I was watching this fairly old documentary where people were being interviewed about playing video games when they were kids in the arcades. Each person being interviewed had graphics showing their name and the game(s) they mastered. One guy was talking about someone who actually outsmarted Asteroids. What the guy did is destroyed all of the asteroids except for one small one. Then he would let his ship float around and kill the UFO every time it would appear just to build up lives. All the while avoiding destroying the single small asteroid. It is amazing how people would choose a game, perfect it and run with it.
@guymanicone79218 ай бұрын
Yup, we all did that
@Foxonian8 ай бұрын
That was called playing "ships". Atari eventually added a patch to the program that would have one of the small ships go out of its way to blast the last rock. Before that some operators would intentionally speed the game up so it was harder to play "ships".

did that with galaga at a pizza joint when the game came out. would play for an hour on a quarter. place got tired of me doing that so they hired me. worked there 5 years

Yes, young person who never played Asteroids. This is called "UFO Hunting" - until operators got the "hard kit small UFO kills on first shot" ROMS for the game. Then came Asteroids Deluxe and it was all over...

Gopros are action cameras. They have fixed focus optics which means you will never get them to focus on objects up close.

I had one of these in collage (early 80's) . Had it set up in the Fraternety collecting beer money. The power supply went out on it one time, and I had replace caps or something to get it working again. My best score was in the 600,000's which takes like 4 hours -once your good enough it is a marathon on the fingers and arms. I loved that it came with a full schematic, as an EE student it was pretty interesting ( There was a microprocessor, but the display was pretty much a state machine that would draw out all the vectors. - 4096x4096 resolution IIRC (maybe only 1024x1024, it's been almost 40 years))

Nice work. What a beautiful piece of nostalgia. The wear marks just add authentication. Good it's being maintained and taken care off.
@chrishamm4078 ай бұрын
On that cap meter, you need an ESR meter.. you can usually increase uF a little when replacing a cap so I'm not so sure the ones measuring a few high on that meter would be causing the problem just for that. I don't think I've never measured a cap's microfarads. I know you usually replace them all out of preventive maintenance but if you get an ESR meter will check in-circuit and usually show exactly which ones are full of life and which ones are dead. Obviously change any bulging ones too, but usually that's it. Love watching the arcade fixes on the channel btw.

leaky caps can look like they have "more" capacitance on a capacitance meter. (way out of spec like these ones). A high ESR on an ESR meter is also a sign of failure. Learn Electronics Repair has a video that goes over that.

That's like doing the timing belt on a car, in most cars, you have to take the waterpump out just to replace the timing belt, so why would you put the existing pump back in!? Just replace the water pump at the same time.

What a nice example of one of the core juggernauts that changed the arcades back in the day. Between space invaders, asteroids, donkey Kong and pac man, asteroids was always my fave. Great combination of sound and graphics, the jaws like bump bemp bump bemp at the beginning with the blaster fire and explosions with the crisp and smooth animation just made it a winner. Nice job Joe! You guys ever get a sinistar machine in? Have a good weekend.

MATT OR JOE, Why do some arcade games using these external FILTER PC BOARDS after the power supply connectors? I'm not sure what these additional filter pc boards do but some arcade games have them and others don't.
@eDoc20207 ай бұрын
It's to reduce electrical interference. Without a filter some electronics will wreak havoc with nearby radios.

The higher number on caps doesn't mean better. That is a sign of leakage. The meters test capacitors based on the speed they are charged. So if the capacitor is leaky, it will take longer to charge, possibly making the meter misinterpret the results. Taking longer doesn't always mean it is "fuller" than the rated capacity. If you want to test this, test a new capacitor, but with a resistor across it. It might test higher than rated. I don't know what value to experiment with, maybe 2K or 1.2K, I don't know. Or maybe 470 or 100. And the tester might misinterpret the simulated leakage as a sign that it is larger than the rated capacity.
