This dub is 100% real. Apparently, the original Japanese Dub flopped in Japan, but they were expecting it to do well and had already contracted a dubbing company to bring it to the West before it released in Japan. When it failed, they still had to uphold the contract, but the failure meant that the original Japanese owners were expecting it to fail in the west as well, so they didn't bother making the dubbing company stick to the source material at all. So the dub company just went nuts and had fun with it, and created this legendary dub. Supposedly this was so good that they reverse dubbed this version back into Japanese with the humor included in the new Japanese dub. No idea how successful that was though.

Ghost Stories was picked up for dubbing by ADV Studios in 2005., they were told to "do whatever it took to sell the show." The only condition was that the basic story and names of major characters and ghosts had to remain intact, but everything else was fair game. As in Japan the show was a bomb in Japan

Synopsis: When 5th-grader Satsuki and her little brother Keiichirou chase their cat Kaya into the old school house, they meet Satsuki's classmates Hajime Aoyama, Leo Kakinoki and sixth grader Momoko Koigakubo. Steven Foster is the person who wrote some of the english parts and some parts are just improvs from the actors and its just perfect. Also the most popular episode in Japan was the episode that ghost that said duh in the dubbed version but in it original version with just performing a ok.

Ghost Stories was a cliche horror anime, but the rights for a dubbing were dropped before the results came in. When the original series massively flopped in Japan, the dubbers were told they could do whatever they wanted for the English release, so they completely changed the script to make it a comedy, and it ended up being pretty popular.

So the funny part in ghost stories is basically the voice actors weren't being paid enough because their budget was extremely low, the English voice actors were allowed to ad-lib. And they made it sync up with the original animation

5:30 or 6:00 pm school dismissal is pretty standard in some of Asia. My schedule was 8:30 AM-5:30 PM. I remember hearing other kids from other countries say they do half days. And I was like... "What would you do the rest of the day? Isn't that kind of a waste?" Cultural thing I guess

It's not - Ghost Stories got two different dubs. This one by ADV Studios and an earlier one by Animax that stayed true to the original. So if you remember a different dub, that's completely possible.
