Very good conversation and SO many awesome points made! This episode is SO good!! I love when Julie said that if a child needs Algebra 2 for something they want to do they will figure it out. YES! We have a 16 year old on the path to an engineering career and this has been our experience! He is working through Pre Calculus and Physics successfully on his own because he has this goal in mind! And I just look him in the eyes and listen to his scientific rambles having no clue what he is talking about but supporting him just the same! 😊😂 My twelve year old just taught herself how to crochet - we supplied the yarn, needle, and the ok to turn on the WiFi and use the tablet and she found a video on KZbin and ran with it. We have a 13 year old who can cook better than me! It’s SO fun to watch them pursue their passions and giftings and I highly recommend this way of homeschooling 👍🏻❤️ P.S. Love what was said at the end too, about how some just need the structure of a checklist and bookwork - this served us well when our two youngest came home from China - they just needed that structure!

Thank you so much for this podcast. I needed to listen to it! Have been struggling with being pressured to have my kids in a certain level of knowledge by external people, and was letting that "eat me up" and cause fear and frustration in my kids! NO MORE! And if the fear comes back, I'll be rewatching this video. Making changes in our schedule ASAP and will give them more time for passions!

This is so amazing. My parents public schooled us but they always said they wanted to give us a love for learning. All throughout my childhood we were learning new activities or going to museums to learn new things. Now as an adult I love to learn! There is a fine balance between knowing that there are hard things that you have to do (that sometimes you don't want to do) and that you have passions to drive themselves. I think both are important and different skill sets. I am a stay at home house wife. Within the last 6 months I have taught myself to sew and I love it. I would do it everyday if I could but I can't because I have other responsibilities that I don't love but still have to do. I believe part of learning to love learning is to learn that sometimes are going to be hard and you still have to do them and persevere. You can't just give up. It feels like both of you backwards parent. This is where you start with strick rules and things that must be done and as that child learns those things and boundaries they get more freedoms. In those situations you have to trust your kids.

I love Julie! Such a treat to have you both on a podcast, and glean Wisdom from both of you. I couldn’t agree with y’all more. My entire reason for homeschooling is to have a God centered curriculum with a Biblical foundation, but I felt so overwhelmed starting out because the only option seemed to be traditional schooling at home, which defeated my purpose. I prayed about it, and God totally changed my perspective to exactly what y’all discussed. I love Julie’s label of “Delight Directed” versus “unschooling” because our children are learning valuable lessons that cannot be experienced in a classroom. Not to mention in a world where knowledge on basic home maintenance is being lost, our children will still be able to cook, clean, and raise children! Many blessings ladies

I love that you tackled this subject with Julie. She has been so encouraging to me on my homeschool journey. I've been really unhappy with how the people around me are doing highschool homeschool. There is a huge focus on either really intense academics or extra curriculars. I personally went to high school as a public schooler and I was ready my junior year to start whatever it was I wanted to do after highschool but I still had 2 years left to trudge through and the worst part was, no time. Everything was crammed full all the time and I was continuously exhausted and I missed a lot of life with my siblings. I want different for my kids but I've also not heard anyone talk about what that looks like. I also would like to help my kids get into a career or passion that can support them just for their own sake. I'm glad that you also tackled the subject of video game addiction. I know people personally who decided to 'unschool' and they completely stopped teaching their children and all they do is video game all day. That's definitely not helpful to children or their future. Thanks for the great conversation!

When I was in high school I fell in love with editing video. I was obsessed. I learned how to rip video from dvds and vhs so I could mess with it and use music and was allowed to buy a green screen and learned programs…. No one taught me. I did it all by myself. I did a deep dive. And to this day I wonder what else I would’ve done or how far I could’ve gone with it all if I was homeschooled.

We are doing Fun Schooling this year!! We have already been doing it in a way but I just found out about it a month ago but we are going to lean into the concept a little more this year. My daughter started writing and illustrating her first book and my eldest just started learning piano and wants to be a composer. It's going great so far seeing how well the are learning by allowing them to choose thier direction of learning. They do a little math and reading and language arts as well the rest of the day is focused on thier interests!

Oh I could listen to this topic over and over. My 7 year old daughter compares herself to her church friends who are in 2nd grade and she’s really embarrassed that they seem smarter than her. I’d love if a topic like that could be explored! Because I felt a lot of pressure off by watching this, and I’ve never even applied pressure on her to need to be a certain “level”, yet she compares to her peers.

Love the part where she was talking about her friend who had academic knowledge but didn't know what to do with their lives. With the question you had about lazy children who don't want to really do anything. . .I think sometimes you have to push them slightly. . .encourage them. Help them learn about what interests them and what they can do to feed into that. I have a child who doesn't want to go to college, and I said, "That's totally fine. You still have to try to get a job." He just turned sixteen and I have a rule that when you turn sixteen, you have to get a job. I think that sometimes, being in the work field, you have to learn at least basic things about working and maybe in time they will realize what interests you more, you can figure out what else you want to do. We tell them they have to have a job and also have hobbies. We are not cruel; we just do a lot of talking and encouraging while seeing what they are into now and trying to help towards that. Most teens don't know what they want to do but teaching them to learn financial stability and independence is so important to us. Her little baby is amazing. I love that she is 43 with an 18-year-old and a six-month-old. I have a nearly 18-year-old and am 41 trying to have another baby (my last) so when I see moms who are in their forties having babies, it makes me feel good since I am in that spot (I was 39 with my last baby).

I homeschooled my 5 kids now ages 33 to 24. We were kind of the opposite in that we unschooled in the younger years but during the high school years, they wanted to take classes at the local co-op so things got more formal. But they all turned out well and still love to learn. They are all employed and enjoy their careers. But I completely agree that children want to learn, want to become independent and competent at what appeals to them. Most of the time we just have to get out of the way.

I love this perspective. How would you handle living in a state that measures your child by standardized testing every other year? A state that requires certain courses, including science, history, foreign language....I feel bound by the regulations even though my heart is 100% in your perspective of just teaching them the basics and then letting them pursue learning in their own interests. I feel like our entire day is run by what schooling must be done, rather than focusing on the most important things to us personally. I would really appreciate your advice. From a mama of 5 kiddos 10 years and under.

I loved this podcast. Thank you for this! Durendra Wilsons book the 4 hour school day, really started giving me this new view, of letting your child learn what they love. One question I have though is how do I know what my children are really interested in if I don't have items material/tools available. An example is my daughter says she'd like to learn to play the violin, but if I buy her one that's quite a big purchase. What happens if she isn't interested after all? How can she not keep her hands from it if it's not in our home? So we have to buy it first right?Or do I just need wait for a violin to show up for free? 😅

Question... if you don't have a graduation deadline or "party" (which I think is fine), do your children have a h.s.diploma? Or do they have a "high school education" if they want to get a job where it's required? No judgement at all, I'm just genuinely curious. I homeschool our children as well, and it's a mental battle I have. Just curious how you have dealt with that. I do feel a little "looked down upon" at times from other homeschool moms because we have a more traditional approach to school. I tried a Charlotte Mason type of curriculum and my kids were annoyed that they had to do creative things and discussions, so we do a more traditional curriculum. I would like to make a shift, just trying to find a balance that won't "upset the fruit basket" too much! 😅 Please don't judge us old-school moms! 😅

I guess I am one of those people who retain everything 😅 But I am also a political scientist, and I do struggle with this idea of "people should know certain things about the world ( e.g. to form informed opinions)"? I am not saying that the public school system is doing a stellar job at that, but still...
