Although he is older than the Giza pyramids and Stonehenge, the 5,300-year-old Tyrolean Iceman continues to teach us things. His story is set in central Europe 5,300 years ago from the northern Alps of Italy to the eastern lands along the Danube River to Vinca, the earliest European Bronze Age civilization. Here are the Iceman photos iceman.eurac.edu/

I am from Canada and when I was a little kid, we had a neighbor from Corsica, a true Corsican without french ancestry and I swear, he looks just like the iceman. He speak like an Italian from the meridional south of France, similar southern french accent as people from Marseille. He is dead now but am sure he would be proud of having such an ancient related cousin from prehistoric times, as he was a nationalist who didn't like Corsica to be part of France.

A video on Ötzi's health care processes would be eye opening. It made me laugh to learn, ten years or so after his discovery, that Ötzi had acupuncture for his arthritis, which was probably because of his Lyme disease. He was carrying herbs for his ailments. Such a fascinating story, he is a gift from the past.

Excellent video! I agree with most of your interpretations, and feel evidence shows the Iceman knew his killer. The arrow shaft was missing from the point implying it was intentionally removed to prevent association, and the copper axe left behind to avoid suspicion. This behavior suggests the killer was from Otzi's village as outsiders would likely have raided the gear in addition to keeping the shaft. The copper axe would only be recognized by a small circle of people, so an outsider would likely have stolen the axe and an insider would leave it with the body. Secrets are very hard to keep, especially when a murderous raid or posse-style death happens. If multiple people were involved it's more likely the ambush would be gossiped and Otzi's villagers locate the body. Just the fact Otzi was never found suggests: 1) this was an insider job by one person from Otzi's village, and 2) the body was likely transported to an area no person would travel. An enemy clan would not likely take time to carefully relocate a body. An earlier conflict likely ensued in Otzi's village, and someone wanted revenge on the old man. He left the village so tempers would calm, but didn't know his killer was following up the mountain. I have no doubts this was ambush hit job by someone Otzi knew...
@jasonborn867
@jasonborn867 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnbell1396 Indeed, just the fact the body remained undiscovered strongly suggests it was moved off the main trail to an untraveled location. This would not be the behavior of a warring rival clan who typically would raid the gear, but rather someone who didn't want the body discovered. The best explanation is that someone from Otzi's inner circle killed him. What type of earlier encounter do you feel explains the four different types of human blood and the defensive wound on his hand? I raise this question because if four different blood types are accurate it suggests a potentially large confrontation, which seems counter to a small village dispute arising between a few locals. Thoughts?
@grovermartin6874
@grovermartin6874 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnbell1396 Not suppressed. The book, The Man in the Ice, was thoroughly researched, and published as soon as they had enough to publish. Articles about his clothing, diet, sources of food, tools, and herbs have been appearing in the scientific, and sometimes the popular, press ever since his body was found and reported to the police. That was in 1991. Even the deaths of the Austrian or German hikers who found his body were in the news. Ötzi is a scene stealer.
@ShanghaiRooster
@ShanghaiRooster 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting analysis. However, you might be reading a bit too much into the arrow-head having been removed. An arrow would have been a valuable resource, and so recovering it so could be used again would be simply normal practice.
@jasonborn867
@jasonborn867 2 жыл бұрын
@@ShanghaiRooster It's a good question just how valuable an arrow was, and is likely dependent on the availability of hardwood resources as well as time spent honing and fletching the shaft. It may be arguable the arrowhead was more valuable than the shaft, but nevertheless your point is well taken. Based on the fact Otzi's body remained undiscovered by villagers strongly suggests his body was moved off the trail to an untraveled location where it wouldn't be found. In addition, if the arrow fletching and potential markings or colors on the shaft identified an owner it would be logical to remove the evidence. If it were more likely the shaft was taken based on value it seems other valuable gear would be gone as well, particularly if unidentifiable to Otzi. But nothing else appears missing, so for me the shaft was taken to avoid suspicion in the event his body was discovered. Tough call either way, but that was my reasoning, friend.

No wonder he was closely related to sardinians, corsikans and other today south europeans. It was about 3500bc when the pastorials from the steppe came to central europe and it took some centuries for them to spread all over Europe. They might not have reached the central alpes yet in Ötzi times. Today the pastorials make up to 80% of the skandinavian DNA and less than 10% of the sardinian DNA. The sardinians are by 90% identical with the early farmers who started to move to europe from 7000bc on and reached the british islands 3000 years later. Plus some percent of western hunter gatherer who lived in europe already.

Or he was part of bigger chase through the mountains and killer didn't have time to loot because there were others he needed to kill or evade. Two confirmed kills shown by retrieved arrow makes me believe that there could be more arrows he didn't retrieve because he didn't have time or they were broken. There could be more bodies that were not found, eaten by animals or gathered by relatives to be burried after the battle/raid like the body of wounded companion or slave he was carrying.

Good vid. I've always been interested in the old guy. There is a problem though. Seems a lot of folks are creating scenarios around how and why the old guy was there and what happened with other people who may have been involved with him and more importantly it seems that they are putting their modern morals and ways of thinking on a man that lived more than 5000 years ago. Yes we have the forensics, but they only tell part of the story. Anything else is speculation and should be discouraged. For all we know the old guy could of been the bad guy here that went on a killing spree and was killed trying to make his escape. As far as that copper axe goes maybe it is us who is putting all the importance on it and to them it was just an everyday item. Or perhaps the people that the old guy was fighting had their own copper axes and therefore had no need for his. If you ask me I'd say that the guy had gotten into two or three skirmishes when he received all of his wounds including the arrow in the shoulder blade a day or two before reaching his death location. And once there he succumbed to his wounds.

It wasn't a crime, it was a tribal fight. He might even have token 'first blood' of some enemies. Maybe he was with some of his own on a mission in a neighbouring territory. Once discovered a fight broke lose, or maybe an ambush. His comrades were killed or wounded, he was then alone but they were on his track. He made a desperate attempt to get over the alps into safety. They got him at high altitude, at the border. His belongings not looted because it was a kind of 'honor-conflict' , signalling to his tribesmen that now he had payed with his live the attackers were satisfied.

the one found was named Arno, and he was a fierce leader. His trouble came when he tried to raid another encampment, he talked BIG and stirred the others to follow him, then left them when he realized the encampment was too strong for his forces. Two survived behind him to escape, one of these died on returning. The other saw the big coward on his return, he was hunting him, for vengeance, you see the results. The gear was left out of contempt. The removal of the shaft came when he showed proof of his actions to some other. This ones' own encampment never knew the whole story. The dead man was hero of sort and could not be defamed for sake of the encampment, and that is why they were left the SECOND time, when the shaft was removed. The dread enemy had captured the weapon when he fell beneath their onslaught. He was left to rot without ceremony, despised.

Since we're speculating, maybe Ötzi murdered a head man accounting for one of the two blood types on his arrow and took the dead guys axe. After retrieving his arrow he killed another person, pulling his arrow out again. But, a relative of one or both of the dead men knew what happened and finding him in the area attacked him in revenge. Ötzi escaped with his life and headed for the mountains to make his get-away. His attacker quickly grabbed his bow and arrow and tracked him down. After shooting Ötzi in the shoulder the relative approached to finish the job and take his equipment. But, Ötzi was not dead. Although seriously wounded he was able to defend himself causing the relative to give up the fight and return to the village. The rest is history.

How about, instead of Otzi being a chief travelling to trade with other villages, he was himself a trader sent by his chief for that purpose and was given the copper axe as a sign of the chiefs authority to act on his behalf. That would suggest that the murderer(s) would not take the axe with them as it would be recognised as a very high status symbol, besides it was something they couldn’t “fence”, maybe also there was a superstition surrounding it.

Well it has now been discovered that the Iceman killed two persons with his bow and arrow just days before he was killed himself. I think any ordinary homicide detective would say that this guy had it coming to him. For what ever reason, he and perhaps some of his friends or fellow tribesmen were in a conflict with other people. Thr Iceman survived but was apparently alone and likely fleeing from friends or allies with those that he killed. They caught up with him and it was all over. My guess is that he was pursued by several men and that he planned to kill them as soon as he got to the slope of the mountain where he was found. He could have shot them more easily than they could have hit him with arrows. But he was killed first and before he reached the top of that mountain.

He had a family to feed, and his tribe was probably starving due to changes in the climate or viability/diminishment of agricultural fields and game. He had many wounds testifying to his encroaching many competitive tribes territories. In short, everybody was encroaching everybody, and 'scrounging for his existence' was common. 32nd century BC, how coincidental! When did the surviving cultures start their historical chronicles? Sumerian, Babylonian, Egyptian, Mayan? 3200 BC. And, amateur me found library information regarding world-meteor, extinction-impact events around 7200 BC, and 3200 BC!

At 45 years of age,as they scientist estimates, during prehistoric times, you are an elderly wise man,and less likely to commit a murder or thievery by yourself, but your sons may do it for you. When you a chieftan you don't run away like a criminal, unless they overthrow you and you have to run with a relative. I believe that he was abandoned by his own villagers. A group of man took control of the village and chased him away , and he ran with one or a few surviving relatives, transporting one on his back for a while, before his enemies decided to follow him in the mountains, making him leaving the wounded body to run faster, until they catch-up with him, wounding him with an arrow before leaving there when they saw the weather worsen. Alone without his comoa6, he lost consciousness or play opossum, but in fact couldn't get in his feet later because of loss of blood and endup with an heart attack.

Maybe the killer is also a hunter like him looking for some animals in the mountain range .he got one and carry on his shoulders and that's the time he was shot at the back . Kill him with a final blow on his head and leave him with his weapon . Anyway ,that is only theory

I agree - use reason not hate or fear. Regretfully, a certain station that practices vulpine mendacity and often mouthed by “foxy” ladies is promulgating sarcasm as conversation.
