The short scenes that show the outdoors are transition scenes to indicate "Later that day" that are less on the nose than, for example sponebob's "A while later" cards The multithreaded storylines were popularized by Alfred Hitchock using a writing style he called "Meanwhile back at the ranch" It was so influencal to writing that many writers use it today without knowing how it came to be. Shakespear used various indicators to showcase the transition of time, but not so much on having multithreaded stories running at the same time. As a writer the major benefit of this is to reset tension, so you can build it up again and keep hitting the feel good buttons in people's brains.

The argentinian peso skit is actually even funnier for argentinians since inflation/currency devaluation is the only thing that unites us all, and at this point in time, this skit would work the *exact same way* here in Argentina because by itself it's literally useless too and doesn't buy anything. You can always read us in the comments with things like "the more the country sinks due to inflation, the funnier this skit gets" or "An argentinian peso is worth less here in Argentina than in Japan, at least there they can be used to make jokes"

The thing that, in my opinion, makes the show brilliant, is the way it more accurately shows everyday life by massively exaggerating things. When looking at the small annoyances and tiny joys we experience everyday from an outside or hindsight perspective, yes, they appear insignificant and maybe even silly. But when we're living them, they don't feel insignificant. The amount of times where a tiny thing going wrong stuck with me for over a day or when a simple compliment made my week is more than I've had days in my life. By exaggerating the reactions of the characters to these events, the show more accurately portrays how they feel in the moment and the amount of meaning they have to us right then and there, even if that fades over time. That's why the show is called Nichijou, because it's about the importance of those small things in our everyday lives that mean so much.

One of my favorite hard-to-understand jokes is with the Daruma doll (the weird red thing with one eye). It's historically based on a blind monk, but you draw the eyes in. You draw in the first eye when you make a wish, and you draw in the other eye when the wish comes true. In Nichijou, they drew sunglasses on him. It's a funny way to deface it, because now it looks like the monk decided to stay blind, and no wishes will ever come true. It's also part of an ongoing gag with Buddhist iconography, such as the Daruma Otoshi (stack of wooden blocks that killed Yuuko) and Mai's wooden statues of the Maitreya Buddha.

I still prefer my double-H shirt (if you know, then godbless you, you remember the golden days before they were tragically shut down, gone the way of animehaven before them) which is probably the ultimate, "if you recognize this shirt, shame on you. If you don't...well let's just say you're in good company. My church, my bosses at work, (save for one who just took a picture and said, "that is priceless, I love it" and walked away without explaining himself, leaving me mildly panicked that he'd show the higher ups even though he never did) my parents, my teachers at school...absolultely no one recognizes that shirt. And I bought it from a porn website and it is literally just a large depiction of their logo. If only that image saying, "Recognize this? Beer's on me." had been sold on a shirt, I'd have gotten that one. But honestly, I prefer the one that doesn't get people thinking. If I had that one, it's possible that more than three people would have recognized it. Though I have to admit it was amusing to explain to my teacher exactly where it was from and hear her say, "wait, what's that?" I decided she was better off not knowing, and I think she caught enough of the implications to agree not to ask, given the demographic of the other guy who recognized it.

One funny detail about Hakase: Her name translates to 'Professor', as in specialist on a certain scientific field. The problem is for all we know that could be her actual name or just a title, but the show either can't be bothered explaining it or doesn't care.
@nit0134
@nit0134 2 жыл бұрын
I think that's the joke, because the way it's written in Kanji in the show, it doesn't treat "Hakase (Professor)" as a title, it treats it as her actual name. That's why the Funimation sub doesn't translate it and treats her name as Hakase, because the kanji implies it as her name. And fan made subs do translate it and call her "Professor".
@gabeux
@gabeux Жыл бұрын
@@nit0134 Weird enough, in PT-BR the sub seems to really try to call her Hakase when she's referred to by name, and "Doctor" when e.g. Nano is calling her by the title. PT-BR subbers are truly heroes who don't wear capes, the subs are usually awesome (and fansubs may go the extra length to explain Japanese-focused jokes)

The skit you were asking about at 7:44 is one of my favorites. It's basically about a girl who was deeply affected by a book as a child. She wanted to read it again but after years of searching she could only track down one copy to a small library in a remote village. So she makes the long trek out and finally finds the book that changed her life and brought her so much joy. But years earlier someone else decided that the very same book was unimportant enough to hollow out to hide their emergency weapon (John Wick 3). It's the type of surreal tragic comedy I love but is really difficult to see done well.

"Sometimes we laugh at something without understanding the joke." In 1988, watching Project A-ko as one of the first anime many people in the US watched, 80% of the jokes goes over your head. The Star Destroyer/Spacballs and Yamato/Harlock jokes were easy to understand as those were in the USA years before. So it took dozens of other Anime shows to understand the jokes. No internet back then. Today, I think if a typical anime fan only watched Project A-ko, maybe half the jokes would be missed because it's 35+ year old anime.

The thing that I love about Nichijou that I feel like a lot of others haven't yet is how it balances the surreal and the mundane. The skits involving the main trio, who are all ordinairy japanese schoolgirls, are the most over-the-top, balls-to-the-wall insane depictions of the most mundane of situations. Meanwhile, the Shinonome household, consisting of a ridiculously humanoid robot, her 6-year-old genius creator, and a talking cat, despite having a premise that reads like a spin off of Doraemon, is calm, peaceful, and portrayed in a way that I can only describe as "relaxing."
@duckmine5809
@duckmine5809 2 жыл бұрын
I absolutely love this show's final episode. There's not really a plot to resolve, due to how the show is structured. Instead, what the show does, is finish every single little character arc, or give everyone one last good day. It's Nano's birthday so the trio want to have a surprise party for her. (They don't actually know it's her birthday but they want to do it anyways.) Hakase promises to remove Nano's key and replace it with "the little one." The Vice-Principal tries to play a prank on the Principal like usual, but the prank goes wrong, and the Vice-Principal is the one left freaking out in the end. At the Igo Soccer Club, Sekiguchi tries to confess her feelings to Daiku, but is still too shy. She plays it off by saying she was practicing Igo Soccer, and for the first time, she joins in on the game with Daiku. It's implied he realised she has feeling for him. Mio reminds Yuuko to ask Nano about going to her house in the afternoon, since she forgot. Yuuko sets off. Through Yuuko's clumsiness, she makes Misato buy drinks for Sasahara and herself. Yuuko sneezes, creating a rainbow in the hallway that Sakurai-sensei looks at. She trips over and accidentally recovers Ogi's missing comb, also scaring a dove on the window, which fixes the Principal's toupee. Nano comes over to help Yuuko up, but her hand falls off when Yuuko pulls too hard. She freaks out trying to hide the fact that she's a robot, but Yuuko's first thought is to ask if Nano is alright and if she isn't in pain. She says she's fine, and goes back to trying to explain it away, but Yuuko interrupts again, finally asking her if everyone can go to her house later. It cuts to one of the Rock, Paper, Scissors skits from the first half of the show, and Nano finally wins against Hakase. Later on it's revealed that Sakamoto is actually Nakamura-sensei's missing cat. He's running from her in the street when Nano shows up and starts talking to her. They talk about their cats, (who are actually the same cat) while Sakamoto thinks to himself about how horrible his life was living with Nakamura, but then realises his life is just about as bad with the Shinonome girls. Nano arrives home, and Hakase finally removes her key. She's ecstatic. The doorbell rings, and she goes to answer, but she starts thinking to herself about her key. She thinks back to earlier that day, when Yuuko saw her hand came off. Nano realises everyone loves her just the way she is. Whether she's a robot or not, everyone is just happy to be her friend. The screen fades out, and when it comes back, the main trio jumps out and surprises Nano with a birthday cake. Nano is shown in the living room, with her key back in. She's surprised by the cake, but Hakase gets too exited and accidentally makes Yuuko drop it. Nano heads off to the kitchen to get the cake she had prepared already. Hakase walks in, and says she can put "the little one" in now. Nano tries to explain that she's happy to have the key now, but Hakase ignores her. She runs behind her back, pulls out the key, puts a little screw inside, and then puts the key back in. She tells Nano that the key will now spin when she's happy. Nano tells Hakase to take the cake to the living room, while she will take the tea. Hakase runs off with the cake, and can be heard tripping over in the distance. Nano rushes over to see Yuuko with cake all over her chest. Hakase cries while Mio tries to sort the situation out. Yuuko tells Nano to help her clean up the cake. Everyone starts arguing with each other before Yuuko suddenly bursts out laughing. Everything's in chaos, and Nano gets flustered by everything, but we see the key in her back. It's spinning. Everything's going wrong but Nano's just happy to be with her family and friends. Sorry for leaving such a massive comment, but I just love this show so much. This ending really made me cry. Hilarious that so many people need this, benchmark of failed Bluray sales due to cost of animation and from an absolute rising star studio KyoAni, to get them notice that comedy is funny. And has been in a hundred other shows, although the ANIMATION is what elevates this one. And drops it dead when the animation is NOT there. The amount of love invested in this anime is incredible. A lot of people don't know this, but they made songs to represent each character. You can find them on youtube, like Sakomoto songs or Mai singing the opening at karaoke and trolling the original singer in the process.

I think the best thing about it is that its a massive middle finger to the expectations set out by our society. It hits you with stuff that doesn't make sense and confuses you and then just when you've come to expect the unexpected BAM it hits you with something totally relatable and your questioning whether you really understood, only for it to flip to something completely unrelated and confusing. Like you said its so hard to explain in any way. It just is what it is and it's awesome.

I’ve been recommending this show to people for years. I think it has gained some popularity from KZbin clips overtime, but sadly it still remains as an underrated masterpiece. I don’t think there will ever be another show that captures my style of humor the way Nichijou has.
@christopherzajonskowski7123
@christopherzajonskowski7123 2 жыл бұрын
Underrated? I don't think that really applies here at all. The show is recognized as the holy grail of comedy anime pretty much since its conception. It's not the only good comedy show of course, but pretty much the one doing everything right in each category you could possibly rate - and even with other shows sometimes doing better in some categories, there are rarely ever ones reacing the overall 'artistic quality' of Nichijou. So it's not so much 'underrated' as it is 'not widely known' - or - 'not mainstream' - what is obvious because those things never are. For each person knowing/watching some of the best pieces of art there are always thousands consuming mainstream art & entertainment instead - that's just how it is. An Adam Sandler movie just reaches more peoples type of humor than some fringe french comedy will - but on an artistic and craftmanship level, it's usually clear what has the upper hand. I usually dislike the "I'm special because I'm not mainstream"-mentality myself - but there is no argument around the fact that there simply is truth to it. Sometimes somethings lack of public perception just underlines the fact that this is at least correlated to it being 'special' and not meant for everyone to be enjoyed. Nichijou might be one of the best animes I personally every watched - but it's hardly in my top-10 of animes to recommend to others. Even people who are into anime - not even talking about 'outsiders'. For the same reasons I wouldn't recommend Joshiraku (or most of Shaft shows) to someone not interested or versed in japanese (pop-)culture or the Monogatari-series to someone who just takes what they see happening on screen on face-value instead of applying some level of literary interpretation to the scenes... For what its worth; Nichijou is in the top 200s both for score & popularity on MAL - so I don't think 'underrated' is the right term here. ;)

@@christopherzajonskowski7123 I am not very involved anime list rankings, or anything like that, so I can only make claims based on what I’ve heard within the anime community. I’m glad to hear that the people who have watched Nichijou rate it very highly. But it is still frustrating to me that Nichijou is still fairly unknown, and is hardly ever recommended to other people. And even when Nichijou is brought up in conversations, it’s just regarded as “that funny anime where the principle fights the deer”. I agree that most casual viewers are very inept when it comes to finding artistic value in media. Anime fans in particular have a terrible tendency to disregard every category involved producing an anime, and have even come up with a three letter word to summarize their opinion, “MID”. Like I said, I almost never look at anime ratings so the only basis for my original claim was Nichijou’s popularity among anime fans, and general opinions that I have heard over the years. “Underrated” may not have been the best term to use, but it is one people are familiar with, and it is often associated with things that are unpopular. I think the term also does a good job at conveying that, even if a show isn’t popular, it is still worth watching.

10:39 I mean, it's funny for two reasons. One is the escalation of the absurdist humor, from the principal having a "simple" stand-off with a random deer to him using wrestling moves on it. The other is Yuuko's understandable "wtf is happening" reaction and her being sort of like a deer in the headlights, unable to do anything. Even as she looks around, so as to find someone else to share this absurdity with, we can relate to what it must be like, as a concept, to be placed in a situation where one sees something so outrageous that they just have to get someone else to be their fellow witness, but is unable to do so. This is then compounded by the absurdity that what she's witnessing is HER PRINCIPAL SUPLEXING A FUCKING DEER. I think arguing that it's just "lol, funny 'cause random" is unfair to the cleverness of the humor, at least in that particular scene.

My favourite relatable one is still the coffee shop episode. Reminded me of my first time to Starbucks as a kid, ordering for my own. Nichijou has a nice split between nuanced, localized (if you arent japanese, or well versed in japanese culture you wont get it), and relatable universal dumb experiences. That combined with randomness of jokes makes even people who arent japanese think it’s a random joke for the nuanced ones themselves. And animation quality is top notch. A similar slice of life comedy anime is Asobi Asobase. You should check it out hahahaha.

This "gen z humor" has existed locally for a long time from Cyanide and Happiness to Perry Bible Fellowship and Farside. And deeply within anime sensibilities since Pani poni dash and Strawberry Marshmallow. The defining factor of gen z seems to be the end of the brief stint where Hollywood just dictated that everyone follow bland humor that nobody actually likes, and boomers to millennials genuinley believing they need everything "localized" for thier locale, ever since the invention of TV.

It's the Japanese version Monty Python's Flying Circus sketches. Just as non sequitur, just as random, just as nonsensical... only without the cruder humor and with a massive VFX budget. Which is fine, because the essence of the absurdist humor is there, and I love every minute of it!
