HAPPY FESTAG, SIMON!! I finished A Brief History of Time recently, though not for the first time. I’m trying to get myself to finish another Hawking book (I have way too many books to read at the moment) because something about him just hums inside of me. My friends who like physics, especially those on an undergrad/grad level, seem to have found joy in putting down Hawking’s work because it’s not a textbook. They serve different purposes, *obviously* , and I’m hardly reading it to do fancy equations. It’s about understanding and seeing beauty.
@72mazhar6 жыл бұрын
The first physics book I've ever read was Brian Greene's Elegant Unverse. It was a milestone for me in physics because it introduced the most astounding and beautiful concepts of physics which are theory of relativity and quantum mechanics also most importantly string theory. It was hard to grasp the concepts at first but with time and more research I had a really good basis in physics.

I feel like videos are a real contender for best introduction to physics. With all the quality content on KZbin you can learn concepts fairly easily and if you're willing to dig deeper you can learn the math at least as well as high school. I haven't been to college yet so I can't speak on that but I am aware of MIT open courseware which seems like it would be just fine to learn physics from.

I read this at age ten too Simon! No joke. Except I read it because I had and still do have an obsession with CERN. I wish one day to work there and fulfill my dream of becoming an actual theoretical physicist is the world's largest research organisation and largest particle accelerator facility in the world. However, the first scientific book I ever read, and what got ME into science, was Quantum Physics Cannot Hurt You by Marcus Chown. Never have I ever been so indulged in such a book, that I read all 200 pages of it in one day. I also recently reread this childhood book, and I had almost the exact same phenomenon with this as you had with Hawking's book. I would highly recommend it, 9.5/10 (only because I couldn't love it more)!

For me it was Bryson's Short History of Nearly Everything. All of the book is fascinating and very readable. The geology drags on a bit though happy festag

This reminds me (partly becuse of you art analogy) I went back to Uni to do an art degree (then an MA) off the back of 'leisure' courses. I did not have the backing of colour theory and a patchy art history knowledge. I saw an art documentary that featured Charlene by Robert Rauschenberg. This painting/collage/scuplture ignited my imagination. And I did my first solo presentation on it in my second term. Years later and just post MA I went to a Rauschenbergh retrospective and halfway through I turned a corner and saw it and I squeaked! I fangirled over a painting! But it was seeing what was possible that humour was allowed that scale with tiny detail was good that colour was fun! And the artist never stopped experimenting and it is a shame he died just before the social media explosion as he would have certainly harnessed. I believe in a link between science, technology and art and so did Rauschenbergh.

I bought this book nine months ago and I really like the way he explains each topic , not too detailed but clear. Especially the part where he talks about the collapsing of stars is incredible to me and this book really gives me the will to become a physicist because of it's variety of topics and so on. What I also find interesting is the end where he talks about the many scientists he mentioned , just like einstein , galilei etc., And you can also find out about their lives and problems . I , for example, never knew that newton was so spiteful.

I'd say 6 easy pieces is probably better as an introduction, as it explains the very basics, however most people tend to shut a book at the first sight of an equation, albeit simple and well explained ones. A brief History of time is still very good though, taking you through chronologically physics from the very beginning and having more worded explanations without the equations, which unfortunately I see as a Downside, but not a flaw to the book itself.
@veloxlupus3036 жыл бұрын
Never really got into popular science books, especially physics ones. But that’s mainly cause I always find them too basic, covering material that I already know, and know to a much better depth than the book can provide.
