I'd argue that this isn't ugly, it's just boxy, which was the styling norm in the 80's for most car manufacturers. However, I'd say it's boxier than its competition.

One of my favourite Audis. Have been driven it a few times years ago. Actually it's based on the Audi 100 (Typ 44, in the US 200) which was also the base for the 200 (US 5000) with it's beautiful 2.2 5cylinder and Quattro AWD. I was maybe 8 years old when my father picked me up with the 200. The 200 and V8 belong to my all time favourite Audis. DTM champions with the V8 (I have been to some races at that time) were Frank Biela and Hans-Joachim Stück a former F1 driver. Third driver was Rallye legend Walter Röhrl. This V8 sadly looks beaten up. In a good shape they go between $10,000 and $30,000 out here in Germany.

Having owned 3 of these, one 3.6 automatic, a 3.6 5-speed manual and a 4.2 6-speed manual, i can just say i LOVE them. Sleepers all day long, and the comfort is seriously good as well. The only let-down was the UFO brakes, but those got replaced on most of them anyways. also, the early cars had a GM climate control, that newer style is the same that the A4 would use when it came out in late -94.

The Audi sedans of that era were actually lauded as the most beautiful sedans in the world. They were on the cutting edge of style and innovation. The original Ford Taurus was inspired by the aerodynamic Audi sedans that pioneered all-around flush glass on their 100 / 5000 models. That car was arguably the test mule for VW’s future endeavors with Bentley and their own Phaeton.

I owned a white 1990 Audi quattro V8 in the early 2000s. The price hasn't changed much, picked mine up for about $1800. Super cool car but repairs ultimately will bleed you dry. Before autozone had it, I had to order CHF fluid from England due to a hydraulic leak that couldn't be repaired. They called it liquid gold for a reason. Worth every penny to show off the Audi phone to friends.

Well done that man for saving it from the crusher. Based on Type 44 100/200 or 5000 - they are built like tanks. I read on the net that a chap fell asleep in a 100CD 5 cyl and ran into a road-roller. Hit it so hard it tore the inlet manifold off! He walked away. Keep it, add a bit, change the ECU for aftermarket, clean it up - should be fun. Hoping to see more of it.

I sold Audis in PA in the mid 90's. We had a lightly used V8 (light green with grey leather) Guy pulls on the lot with a V8 and says "I want that car". I said "you have one already!" My mother had one of these. Beautiful, comfortable great driving car. Solid as steel ingot. It came with the phone. The car is almost one of a kind, and almost nobody knew what it was. Everyone thought it was one of the models with the 4 or 6 cylinder engine. The only one who could work on it was the Audi dealer. And any time you serviced it, you had to move the decimal point one point to the right. And you had to special order any parts that needed replacing. And that was over 10 years ago. I would hate to try and fix one now.

Know it well. We owned a '90 V8 quattro for years and it was a very good and reliable car. Sold around 2003 when another UrS4 took it's place. Also, in the U.S. you could only get the manual in '91 (if I remember correctly) and it was a five speed but they are rare as hens teeth. I've never seen a factory 4.2 manual stateside.

I still have one of these, a 1993 4.2L, I took care of all the maintenance when i bought it, doesn't look pretty but it has been super reliable surprisingly. Unbelievable in the snow since it is one of the first cars with a yaw sensor for the electronic locking centre differential, utilizes other sensors too, plus a factory Torsen rear differential. Surprised your V8 doesn't have the ABS defeat switch. Part of the starting issue may be worn out distributor cap and rotor of which there are 2, one of each cylinder head, the rotors are glued on making changing them out challenging so they get over looked. Change that auto trans fluid and filter too it's pretty basic Dexron/Mercon 3. I have a couple videos of my V8 on my channel including the measurements for the very rare transmission dipstick, these tend to have a plug instead of a proper dipstick for checking fluid level. Change your timing belt !!!! my V8 was purchased cheap since the T-belt came out in 4 pieces, thankfully it broke at idle and runs the oil pump so the oil pressure was low and the interference engine was rotating fast enough for any internal carnage. Lots of failure points on old luxury cars German or otherwise, so change all the fluids and check all rubber mounts (suspension/engine), change that fuel filter, lube your sunroof guides too. Good Luck!

Regarding the unlock/lock situation…the key did in fact originally have a power lock/unlock control. The little oval bubble in the B-pillar was the transponder. They did not work super well back then, but could be as simple as a battery replacement in the key fob.

I loved my 91 V8. I bought it used in 99 for around $10K with just about 100K miles on it. Mine was black on black, but I also tinted the windows and the rear taillights and side makers to murder the car out. That car was an awesome car for all four seasons. Winter AWD was great and it loved to sit at 90-100mph on the highway. Mine still had the phone which I activated for a short while when I was spending alot of time in the car. Some fun details you missed: the phone/armrest when all the way up allows for the rear passenger to use it; on below freezing days the door lock has a little heater that when you put the key in will instantly work to defrost a potentially frozen lock; the bose stereo as nice as it is had a propensity to have the rear speakers which are amplified catch fire or die. Yours is reaaalllly rough on the outside but parts of the body are aluminum so shouldn't rust. The car is styled after the 100/200 but if I remember correctly, they do not share much in the way of body or chassis architecture. For that cheap price I'd say keep it and clean it up as much as possible. And get those brakes fixed since I saw the warning light on for it!

@TFLclassics Great Video. Its a Great purchase! they are pretty solid cars to drive for the most part as long as they are maintained. The button on the key fob is for the central door locks it runs of RF signal like a remote you point it at the button that sits on the B pillar just about the door. It does have a max distance of about 10ft. As for the starting issues its most likely the Crank and or Cam position sensors are starting to fail. Also the ECU needs to read a certain RPM before the ecu turns the relay on for the fuel pumps to start, so you will need to make sure the battery is good.

I used to own two of these Audi V8's. I owned a 3.6 with the 4 speed auto and the 3.6 with the 5 speed manual. The 5 speed manual I enjoyed the best. The Audi V8 with the auto will be pricey to maintain, especially when the engine or transmission needs extensive service. Both cars are a bit too rare to keep long term because Audi didn't sell enough of them in the North American market. Spare parts and a technician that are familiar with this particular Audi will be hard to come by these days. The price you paid is still good, but I wouldn't invest too much money into it if you have major mechanical issues. Nice video content guys. I like the old stories of the Audi V8 quattros.

Audis were always bad ass cars, and that V8 must have been something up against the brand-new for '93 740i. Audi always differentiated itself with its own flavor of Germanic motoring, and that quattro system was a real game-changer. You couldn't get anything else like it in 1993 in that class. But, it's an Audi. It was breaking hearts and wallets starting about 26 years ago and it hasn't stopped.

Keep it. Enjoy it as it is until something very expensive goes wrong. Then sell it for what you paid for it. You might get a few months or a year out of it. I personally think it's a very handsome car for a late 80s design. To me, late 80s and early 90s Audis were the pinnacle of Audi design. Come to think of it, that goes for BMW, Mercedes, and Jaguar as well.

Cool car. I thought you could only get the 3.6 V8 with FWD.

The starting issue sounds like an ailing fuel pump that has trouble getting up to pressure. These are cool cars though.

How many of these are still around? Compared to same generation of Lexus LS400? Not many I'd guess

Had a 1998 A8. Loved it. Ate up freeway miles. Smooth, comfortable and excellent in the snow. Got rid of it because of to many electrical problems.

Nice V8. I would keep it, probably not put too much money into it, just to keep it drivable, clean it up and enjoy it.

I have the 1997 Audi cabriolet the same model as princess Diana The check system with the check button was called I’m ok it was how Audi branded the check system to compete with the bmw check system at the time

I love the idea of driving a late 80s early 90s Audi, I just don’t love the effort it would take to do it. Maybe some day when I’m doom scrolling marketplace my heart will win over my brain and I’ll click “is this available?” and just open my wallet.

Great car .. My biggest concern would be the automatic transmission.
