Turbocharged engines right out of the factory tend to be tuning friendly as not only the already installed turbo can provide more air with ease, adequate hardware is often standard stuff on such an engine. This is the Audi 1.8T, known as the 1.8T 20V, and it is a perfect example of such a motor.

Had a A4 1.8t for 5 years and 70000 km (160-230k). The car had modded downpipe, exhaust and injectors and made about 225 hp. Drove it like i stole it for the entire 70k km and the only thing that failed was some EVAP valves and a crank position sensor. Never missed a beat and did not leak a drop of oil. Awesome engines although a little weak in low RPM and not the best fuel economy considering its displacement.

Good review on the 1.8t 20v engine. Very very good solid engine for big turbo builds. A couple other things to note though…. The main caps on the crank tend to fail after around 600bhp so people now change them out for billet main caps. I’ve got an S3 8L with 642bhp and 516ft lbs on 99 Ron fuel with water meth injection. One of the highest powered S3’s here in the UK. Pretty much changed everything in the engine to make sure it’ll take it and more in future.

there are issues on the 1.8t tho: turbos and headers like to crack, theyre consumables on those engines due to the head being a hot one. oil sludge that can block the oilintake from the pump, so you should be doing your oilchange atleast once a year or every 10k km. sometimes even the head can crack from valve to sparkplug hole, but thats rare. other than that, these cars are getting old so youll be needing to do lots of cooling hose replacement (nearly all on my 99tt bursted by now), some stuck theromstats here and there, some leaking cooling flanges. some leaking valvecovers and oilpans, other than that, if taken good care of they are pretty reliable. also they are huge differences between the 150 and 180hp engines to the 225/240hp engines. the higher power one feature double oil squirters for the pistons, dual intercoolers, a shorter and flipped intake, bigger turbo and bigger injectors. other than that great video, you covered a good amount of infos. much love from germany

Of course the thermostat was stuck open with a blade from the water pump, but even after it got stuck closed and boiled over countless times, on way home, frying up the oil, I've got it cleaned and tuned and drove it like a hooligan, for another 5 years until "it broken down again", loosing coolant in seconds! The guy who bought it and fixed it for ridiculous little money, still drives it!!

Yeah finally my favored engine! :D Thanks for that! I had a Audi A4 1,8T BEX with 190 HP. VisioRacer allready mentioned the fals air intake-problem. This is really easy to fix, just lift the oil lid at running engine. If it sucks vacuum, then you have to replace the Kurbelwellengehäuse-Entlüftungsventil (Crankcase ventilation membrane) this part costs about 30 euro. Also very common are heatcracks in the exhaust manifold. They usually close trough heat extension after warming the engine up. Sry for the bad english^^

Well... my US spec 1.8T had issues all over. Failing coil packs, cracked head, starter issues, failed intake hoses. The icing on the cake was a failed timing belt tensioner at 50k miles, just out of warranty. Valves collided with the pistons, destroyed the head. Good times!

@waifuracer6516 2 жыл бұрын
What part of the US you lived in? The cracking head/turbo is mostly in hotter climates. I went through one 1.8T engine but it was because the previous owner didnt change the oil and it sludged up and killed the oil pump. The second engine i had for around 50k miles and it was faultless. Had some vac leaks but sorted that out and a dipstick tube that fell apart from age. All very easy and cheap fixes. I loved every minute owning it even with the first one loosing oil pressure which wasnt really the engines fault, more of the previous owners and the fact that I didn't notice

I adored my 1.8Ts, they sound outrageous with a big open cone filter. They're a lot of fun when tuned and in a nicely modified car, and parts are everywhere. A new engine can be had for less than £200 in the UK if you take it too far with yours (rods are the main weak point). Mine were exceptionally reliable, but if you don't take good care of them you will run into trouble. Regular oil changes are a must, I did it every 6 months.

As a tech in their hay day only one thing caused sludge. That is a pcv system failure. The valve goes bad (hidden inside a hose) and leaks boost into the crank case vent. Taking all the sludge from the crank case and turbo charging it into the oil pan. This also caused oil leaks. Because you are turbocharging the crank case. This was made doubly worse because owners refused to pay the labors to properly fix the system.

Enjoying my 1.8t Cupra, mk1 Leon's are the best looking ones with 1.8t imo ;) pushing 221hp atm with 336nm of torque and honestly I think that's enough to satisfy me, coulda went with a cupra R and get 225 stock but...I didn't lol. used to be equal with my mate's Type R when doing rolling pulls now I'm leaving him behind even when giving a lead. Engine head rebuilt in October so 5 months ago and semi-refurbished the gearbox too we'll see how reliable it lasts at 90k miles now. Drove to Belgium from Scotland and back last month which was 2,000 mile round trip no problem. Only issues I had with the car was timing belt got chewed as previous owner never replaced the bolt for the engine mount when he polybushed, they're single use bolts so it snapped when I reversed it and the threaded bit fucked the belt up. Then had Cam position sensor fail on me, £20 and 10 minutes later that was fixed. And finally used to get 2 engine codes due to the decat, that got taken care of when remapping as it would come back if I'd just erase it. Trouble free for now ;)

I've had 2 GTIs in the past both with 1.8t's. One was an 01 and the other was an 03 with the k03s turbo that made 180hp from the factory. Full intake + downpipe exhaust and a remap gave it in the ballpark of 200+ whp. When you have a gutted MK4 with that much power, there's not many cars that could keep up with it 0-100, but it did run out of steam in the top end. Crazy thing is that both were extremely high mileage motors and still ran like dreams, one was at 275000km and the other at 335000km
