One of their best. "By the way, which one's Pink"? was an actual question the music executives asked the band, assuming it was the singer's name; that's how out of touch the business was. It was all gravy to them. The album should really, like all PF, be listened to from beginning to end. Like the ole' days of vinyl. That's what albums were for. yep....even back when I was younger that line always made me laugh....like, 'how in the world do the record label people not know their names?'...well now of course I understand why, because all those execs are concerned about is how much money can they make off of crushing their signed talent...but yea, that line says so very much in just six simple words.... wonderful. Welcome To The Machine is an extension to the ongoing saga of 'the adventures of dealing with your label people' I believe....

I agree that they should listen to the album, up to a point. I heard the greatest album ever, Dark Side of the Moon, with the songs here and there. I liked it so much, I got Wish You Were Here when it came out. Wish You Were Here is a slow-moving album. It took a while for the individual songs to grow on me and for me to love the album. Dark Side of the Moon, I would have loved it straight through from the beginning, but I didn't hear it until after WYWH.

Roy Harper is the singer on this. Long time friend of the band, also good friends with Led Zep. Roy was a classic folk troubadour in the 70's, with albums like the classic Stormcock. I saw Roy once at Stonehenge free festival when it was still allowed. He was the most stoned performer I've ever seen, but was mesmerising. Hat's Off To Harper on Zep 3 is also about Roy.

I saw a David Gilmour solo show in early 80s and he brought Roy out to play with him! Us stoners were in awe! ("One of those days in England..."). Can't recall what they played but it's probably online somewhere.

The line, "We call it riding the gravy train" is held for such a long time to emphasize the fact that these companies will go as long as possible to squeeze every last cent out of their clients.” Awesome song !❤️

So, the band members haven't enjoyed the tens of millions of dollars each of the main guys have earned. Without that gravy train this album would never have existed and we would have yet another album about Roger's daddy to pick and muddle through. To every success EVER, from the start of time, regardless of economic plan it is coveted by the masses and the drive to make and sell more has always existed. I love the album, I love the ideas, but everything in this world has always required "MORE", "BETTER" & "FASTER" and it will never go away. To think, without that push for all of that, we would still be having to attend the symphony or opera for our music and viewing pleasures. Just my measley two cents on the thought.

Only Pink Floyd can make a song be pulled into a radio , then hear the station being changed to an acoustic guitar, then play along into the next song. The whole album is a masterpiece and part of a run of albums in the 70s that no band has equalled. Genuises Cool reaction

I was 15 years old in 1970. Every time you turned on the radio there was a new sound coming out. Songs that sounded like no songs before them. Each one seemingly different and better than the last. Imagine the power of these songs Never being heard by anyone before and then boom.

Gilmour's guitar solo at the end of the song seems to segue into the sound of an old radio, which he continues and seamlessly builds to "Wish You Were Here", which again begins with the sound of an old radio... That's the problem with listening to individual songs on some Pink Floyd albums. These are so-called concept albums, where individual songs flow into one another, not only musically but thematically. Therefore, it is ideal to listen to these albums from beginning to end. The song was originally supposed to be sung by Roger Waters, but after he strained his voice during "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", it was guested by Roy Harper, who was recording his album "HQ" in the next studio at the time. Harper is a folk singer and guitarist who has worked with Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, among others. David Gilmour declined to sing this song. It turned out to be an excellent song - and thanks for that!

This song was a bitter angry reckoning with the record industry: as soon as the managers see that you're successful, they offer you a big fat cigar, smear honey around your beard and try to wring you out like a wet cleaning rag. If the artist dies (drugs or the loss of creativity or whatever), they don't give a damn - as long as the cash register is right: Welcome to the machine ... (the song before; so "Welcome to the money-printing machine of the music industry, take a seat, have a cigar... make us (the managers) all rich, then you'll get a small piece of the big cake - or have another cigar..." Back then you put on the vinyl and cranked the amp to the max: you felt the bass in your whole body and the guitar kind of exploded in your head... Whether your parents were banging on your door or the neighbors were protesting - you were completely immersed in this album, you absorbed every note, every word of the lyrics like a sponge.

Pretty sure that synth sound you ask about that starts at 0:56 is made with a Moog Minimoog synthesizer. I think it's the same keyboard that they used for the keyboard solo in Pink Floyd's song "Welcome To Machine."

You discovered one of the best syncopated intros in modern music, my cousin. Pink Floyd were made up of an eclectic mix of arts, architecture, and technology students at first, but had a firm grounding in music, as most British educated kids did back then. So they knew of Gershwin and his I Got Rhythm ideas. You might try to react to one of the original recordings of Gershwin sometime.

It's highly likely that not only did Gilmour do the guitar parts but also the bass on the recording, it's no secret but Gilmour actually plays bass on about half of Floyd's recordings because it was easier than hanging around waiting for Roger to get on with it or as with Hey You Roger couldn't get on with the fretless bass on that track.

By far one of my favorites. Comes from my favorite album they have. I remember as a kid in the 90’s my dad telling me the story behind all their songs but this one specifically. Then listening to him belt it out and feeling it. Grew on me quick! Best line is still “oh by the way, which ones Pink?”

There's an alternative version where Roy Harper isn't singing, think it was Roger Waters, but they thought it didn't sound right, so they ended up getting him in instead. Nailed it.

When they were recording the Wish You Were Here album they started recording this song with Waters singing but David Gilmour didn't like the way it came out. Roy Harper happened to be recording in the same studio they were at the time, so Gilmour asked him to come give it a try and ended up liking the way it sounded better than Waters but Waters being the ego maniac he is was convinced he could get it right. Eventually the rest of the band agreed to go with the Harper lead version.

Ooh what a party! I think this is an often overlooked track. When I only had the vinyl, it was just natural to play the album in two parts. Nowadays people are not even aware albums were produced that way. Now albums are often approached as a collection of loose tracks. This is such a shame. The fat groove of this track is just awesome.Together with the cynical tone it's such fun.

Right! And THEY call it riding the gravy train, because while the band is working putting out albums and doing concert tours, they (record company) count the money they make (for doing nothing!) BTW, apparently, in the early days, Pink Floyd was actually asked which band member was Pink. Just to show how little the people who dealt with them, actually knew about them. But boy, did they want a cut! This song is a perfect example of why Pink Floyd's concept albums should be listened from first to last track, in order, uninterrupted, except for the break between side 1 and 2 of course. This song ends by suddenly becoming a song on the radio, then you actually hear the radio dial spin through a couple/few stations, stop on one, a line is spoken, and bang, into the next song. Which kind of sounds like it is on a radio, to start with anyway.

The meaning of the lyrics is pretty transparent. The record label executive doesn't care about music as an art form, he only cares about maximizing profit. The line, "Everybody else is just green...", means other record labels are jealous, "green with envy" about the sales generated by the band ("Have you seen the chart?"). This whole album, "Wish You Were Here", is a tribute to founding member Syd Barrett and also an indictment against the exploitative practices of the music industry.

Old Pink Floyd fan here from the early 70s. Followed them all my life. In much sense this was the last album where their music flow. Animal and The Wall are more dramatic and filled with more breaks and sudden changes. Roger Waters was so dominant in the songwriting after this album that finally ended with their less acclaimed album Final Cut (that in much was Roger Waters first solo album though under the name of Pink Floyd) before the break up whereafter the three others moved back the more atmospheric songwriting. At least as I see it. Just immerse yourself in Pink Floyd, listen to the albums from start to end
