Another alternative is to start with the 4 cards pre-flipped over before you begin the trick. You can do some false shuffles in the start. This eliminates any sleight of hand, but it doesn’t allow the spectator to shuffle. I prefer the more impromptu method, but either looks the exact same for the spectator.
