@@buildfromsketch8102 Here’s a crazy fact. When my ex and I switched from individual touring bikes to a tandem, our average touring speed on the flat increased by 50%! Tandems are so quick that a few drive efficiency losses won’t matter that much. 💪🏻
@Cyclingabout4 ай бұрын
@@sempi8159 My best estimate puts the drive efficiency of this tandem at 86.9% average across 18 gears (200W power output, 60RPM). It jumps up to 88.7% if you run the Pinion P1.18 with two belts instead of three. 👍

Wouldn't it be better if the tandem cranks don't have to be in sync, with additional freewheels? So either one can pedal and the other doesn't have to pedal at the same time?
@ericpmoss4 ай бұрын
It's a good question -- people are not electric motors, and some have more slow twitch muscle or fast twitch, not to mention one rider being more tired. Saving a few percent mechanically but giving up many percent due to rider mismatch doesn't seem optimal.

Out-of-phase placement could have 4 possible orientations. Front, Right at 12, and then Rear, Right at 3 or 9. Front, Right at 12, and then Rear, Left at 3 or 9.

I wonder why the stoker crankset doesn't drive the left side of the gearbox on the Comotion. Front and back would be spinning the same shaft, would be in sync, but you wouldn't be putting all the power through the belt from the front to gearbox.
@Cyclingabout4 ай бұрын
You could definitely hook it up that way! I suspect there isn't the appropriate length belt available to make it happen.
@Daniel-rr8ih4 ай бұрын
Expensive, but possibly cool solution: Two pinion gearboxes. One for each rider. The output sprockets would be linked. This way each rider can shift independently and pedal at their own cadence. Or would it be unstable to ride if you don't have synced cranks?

I wish Brompton would have a belt drive system, I think now they might be the only manufacturer that doesn’t have a belt drive in their range , we all know that belt drive systems are cleaner with no maintenance needed yet Brompton still living in the past.
@The1trueDave4 ай бұрын
Just a theory: Bromptons (even SS/ IGH ones) need a chain tensioner to take up the slack created when folding, because the frame pivot is not concentric with the BB axle. I suspect belt drive tensioners might not be able to take up as much slack as chain drive ones which are derived from derailleurs, not because of any physical limitation but simply because they never had to. Maybe Brompton are designing their own tensioner in-house right now... or maybe they decided it wasn't worth the investment?
@Cyclingabout4 ай бұрын
While Brompton don't make belt drive bikes, the aftermarket does! Kinetics UK build belt drive compatible Brompton rear triangles and special belt tensioners. Their system folds just like a chain drive Brompton!
