This angelic yet sinister oboe theme

Another one of Tchaikovsky's intriguing melodies, where so much is achieved with so little. Here, the blend between folk melody and classical tradition is so seamless that it creates something infinitely iconic and recognisable. Tchaikovsky's orchestration in Swan Lake is minimal but effective, with a reedy oboe solo over a glimmering texture of string tremolos which to me evokes an image of ghostly moonlight over a lake. The almost immediate contrast with an orchestra tutti with the same theme is tragic and shows the depth of Tchaikovsky's orchestration genius.

When I am 64 I will learn figured bass so I know what that means. I have not seen figured bass on KZbin......
@zachary963
@zachary963 3 ай бұрын
I can’t remember all the details but it just gives the chord inversions. So I64 is a I chord In first inversion. C E G , but it’s spelt E G C. Because it’s a sixth interval from the lowest note (E) to the root note (C), and then a fourth interval from the next chord tone (G) to the root note (C). IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY.
@eoghanbostock958
@eoghanbostock958 2 ай бұрын
@@zachary963you’re somewhat on the right track. A first inversion I chord is I6. I6 is shorthand for I63. It is labelled that way because the intervals in relation to the bass are a sixth and third. Figured bass notation just tells you what the intervals are from the bass note. source: I am a harpsichordist so I have to read figured bass notation all the time.

This melody was actually inspired by the "swan" theme from Lohengrin. Lohengrin is very beautiful, but I think Tchaikovsky's version of the motif is a lot better!

Wasn´t this opening piece to Act 2 and it´s actually a part usually done by a solo of the villain of the story, Baron Rothbard - a dark wizard - which is actually realming over his domains on the deserted ruins of the castle near the lake where Oddette and all her court had became swans after the spell cast by him who could became a kind of prey-bird which is actually hunting there and lurking over all the others there?
@skylarlimex
@skylarlimex 2 ай бұрын
This excerpt is at the end of Act 2 though the opening piece uses the swan theme as well and if I'm not wrong the theme is used as that - to represent the swans at the lake.
@lhadzyan7300
@lhadzyan7300 2 ай бұрын
@@skylarlimex oh I guess it´s a piece that could be used on both the end and the begining of Act 2, and involves both the Swann ladies, including Oddette, and I think Rothbard as a menacing preying bird-like demon on scene, ruthlessly still attempting to lure Princess Oddette to marry him, offering to finish then the spell over all, but she keeps refusing anyways, so he keeps enraging over the refusal. And all this happens before the Prince appears hunting there alongside his friend Benno, and well... they got splitted out later on (I don´t remember why but seems as Rothbart as that bird-like creature makes to get rid of the invaders, however only Benno leaves aways and the Prince returns neverhless so that´s how he mets Oddette a bit while later on.) At the end of Act 2 if that music happens again it´s involving on Rothbart creating the Black Swann copy of Odille to make Oddette unable to met the Prince on the ball of Act 3, so his own plans couldn´t be undone anyways. (He had a brief encounter with the Prince, mid-way of the act, and had to leave out rushedly because he fighted back and well, besides all his magic powers, seems his opponent was too much powerfull physically to make a stand even then, so had to plot better then.) So this is the theme of the Swans and the lake and the deserted castle but it´s actually some of the key-musical themes from the Prologue before Act 1 - which could be either played on dancers or just leave all music flowing on - and well those were themes of the curse upon Odette and her court into swans, and the villain himself which casted that spell at the same. (He got the darker harsh brass sections after all.) People kinda overstate this as just the Swann curse but it involves the VILLAIN actually too!!
