this kind of rude behavior of certain skating "fans" - maybe he identified with the situation, maybe he was just protecting Evgenia (they seem to be very friendly), or maybe a part of Johnny thought doing so could put him a good light - people could have many motivations. However, should that really overshadow the bigger picture?

I watched both FaOI and ATS full shows. FaOI has mega star power line-up with Hanyu, Fernandez, V/M, Plush, Buttle, Weir, Lambiel, Kihira, Zagitova, Med, Tukt, Arakawa and all the other very good Japanese skaters like Oda, Kaori, Satoko, Miki, Mai and Akiko. ATS is not every comparable, there is Yuna, ok, but there are only six international skaters (no ladies at all) and a few Korean ladies. The programs at FaOI were much better, also the Flamenco on Ice at the two stops was very good. The violinist (who played Zagi's Carmen) was very good, also Toshi himself is a big star. FaOI this years was the best I've probably seen before. Don't expect too much from the intro and finale though, it has always been like that. ATS was cheesier and aims for a younger audience than FaOI, in the finale I thought they tried to sex up Yuna way too much, it was cringy. It's just not her personality. The programs at ATS were worse than at FaOI, even Yuna's programs were so-so (I'm saying this as a big fan of her).
@henni14755 жыл бұрын
If I look at the raw skating quality of both shows, I agree that FaOI was stronger imo. Especially the retired skaters like Shizuka, Miki, Stephane, Jeff, Anna and Luca, Tessa and Scott and Javi's Flamenco on Ice special were a pleasure to watch. Brilliant quality. Yuzu's Masquerade is a highlight, too (independent from personal bias). You can like or dislike the group numbers (for me the choreos are a bit goofy and the costumes... well :D) but they have long tradition and it's fun, so I won't complain. At ATS my favorite programs were Run from Sui/Han and Oblivion from Gabbi/Cizo. Love both programs with all my heart. The rest was decent, but couldn't create that magical atmosphere for me. I was especially disappointed with Javi's programs. Considering his standards he made many mistakes and it felt a bit halfhearted. I think FaOI is something like a chilled family gathering with the inofficial name "Yuzu and Friends" :D ATS is a big skating spectacle with the defending world champions (minus Alina). However, it's great that we have both shows and I hope that they will continue over the next years.

Many of the FaOI skaters are not very interesting to me, they are older and some haven’t competed in years. 3/4 of the Worlds gold medalists were at ATS, the cast was great overall. More skaters in a show doesn’t equate to a better cast.
@henni14755 жыл бұрын
That's why It's great that we have both shows. They deliver performances for different tastes. I personally prefer mature adult skating over youngsters and FaOI was more satisfying for me in that department. I realized that when I watched Rika and Shizuka right after another. Rika has a lot of potential, but she can't create such a breathtaking atmosphere like Shinzuka yet. Same goes for Alina. Yes, the FaOI cast is big, but every single member delivered really well - especially the older skaters - it was not only quantity but huge quality as well.

Glad to see another episode from you guys. While the sparkling pants of Yuna Kim's EX "Issues" was eye-catching, I can't say that I was taken with the performance. The hand choreo? Wasn't quite sure what she was going for there, or if she was trying to make a statement through this song. "Issues" is one of my all-time favorites. In my opinion, Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres could do this song justice. I can see it would support them better, and they in turn would likely enhance it through their skating. Shoma training with Eteri for the summer was shocking. Surely, he's not there to re-learn his jumps (and with a bunch of teenage girls about to go through puberty!). Consistency is important, but I wonder if Shoma did his research on Tutberidze's group. Sui and Han working with Ekaterina Gordeeva? OMFG!! They're only going to get better, and not because they went to a Russian pairs lady who won the Olympics twice, but because they're branching out and getting more training and experience from others, and not just staying in China and getting choreo from Lori (who does excellent work, I hope she still works with Sui/Han this upcoming season). Morgan and Vanessa with Battle of the Blades? I can't wait to see how that goes. I don't ever want these two to retire before they win an Olympic medal or a World gold. Yuzuru Hanyu getting back his quad Lutz is a good thing. However, if he doesn't rest his body, he won't be able to peak for the Grand Prix Final and Worlds. I want to see him do the quad Axel! Interesting that he has not stated what his SP and FP will be for the upcoming season. Guess we'll just have to wait and see. Funny that you mention beauty pageants. I barely watch Miss America, but will occasionally watch Miss Universe with mom, grandma and auntie every year. Figure skating (especially ladies' singles) must be akin to the politicking at beauty pageants.

Fantasy definitely has the greater collective star power. Hanyu, Plushenko, Javi, Buttle, Lambiel, Weir, Voir, Tatiana and Max, the ZagMed, et al. Much more exciting imo. Probably pays more too. Lmao! Jump technique doesn’t matter anymore. The ISU has said as much with their whackjob rule changes. Shoma will benefit based on his crap jump technique. Vincent, as well. He will be over Shoma next season and I predict he will he potentially beating Nathan by 2022; they almost had him winning over him near the end of last season. USFSA will stop at nothing to get to to top, uet RusFed are the corrupt ones. Will Etery have time for Shoma? With factory operations at full production? Also, will she break him like she did poor Adian?

Yuna's programs and bits were so incredibly dull and boring. Like I know she just turned up to collect an easy paycheck, but did she have to make it this obvious? Yes, the way she can move looks beautiful, but she clearly put no effort or thought into any of it, like she couldn't be bothered. She also didn't look like she was enjoying any of it.
@janehernandez92375 жыл бұрын
She did looked like she enjoyed the show, u are just jealous that people still love her and will continue to go to the show. She did not have to come back and skate but she did it so other skaters can become popular. No skater in south korea is popular as her. She wants figure skating to still be popular. She basically came out of retirement when she did not have to. Its people like u who only see bad things about Yuna when Yuna only tires to help others.

@@janehernandez9237 Lol, why would I be jealous that people still love her, when she's one of the few female skaters who's skating I enjoy??? Get real! I was disappointed in how little she offered, precisely because I enjoy her style! (and no, she looked miserable the whole time during practice and the show itself)
@brianr.30855 жыл бұрын
Unless you have privileged access to Yuna's private thoughts and motivations, I'm wondering how it can be so "clear" to you she showed up just for the paycheck when she could've made that same amount several times over by doing a commercial without the extra effort of skating and rehearsals. Maybe she decided to appear because she actually missed skating, just as the people who know her personally have already said.

here is the thing i have noticed about yuna's show. in 10 years of show existence she was never inviting russian or japanese skaters. she had all kinds of american, canadian and european skaters at the show, but never russian and japanese. "the queen" should have a really sad feelings about russia and japan. shoma is the first japanese skater that had ever appeared at her show. the only russian skater that was invited at her show earlier was elena radionova. i guess the reason why radionova was invited, it's because she'd mentioned in her interviews that yuna is one of her favorite skaters. which, let's be honest, is a big deal. "the queen" is the skater for the plebs, it's impossible to hear from any non korean skater that yuna had some influence on her skating. so radionova was invited becasue she'd kissed "the queen" arse. what was the reason for shoma's invitation? did he also gave a praise to a yuna's sparkly pants in some interview?

@mish098aimer so there was 4 russian skaters, and 3 japanese, throughout all those years. good to know. probably yuna had more canadians in one cast in half of her shows. but that's no wonder that she'd invited yagudin more than once. yagudin is very good at kissing asses. i can easily imagine him kissing a korean queen arse for a small fee

yuna's show was so pathetic and embarrassing on so many levels. starting from the poster, which was arranged like "the queen and her servants". then the crowd who have zero clue about skating, and just came to the show to scream and squeel at the sight of their idol. and their idol, just walking and shaking her butt on the ice, instead of skating. it was painful to watch. "the sparkling pants" was really the highlight of "the queen" performance. it's good that dave have noticed it
