Looks like perfect pasture for the hogs. When i was a kid 50 years ago my dad pastured hogs much the same way as your doing. Raised some good pork too. We had a couple of milk cows and always an excess of milk supply so what was left over the hogs would get. Brings back good memories thanks Troy.

Just a little FYI- Was watching "Homestead Rescue" and they had to move and load a large hog, they built a 4 sided box , open on the top and bottom. The box was just big enough for the hog to fit into and with handles on the front and rear, they just walked the hog to the desired location. Looked easy.

I'll be watching to see how you keep in the boars with sows in heat so close. Have the sow with them may help.

In my experience having a bore the electric hot wire wasn’t enough to keep the bar from getting to the sows I had to build a very substantial fence and a hot wire to keep the boar away from the sows

Your borrow could have a hernia, check it out carefully before you cut again. Have lost borrows with hernias in the past. Nice operation.

Maybe worth renting a tracked bobcat, for a few days, with a HD brush hog attachment to clear multiple paths for your hot wires. And a blade to smooth out the rises and fill in the low spots?

For instance. You could completely wall it in with straw bales for insulation.Cover that with plastic to retain the insulation value as long as possible. Probably impractical. But it gives a start for the ideas. Personally, I think I'd just be buying sheet foam insulation a bit at a time, as can be afforded, and be adding it in layers to the outside of the building.

Troy what are you seeing growing in the heavy impacted areas ,? Meaning the seed bank.

If left alone, I am seeing switch grass take off. When I reseed a pasture mix, it helps keep the switch grass controlled.

When you think about putting pigs on land that you had shot clays over be careful. All the boxes of clays I ever unloaded at the gun club carried a warning that they were poison to livestock, pigs were specifically mentioned. These were the "normal" asphalt-based clays, not the biodegradable type.

Maybe you should do an extensive video about the walkin? See if maybe some of your watchers might have some ideas about how to make it more economic?

Be careful it’s not a scrotal hernia. If there is a scab there I bet he’s been castrated. Especially where it’s lower than normal. I guess just be careful and be prepared to sew it back up if guts start falling out

Troy I have a sow that was showing milk day before yesterday and still no babies yet! no show but swelling and nesting! Do you think it could be a problem? Thanks!!
@RedToolHouse
@RedToolHouse 4 жыл бұрын
No, I would not worry yet. If she is nesting and swollen it will be very soon. Check up on her regularly but will most likely be at night.

That's likely a cut where he was castrated. We castrate low on the "bag" and the still shot looks like where the scar would be.
@RedToolHouse
@RedToolHouse 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely more than just a scar. He has a mass under the skin that can be moved like a testicle. I will know more this weekend when I can inspect him better.

I have heard that lately but have had pigs on a pasture with busted clays for years. Haven't seen any issues.

I would rather be thought dumb than open my mouth n remove the doubt so if I may a question or what my brain feeds on. Here in alaska we have musket just about anywhere glaciers used to be. Now our mountains even have spots of it on open area. Go down to its bottom which is likely thirty feet or more is rock or gravel seems and it is good material just like that rock I seen in the video. Do you have layers of ground like that there? No one knows how deep the mud goes in any area if not mistaken or if even reachable at any one spot without fancy expensive equipment that the government can afford. So.... are there real gravel pits in Virginia? Is it good road making stuff or just that shale that when it meets water, it is a blue clay that would make Hoover dam?
