The mid/late 90s was a real high-point for touring cars, and motorsport as a whole. So many great cars, so many great names, some sadly no longe with us.

6:20 B5 A4's definitely did not have McPherson strut front suspension. They had an otherwordly, overly complex multi-linkish setup, that frankly, was not very durable. Not double wishbone, for sure, but probably closer to that in function than a strut setup.

The supertouring rules meant that the race car suspension has to follow the road car (in principle anyway) so wholesale swapping of strut for double wishbone was not allowed. Many manufacturers designed the road cars with the race cars in mind.

The a4 b5 has a multilink front axle (4link) as standard, as well as a double wishbone rear axle (only the quattros) that’s why everyone loves the driving charcteristics of a b5 quattro, the first and lightest of all round multilink suspension small audi limousines and avants

This era was truly special! My dad took me to my first ever race at Brands Hatch in 94.. the Alfa 155 that year was absolutely stunning! Nice to see the Audi up close. Loved TOCA 2 on the PS1 and this was the best car on the game. Remember the Primera being pretty handy as well 👌🏻

I absolutely adored the A4 and the Laguna when I was a kid, I remember the commentary of Tiff Needell on the original Toca touring car game and was always torn between the A4 and the Laguna haha. Great to see that! I have seen a couple of super tours up close at Knock hill and brands hatch. Knock hill had Vauxhall cav, one of these, the honda accord, ford Mondeo, ( the older one, which was the only one to survive) I think there was an one of the older BMWs from the late 80s. Only four went around the circuit I remember, the Audi sadly never ran. The cav was restored from what I remember, the others were just used for shows, Bar the honda which was used as a raced. But retired, that maybe back in action again for the hscc, which a lot of these super tours came back. I do remember when me and my dad going to croft to see the BTCC in 1999, We had the chance to hear the Volvos on tick over, they were noisy! The tech was wearing ear muffs, He just had checked the wheels, and then gave the engine a blip for us! Sounded well vicious! Shame this era died, Not to keen on the NGTC regs the btcc has now. I have noticed though in the last few years the manufactures have started to go back to this with the TCR regs. Which I love the idea!

Great video and information! The road version of the b5 had multilink in the front and not a macpherson strut that was in the b4 cars. On a side note, the suspension in a b4 was modified from a macpherson strut to avoid the problems that came with it in older cars

What I've seen through the years of owning different cars is that they are always better than some people claim. Never had problems with Audi's. Maybe the thing is that if you know how to take care of the car, it's usually going to work well. A total idiot can break any car quickly.

When I was young my dad worked for NDFS and had to man the stand for them at the various county shows and as such we'd go to visit him/see the show. One year their stand was opposite the big Audi and Vauxhall displays where they had Biela's A4 and Warricks Vectra (I'd guess this was around 98/99 at either the Devon/Cornwall show) on display, it had been a typical British summer and both of the manufacturers had been having trouble with their electrics due to rain and so the NDFS crew let them make use of their tea and coffee making facilities. As a result I got given a close up tour of the cars, had a sit in the Audi, got given some posters and other merchandise but the highlight came at the end of the show when they were packing everything away and I got a ride around the car park in the Vectra . I don't think he got it out of second gear but being that I was kneeling on a pile of coats and hanging onto the roll cage that was plenty exciting enough for my young brain. I can't recall much else apart from it being super loud and everything rattled.

I have one of these cars in my garage. Unfortunately , it’s a Scalextric model! Fortunately, I got to experience the real thing at Knockhill racing circuit in the 90s. What a glorious engine sound it had. Thanks for doing such a great job on this video. The camera work was first class and brought back so many happy memories of watching the BTCC in the 90s.

I first watched racing as a kid when john clelland was driving a mk2 escort like a nutter then i got the bug for touring car i loved it so much i bought and modified a primera GT to look the same but frank biela driving that fxxxxxg thing blew my mind the first time i seen him pass through duffas dip at knockhill on 4 wheels not 2 like the rest it was like an f1 car. Did a quick search as was curious as to the power output/displacement, came up with this from a similar car which sold in 2016 for £112k 305 hp, 1,995 cc DOHC four-cylinder engine with Bosch Motronic 2.8 management, six-speed sequential transmission, front and rear independent double-wishbone suspension, and four-wheel ventilated disc brakes with adjustable balance.

Totally agree with you that this era of the BTCC was the magical era, the Volvo 850 estate, Audi A4, BMW 3 series and even the Cavalier/ Vectra were decent in those days on the track and some of the personalities of the drivers such as John Cleland when he got took out by Steve Soper in 1992 really made it entertaining.

Great car - it followed on from the Audi 80, also raced by Biela in the European Championship) and then led the WTCC - esp in 1996 IIRC winning 7 championships (Minichamps made a special display of all cars). Forming Club Audi Australia, we followed it for 5 years and had a ball at each race and of course the Bathurst 12 hours. Really great days and I still have the Tamiya 1:10 RC model to build bought from Beatties in 1997 ;-)

Correct me if I am wrong Jay but my understanding is that b4 80/90 audis were McPherson struts up front. All B5's were 5 link f double wishbone rear. The B5 was the first chassis to switch from Mcpherson F/E to a 5 link F/E w a virtual steering axis allowed by the complex mechanics of the 5 link set up

One of the early season races at Thruxton Biela had a shunt in qualifying and had to start from the rear. He ended up on the podium. In a sprint race in the dry. That's how dominant this car was. Although I remember the Dunlops were more durable than the competition at the time which would've helped at Thruxton...
