Motorola basically started it with Atrix, TBH. Dex was the first solution that got some good press after Microsoft Continuum failure. I have no idea why Windows Mobile failed so hard, but if it didn't this would be a standard feature for years now :)

@@darkentity94 According to those in charge, it was inaction on their part that messed them up. They had Windows Mobile, but didn't do anything to compete with Android and iOS until the two had already taken the dominant spots in the market. It was an uphill battle after that. I remember that the main reason I didn't buy Windows Phones was I was already used to the type of interface that Android was using, being similar to Windows Mobile. I chose not to use iOS because I felt like they copied the Nintendo Wii's UI. I know. A bit petty on my part.

This is literally the only "old school design, new hardware" tablet in existence. At least according to GSM arena's database. You limit the display to below 10 inches and put in a vaguely modern 6GB of ram and you're left with a grand total of 3 options. Exactly 1 if you want a headphone jack. The small tablet market is non-existent.

If you don't need the very very annoyingly old school spec of 323+ppi (most tablets with this ppi came out in 2013-2014, it's shameful) then Samsung's Xcover tablets are very much old school design with new hardware and in a very dramatic way.

Motorola actually had an Atrix phone back in the day that came with a dock and gave you a full Linux desktop. This was well before the S8 and before Samsung was the behemoth they are today.

It was cumbersome and not too well implemented, but it was a huge step forward as a proof of concept. When it failed, it looked like OEMs wouldn’t proceed with the one-device endeavor, but thankfully Samsung came along and knocked it out of the park.

I was debating on getting this tablet a few months back, but ultimately decided on a refurbished Samsung tab s6 from microcenter (the og not the s6 lite.) The oled screen is amazing! I would definitely recommend considering a used or refurbished tab s6 just for the screen alone. It's a real shame that the base models of the tab s7 and s8 have lcd screens.

Samsung tablets are pretty horrid, horrible battery life and really sluggish for no apparent reason. I would love Samsung, I really would but since S10 series they really screwed it up big time.

@@SMGJohn really? I haven't had any big issues with my tab s6. I get about 2 and a half full days of use out of the battery with usually about 12 hours of screen on time. Performance is also really great too. I have had those issues in the past with Samsungs A series of tablets, such as the tab a7 which I had before the tab s6. That thing was crazy slow and had really bad battery life. The S series tablets seem good though. Honestly I'm not sure what tablet you used since there hasn't been a s10 tablet yet. The current line of tablets is tab s8.

You know you can overclock the GPU in that tablet it will become much better if you do that. Also you must put a cooling system in it and it will be a super tablet the S6. I believe it has a 865 snapdragon. The last one that you can really overclock

This may be a long shot, but is there any chance of getting an overview of the tablet market as of 2022? Like, I know Lenovo has a few tablets under the Legion brand, and there's obviously the iPad, and presumably some sort of x86 tablet on the market, but I don't really have a good sense of what each product line is going for, and I'm not really sure where to even start looking. Obviously it's probably not possible to cover literally every tablet, but some of the major ones that might be interesting for various use cases, like one or two contenders for portable PC gaming, emulation tablets, tablets great as a second/portable monitor, and so on, would be pretty interesting, because I literally don't even know which companies are all in the tablet space at the moment.

Samsung S series (6,7,8) is top tier, Lenovo makes nice premium tablets that are near on par with Samsung hardware but the software not as good in my opinion. After that, lot of lower end options, some good, a lot bad and then Amazon on low end but soild and good value for the money.

In that scenario, it is effortless to plug in my phone and type email, edit documents, and cruise KZbin (simultaneously) since my display, mouse, keyboard, external storage, ethernet, etc is already hooked up and instantly recognized. Just saying that there is absolutely a use for Dex/PC Mode even in a world where laptops exist.

The desktop mode looks good. On Samsung DeX, many apps can't be resized easily and most of the time you have to restart the app to be able to resize them. I think that's one of the issues with desktop mode on Android. Many apps are designed for fixed aspect ratio/screen size.

I just got the Legion Y700 a few weeks ago. It's the first tablet I've ever owned, and I absolutely love it. My only issue is that tiny swipe movement aren't registered like large swipes or simple taps are, so drawing and note taking kinda sucks. That was nice if them I guess, but for my own peace of mind I went back in and did a factory reset so I could install only the apps that I wanted and give it only the few permissions I felt comfortable giving it. I love this unit. I now own this and rhe 2023 model.....i can handle no headphone jack on the newer y700. BUT the newer one has NO PC MODE....that is a huge deal for me. Is there anything that can be done for newer model for this mode? If not, I will be getting rid of the 2023 y700. I just got it 2 days ago and am a bit disappointed. @@rushmore3927 android emulation is pretty capped in terms of whats possible. also android games are made with low spec devices in mind. as far as streaming and remote play are concerned, they can be done on pretty much any device. that being said, the only thing the tablet is capable of that a device like the retroid pocket 3 isnt would be running aethersx and dolphin. not sure why a smaller screen would be a bad thing, smaller screens are usually more pixel dense so they look sharper and smoother. also the retroid pocket 3 has built in controls so no need to carry around a controller to play games. youre the one messing around here.

To go in fullscreen mode with Minecraft or any other app like Retroarch you just have to press the windows-key and up-key together on the keyboard in Samsung Dex. Left and right snaps the active window to left or right screen. Down minimizes the window.

My Legion Y700 keeps killing any background running apps... Very annoying for apps like VPN and MicroG for KZbin Vanced... One more problem... There seems to be a bug also in PC Mode when displaying PowerPoint slideshow through the video output using Type C to VGA/HDMI dongle... Some slides shows as blank/black screen... What a pity for what otherwise would be a perfect Android tablet...

It retailed for 1200, I don't know if I'd pay 700 for an S8 ultra unless it's storage is maxed out, and even then, it's not such a great value. My brother has one and it's made me really appreciate the significantly higher pixel density of the Y700. It's really not funny seeing individual pixels at a normal viewing distance on a 1200 dollar tablet when I've gotten Kindle Fire HDXs (you know, a ten year old tablet) for ten bucks that have significantly sharper screens (again... Ten year old tablet and it has like 100 more pixels per inch than a modern high end tablet... Some people defend this ferociously too, it's crazy.
