[animal resources, products I use and more: goherping.com] - When I ship people animals, I try to make sure they're all the right future owners. But sometimes it's just impossible to tell and people have buyer's remorse. This person wasn't willing to wait to send the snake back, and instead dumped the snake in one of those FedEx containers sitting out in the weather for anywhere from a few hours to multiple days.

I had a female BP who hid all the time and was fussy and her personality didnt fit what I wanted. She was kept in a rack the first 6m of her life and I had her in a fully glass enclosure and it was just a waste. I ended up trading her at an expo so a baby male (who I absolutely adore and people thought I was crazy for trading) and his personality is amazing. I wanted her to be happy so instead of having her unhappy shes now living the good life, and I now have a wonderful baby bp. Some people are just like that and want whats best for the snake. That other stuff is complete bs though he should be fined for leaving it there.

just wait on their side of the story for each time someone wants to return a pet. There are times where people realized there are incapable to take care of pets. It could be due to family reasons, the state laws, or other personal things like example (doing your research on animal care). When my dogs were in the mating season and accidentally birth like 10 years ago because we didn't spay or neuter the dogs. We have to find new homes for the puppies. One person that we gave away to claim she didn't like the puppy because of her personality being too hyper and the appearance is not what she wanted. Like she claim the puppy gets spooked easily and runs to her feet because the puppy was scared. Plus she being a real ass of telling us the puppy's teeth grew in wrong and it is not the kind of dog she wanted because the breed of dog is more for therapy/lap dogs. Those dogs aren't really trainable. So then she gave the puppy back to us and bought new dogs which is totally heartbreaking that she like threw away the puppy we gave in the trash. We had the puppy for a few months. My dogs welcomed the puppy back and found another family who know we can trust to take it in because they had two kids and it good for them. I recently talked with a 11-13 year old kid who had a starving fat tail gecko. They tried their best to feed it but couldn't get it to get any feeding response and kept getting weaker and weaker. It could be the kid could get the food that it likes because sometimes geckos can suddenly change food preference and they couldn't get it because they don't have to supplies for it or unable to get it in their area. Like it is not their fault for it happen and it was their first time pet owner too and done their research on care. There are times where they are unable to care for pets and those who want to take care but couldn't take up the responsibilities. So give it a bit until they can really have their side of the story on what happen but how this person went around this and wanting/reason get rid of the snake is really not the way to go about this without consulting and making sure the animal is safe.

I understand Willy's point on that. I have two snakes, then I bought a Leachianus gecko. I had the Leachy for a year and decided I didn't like his personality either. He hid most of the time, and didn't like being held. I mean, my snakes are like that too, but at least they like to peep their heads out while I'm in the room sometimes. I ended up selling him to a person who LOVES geckos and has a collection of them. In turn, I got a bearded dragon off of craigslist, and he ended up being the personality I clicked with. He's a great companion, and I don't think I could ever get rid of him ❤️
@kendramark1872
@kendramark1872 3 жыл бұрын
@@Que967 I also understand that, that's why I put personality in quotation marks. According to Alex, the ball python was easy to manage and the most docile ones he's ever had. Based on Willy's other actions, it's easy to assume that "personality" wasn't the real reason they returned the snake.

I remember in my snake research, while having a reactive snake (ie she thought me entering the enclosure meant food) I read that buying a snake hook, and teaching them a gentle double tap, will help them differentiate between handling and feeding time I got my hook, and we tested it out. Low and behold, my snake can now tell what I’m doing.

That literally upsets me so much when people accuse an animal of being hyper responsive or snappy/snippy and they’re literally so sweet. One of my schools teachers has a leopard gecko, a bearded dragon and a crestie. None of them are even living in minimal care requirements. However, the crestie is best taken care of so my main concerns are for the beardie and leo. Both of them look very malnourished and I know they’re malnourished because they literally are fed freeze dried worms and I don’t think they get any vitamins, calcium, or UVB. I don’t think either of their heating methods are up to par either and I personally believe their tanks are small and dirty. The beardie is on sand and the leos tank looks like it has never been cleaned. Leo also has multiple layers of stuck shed, missing claws, likely to get toe or tail rot soon if nothing changes, and pretty obvious MBD. It breaks my heart I can’t take them all but I have a leopard gecko myself so I’ve started a “save the little leo” mission and hopefully I’ll have the little girl home soon!! I chose to make her my first priority because she appears to be in the worse shape out of all of them and I, again, have a leo myself. So I know how to care for them more. But the teacher said that she’s mean and doesn’t handle well... I picked her up with no problems at all and she was just the most curious, sweetest little thing in the world. She was slipping everywhere due to not having good traction but she was just a joy to handle and I can’t wait to add her to my life permanently 🥰 Anyways, just realized I was kind of ranting haha. Anyone have any tips to get the shed off easier? I know soak baths and q-tips but what else can I do? And how can I make her as comfortable as possible with her having deformed MBD arms and many missing nails? I was planning to keep her tank very ‘flat’. Nothing that she can potentially climb too high and slip from and I was going to get super textured hides and stimulating decor. What else can I do?

I think I like the green wall.... People can be so crazy! We just rescued a red iguana. We weren't looking or "ready" for another lizard but we couldn't leave her where she was. She was surrendered at a pet store. Had been kept in a plastic tub. Burns all over, no spikes at all down his back. Tail gone and was just skin and bones! It was terrified and hiss lunge, Tail strike and bite anyone who came near him. My hubby knew he would be safe with me. The store gave it to him saying if you know she can care she can have it. Dooby came home and after about 5 weeks now he is strong fat fast and loves a snuggle. These animals don't have bad attitudes they have bad handlers who doesn't care enough to learn how to care for these babies. My son has since claimed Dooby. She is doing great! Hopefully your babies will find safe loving homes too! PRO TIP: as soon as you get an animal speak softly to them and tell them You are safe, you are loved, I won't let anything hurt you!" It's a mantra for yourself as well as the animal. Take responsibility for the love care and safety of your pet. What ever pet it is. Heck..... Say it to your kids too! That's all anything or anyone wants. Safety, Love, commitment. It's all of our God given right! 💖💖💖

I have a ball python. I got him less than a year old. At first he was freaked out because we were new and the house was new and he didn’t know us. Once I got him settled into the perfect tank with all the right stuff, he was a dream. He only ever hissed at me once in that first week, as we tried to figure out what his care style was, how to feed, etc. he was never aggressive, even if he was a shy little baby. Now he’s about to turn two next month and he loves being handled. I’m not going to say every ball python is like this, that none are skittish or aggressive, but I doubt that that guy actually cared about the snake. Based on the emails he cared about his ego more. I think if he’d taken the time for the animal to adjust it would’ve been fine but obviously silly Willy here couldn’t wait for anything or anyone

I'm so glad both snake are safe and sound. Hopefully they'll find their forever loving home. I too adopted two 'normal' males from someone who couldn't take care of them and I'm so glad I did. They were tagged as 'very aggressive', but they're the sweetest things ever and love cuddles, never defensive to me or strike. We need more people like you who educate people about how to take care of animals, any animal. Thank you for your effort!

What makes you different is that you have a soul, you care about what happens to the animals that come through you! You should be proud that your company has such a high quality vision and mission statement. At the same time don’t let people take advantage of you, their must be some kind of fine for changing your mind after a certain cool off period (set number of days), and certainly for putting the animal in danger like good old Willy did.

Willy was most likely lunging in front of it in its enclosure and that's what makes them nervous and want to strike. You calmly pick the up from behind. Animals including reptiles can sense what you are feeling. If you are calm they are calm. If you are nervous they are also nervous.

Poor handling often leads to reactive snakes. If they can feel a person being twitchy or see it, it can make them defensive because they might see it as a wary predator thinking about whether or not it's a safe snack to eat. I also believe most animals can tell the difference between a pet owner that cares for their animals and someone who just wants a reptile because it's "cool". Even with my shaky hands because I have really bad arthritis my boy is always an angel. He's never gotten defensive, never bit at me, never hissed at me, or anyone else for that matter, despite startling himself on the regular (he's a derpy derp, but I love him dearly for it), but I've never had an issue with him in the 7 months I've had him. He's now 10 months old and despite hearing baby ball pythons can be a bit nippy, he's been chill since he arrived at my doorstep, and the fed ex guy was very careful carrying him up the stairs and made sure not to shake the box or anything, so I greatly appreciated that guy. He's a happy healthy noodle, and he's growing so fast it's insane. It's been quite the fun journey though and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. I named him Ouroboros before I even bought him online. Certain people just shouldn't be allowed to have animals, and this is a prime example of one of those people. Please, PLEASE, Always do your research, always make sure you have the time to spend giving the animal proper care, proper socialization, and a proper home to live in. I spend between 45 minutes to 1+1/2 hours on average every time I get him out for handling. He's not head shy, he loves chin rubs, and there's been a couple times he's just napped in my hands or lap for up to 3+ hours. If you take proper care and treat them with due respect, you'll often find you'll get the same in return from your pet. Of course there may be some niche cases where that isn't the case, but a majority of the time, that will ring true. Just please don't try to give a home to an animal that you aren't sure you can properly provide.

European person here. I know sending animalls in the mail is very common in the States (I know newly hatched chicks are mailed as well) but I am frankly amazed at the practise every time I hear of it. Where I live, we usually drive all the way up to where the animal is to collect it, or agree to meet at an expo or the seller might have their own courier. Sometimes, feeder animals like bugs get sent in the mail but that's it. The two main reasons for this, as far as I am concerned, are that I don't know what happens to the animal in the mail, it could be subjected to rough handling or left in some less than fantastic place overnight, (no matter how many stickers about careful handling you put on), and I want to meet an animal in person before I buy it. I am not judging or anything, I know your country is large and to drive from one side to the other is quite the road trip. Just trying to get you to consider that for your new bff a roadtrip might be worth while. Anyway, keep enjoying this great hobby and keep up the good work.

Things like this make me so happy that you do as much checking as you can. We're getting our first ball python in the next week or so, after about 14 years of wanting one, and the shop we chose won't let anyone take an animal home without pictures of the setup, stats, etc. I've been watching every reputable video I can get my hands on in preparation. We only didn't take on a rescue because I am nervous, due to intense neurological pain responses, about being bitten. This little guy we went to see for my wife's birthday, and he snuggled up under our hair, and wasn't head shy at all... despite being in blue. Once I'm more used to handling a snake, and as he gets bigger, we're hoping to get some rescues, once we've a year or two of good husbandry under our belt.

that poor sweet little guy. no matter how hard you try some people dont get it through their thick heads that its a commitment you make to that snake from the first day it comes into your care, its your responsibility to meet its needs and one you will have for 20 years or so depending on the snake. there is no 'take backsies'. It should be extremely rare an owner needs help and cannot look after their best slithery friend anymore. idgi, the guilt I feel even if I think my snake has had a hard time feeding/ handling. To think my black pastel could be left in a drop box! Id go insane. I completely understand breeders being super pedantic when selling rescues/new clutches. Thankyou GH for being so patient and caring for those gorgeous animals.

This pissed me off that poor baby. I got my pastel ball python when I was 14. She is now almost 9 years old, she traveled on a semi with my dad to get from NJ to TN. That same snake is still with me, she is healthy and getting big. she just went from small rat to medium :) some people just don't deserve snakes the person that had her was a breeder, but had her in a container that was way to small so it delayed her growth sadly. She is by far the best snake ever and my dad is always trying to steal her lol. He said when she was on the truck with him he loved it.
