A great video that shows some real craftsmanship. It makes me wonder what watches Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy and Dennis Nilsen wore? Was Zodiac’s customer database central to the manhunt all those years ago? Interesting and unusual questions to ponder after watching a restoration video.

Wow what a treat because, I own that watch and never expected to see a repair video on it. Mine is manual wind and probably 10 years older with a dark copper face. Shocking how they get seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month and moon phase all in that little space. More shocking to see you pull it apart and put it back together again. Well done sir. Really made my day! ✌️

I also was very interesting in the works for all the complications. I assume it would be rather pricey, because even the valjoux with all these movements cost a good sum more than their base 7750.

Finally, a watch with a moon phase: thank you so much. Most people will not have realized this, but shortly before and then at full moon many people get really, really weird. You can see and hear this e.g. in car drivers honking their way through traffic or - even worse - in the following road rage. Or people just acting aggressively. Because of this, I have always felt that a moon calendar is absolutely essential in a watch. However, very few of our watch specialists on KZbin seem to see/know this. A watch like this can tell time to some extent, but more importantly, warn you if the "LUNATICS" are out there - just check it! The reference to the brilliant Zodiac killer movie has also been greatly appreciated here - thank you again.

Thanks for that! The month disc is actually only manually set, no automatic switch over at 31 to 1. This isn't as crazy as it might seem, given that even in watches that do switch the month over at the 31st still needs to be manually corrected 5 out of 12 months...

Once again, an awesome display of your talents. So glad to see you removed the cap jewels before it went through the ultrasonic then oiled them properly seemingly effortlessly. They can be a pain in the neck sometimes and its so easy to try to cheat and not remove them. So many people just assume the Ultrasonic will clean them properly without disassembling them, then oil through the hole jewel with an automatic oiler.. Grrrr I hate that. The one thing you MUST do is get those hole jewels and cap jewels sparkling clean and the only way to do that is to disassemble them..

I wish I had seen this before I took my grandfathers Polerouter apart, had a screw from the microrotor under the balance wheel. I didn't see it and eventually had to take it to get it serviced, would have been an easy fix if I had spotted it but always a good idea to keep your watches serviced, especially ones like that from family that mean a lot. Unfortunately I scratched a bridge working on it and I am still upset about it. Bugs me to this day.

Hello Nef, thanks for watching! It is indeed a very common issue, and when you open a watch and see an empty screwhole, there's a good chance that screw has come loose and is blocking something. And keep those screwdrivers sharpened! 😉

Thanks for yet another great video, Stian! The sexy slow-mo of the caseback sliiiiding into the cleaning solution is a very nice addition to you increasing cinematic skillset. With epilame on the pallet stones and escape wheel, do you let the watch run for a period of time before applying lubrication to the exit stone? I read somewhere a dry run period strips the epilame from the contact points to create a patch for the lube to sit. Thanks again!!

Great video Stian but I was waiting for the part where you super glue the screw back together! Just curious, I've always wondered where you get replacement screws for vintage watches? Are they common sizes like you find at the (watch) hardware store or are they proprietary to each manufacturer/watch? I remember Zodiac watches well as my first good watch, back in the 70's was a Zodiac Sea Chron that I bought at the military exchange store. They were common, especially the Seawolfs. Still have that watch! That's a nice looking watch you have there, thanks for sharing!

Thanks Randy! I think I learnt from the super glue incident that I need to make sure my jokes are not getting anyone into trouble! 😂 But I have a couple of videos coming up where a similar level of black magic is required... Very cool that you still have your Sea Chron, they are quite rare nowadays and very collectible. It's probably worth 30-40 times more now than when you bought it!

I was just going to remark that this must have been an entry in the tiniest screw contest and then.... you beat me to it. You said that the month disc doesn't change automatically. Is that common for this movement or a quirk? The sad thing about vintage watches, for me, is that there are so many amazing examples out there, and they are usually pretty affordable, but just slightly out of the realm of being cheap enough to make them a more regular addition to my collection. I'll have to reconsider my buying habits. :)
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Clay, great minds think alike! 😂 It wasn't uncommon for the month disc to be set manually and it's actually not as crazy as it sounds. Even if the month turns automatically you will still have to set it manually five out of the twelve months, and there if of course added complexity to make the month disc turn every 31st day. And yes, it's a slippery slope buying vintage watches... but as long as your wife doesn't know about it, you're golden.

I’m wondering if the moon phase shifter is geared to lunar time ? 13 months versus 12 calendar months? Interested to hear from you. Brilliant video, thanks
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, thanks for watching! Moon phase complications are generally quite simple, with 59 teeth which are moved one day at a time, and the disc itself having two identical halves. That leads to the moon phase display being completed in 29.5 days, which is a very close approximation to the moon's actual orbit of 29 days, 12 hours and 44 minutes. This is an accuracy that leads to an error of one day off about every three years, which is good enough for most! Loved you in The Sting btw 😁

Thanks Dominick! It was actually quite common to have to manually change the month. This isn't really as strange as it might sound like, given that you have to do so five out of the twelve months anyway, unless you have an actual perpetual calendar watch.

@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Gergely, thanks for watching! The calendar plate has a brushed finish that might make it seem more scratched than it actually is. There are for sure some scratches on it, and that's probably related to all the screws, which someone's screw driver has slipped on and marked the plate. Shows the importance of dressing one's screwdrivers!

@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Geoff, thanks for that! The dial indeed is labelled T Swiss, indicating the lume is Tritium. Manufacturers did this to ensure buyers that the dial did not have Radium, given the dangers that had become known about Radium. The dial has lume dots at the outer end of the hour markers, but the lume has degraded and darkened quite a bit so it isn't really all that visible. The same goes for the hands, they are also lume-filled but quite dark and degraded.

Another great video with interesting history and banter. This is an attractive watch with desirable complications. There are a few of them on eBay currently seeing for between $200-$400. But as it's only a 33mm case it would look too small on my wrist. I have a current 40mm Longines with similar complications I wear often in my rotation.
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve! It's a wonderful watch indeed. I think you might be looking at a slightly different model then, this one is 34mm, 42mm lug to lug, so it wears very nicely. They will go for about $1500 even on eBay when in good condition. If you see one for $200-400 you should snap it up right away (or better yet, tell me where they are) 😉 40mm is certainly a bit more in line with today's fashion, and Longines makes some fantastic pieces. Even though they don't make their own movements anymore, they have managed to maintain much of their design language from way back when, and that's really nice to see.

Beautiful watch and movement. Can I ask - is there any cheat to know where each wheel (cog) goes and in which order? I always have trouble with this (normally take lots of pictures)
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Matt, taking a lot of pictures is a very good thing 👍 Sometimes it can be difficult to separate between the wheels even for experience watchmakers, so don't feel bad about that :) In general, the wheels will get smaller ad lighter towards the balance wheel, with smaller pivots, but a couple of the wheels can still look very similar. The most important thing is to be very careful when trying the wheels if you're unsure which one fits where, so you don't break or damage anything.

I wasn't sure, but it sounded like you equated "Most popular watch in 3/4 of the world" with New Zealand, where I live. I'm afraid that is too cryptic for me. I don't recall Zodiac being held in special regard here.
@VintageWatchServices

I don't quite remember exactly what I said, but that slogan was based on the Zodiac Sea Wolf being a very popular diver's watch, as the sea covers about 3/4 of the world :)

Great video ! It happens that I own the exact same watch (though in stainless steel rather than gold plated), which suddenly stopped ! And guess what the movement screw had ended into the balance wheel ! Regarding the winding, interestingly enough my watch is also quite hard to wind, so it seems that these 2 issues are quite common on Zodiac's Triple calendars. Did your fix on the crown tube (small polishing + silicone) work well ? Is the watch now easier to wind ? I will definitely keep this video in my favourites to watch it again the day it goes to service ! Thanks again !
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Cleaning/polishing the crown tube and a touch of silicone does help indeed, but heavy winding is very common on vintage watches, as there simply is a bit of wear in the automatic works. For an automatic watch it is always better to let it wind through the automatic works rather than with the crown 👍
@montres1

@@VintageWatchServices Good to know thanks, I tend to privilege the crown winding particularly when I alternate watches and re-put it on my wrist. I will avoid it from now on !

Hello Vintage Watch Service , got a problem and maybe you can give me an advice that helps me out . I got a Tissot P50 Automatic (made somewhere around 2000) and it doesn't wind up anymore , the problem is that can't open the case that suposed to open with a knife but I'm not sure because I have not seen such slots before on any other watch . Is there any tool or trick to open the case I don't wanna ruin it.
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Thomas, thanks for watching and for your question! I've never worked on the P50 myself but from the pictures I've seen it looks like a standard snap-on case back. It seems to have a couple of big grooves you can put your case opening tool into and pry it open with. If you search for Tissot P50 on KZbin you should find some videos where they open it up. In general a watch will always give you a clue on how it should be opened. If it has some type of notches around the rim it's a screw-down, if there is a crack between the case back and the case it is a snap-on.

Hello @Vintage Watch Services here is an update to my watch ...first I was wrong because of my bad eyes I couldn't see the very small letters on the dial ...so it is a Tissot PR50 automatic , and I bought tools for the case and I'm pretty sure by now that these slots are made for a special tool because I tried everything but it won't budge at all ... I don't know where I go from here but I don't wanna give up on it because I love that thing ... my last hope is a neighbour said he knows a good shop they know personaly and maybe they can help me out ...I shall see ! I'm still very grateful because you where the only one who answered me so big thanks to you mate ! Have a good one !!!

I want this watch!!! Oh and being a guy who actually does dive ( reason for my Rolex Deep-Sea which is over kill obviously ) and I have well let's not talk about the second field for a Zodiac Sea Wolf which btw I personally didn't care for your sense of humor ( humour) on that one to be honest . Sorry my military history isn't something I find humorous and I am still trying to come to grips with it all.. But to remain civil and try and throw some humor back , my wife never does the dishes. The dishwasher does. But ny wife does make sure they are all rinsed clean. And we do obey... I actually own a Sea Wolf which btw isn't a great dive watch. Zodiac really kinda sucks since Fossil took them over. I however do also own a Desert Hawk ( which I like ) even though it is a quartz. I own a a Zodiac Calame and a limited edition all black Oceanaire which is controversial when it comes to the origins of the movement. I have a old Sea Wolf which is no longer running and I do not care. I hate that watch. But the watch you are working on is awesome!!!! I would love to have that watch!

@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
The case is gold plated, and polishing it is quite risky. It's also in original and very fine condition, and in general you want to preserve originality as much as possible for vintage watches. That makes them both more valuable and more attractive to most vintage collectors.

@@VintageWatchServices Ok that makes sense but I have seen other builders with very old watches polish the case on KZbin . i think its like old cars ,one restorer will take the original paint and buff it out and wax it to preserve it and another will shoot a clear over it and another will leave it alone and just clean it. My father actually had a Zodiac Astrographic. Very gothic looking watch and ran surprisingly poorly. The other odd thing is the bracelet was absolutely atrocious. For some reason the links would not fold under each other when unclasp, so when placing it on the desk it would have to be sideways, and was ridiculously stiff. Ended up selling it. For as cool as the clear disc seconds "hand" is, it only had a 2892 in it, so not worth keeping around. I've very surprised at the style of this one as it neither matches the Astrographic nor other Zodiacs that are readily available around the internet. Oh, I should add that it's also quite nicer.
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
That's sad to hear, was it a new watch? The original would not have had a 2892 inside it, and Zodiac made very high quality watches back in the day.

-3-+1 on a vintage complication WOW. I’m looking for a Zodiac!!!!👍 You have a fun approach to this. Are there any watches you know of that have that moon phase and >100m water resistance esp Zodiac. Blancpain does a Fiffty Fathoms Bathyscaphe with this complication however it is well out of my price range.
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Eddie! And yes, this is a real beauty :) Moonphase watches are in general dress watches -> dress watches are worn with nice clothes-> nice clothes generally aren't suitable for diving 😁 So a 10ATM+ water resistance watch that also has moonphase is a bit of a collision between purposes. This holds true for vintage watches, but nowadays the machining accuracy is higher than it was half a century ago, so for modern watches it's not uncommon to find a 10ATM+ dress watch.

Hello Clive, thanks for watching! I think that's a bit of an urban myth, their logo has been basically unchanged since the beginning. Thanks Doug! When you see a watch has two reverser wheels, it's pretty much by definition bi-directional.
