I think the original Star Wars novel had a lot to do with the China discrepancies. The novel (George Lucas was the credited writer, though Alan Dean Foster is said to have written it) hinted at a Luke-Leia romance which became a focus of Foster's 1978 sequel "Splinter Of A Mind's Eye."

The galactic republic was always part of star wars. In fact the first line is ripped from pre editted title crawl of a new hope. That line was cut out though because when george lucas showed the movie to his friends, they thought it was too much exposition. A great video to watch is how star wars was saved in the edit

Luke being Blue 5 instead of Red 5 wasn't a change for the Chinese market. He's actually Blue 5 in the script and the novelization, which is what I'm guessing they based this on. It was changed to red in the movie because blue stuff turned black against the blue screens they were using. If you watch the non-Special Editions, you can see it happen to R2 a lot.

I have a feeling that this adaptation was based on the film novelization, which was based on an earlier script where Red Squadron was Blue Squadron (which was changed due to the color blue not working well with blue screen effects) and had several illusions to Earth creatures, such as dinosaurs and pandas.

In the American comic adaptation, and in the novelization, Luke was Blue 5. But in the 70s and 80s, they used blue screen instead of green screen. So the blue stripes on Luke's fighter would have either shown the Death Star or stars, depending on which way you were looking.

The artists definitely got a hold of McQuarrie's concept art, because Boba Fett's armor was in fact the early Stormtrooper armor, which was later somewhat retconned in the prequels as Stormtrooper armor being based off of Clone Trooper armor, which in turn was based off of Mandalorian armor. As for Chimp-bacca, McQuarrie originally envisioned Chewie as being more primate-like, than the Wookiee we see onscreen. Also, the comic, despite being mistranslated, is surprisingly far better than the Engrish we see today, and all this stuff had to be done under the oppression of Mao, which is quite miraculous.

Back in the day, in Italy, someone decided to keep Jedi English spelling, but pronounce it as though it were "Yedee" Also, they went on to "translate" some names: Han Solo = Ian Solo 3-3PO = D-3BO R2-D2 = C1-P8 Darth Vader = Dart Fener (just about always called Lord Fener) Death Star = Morte Nera [Black Death] Finally, In the Italian version, a "Yedee" would clearly wield a laser sword (spada laser).

7:54 - a lot of it is based on nostalgia! We all come to The Wars from different beginnings but ultimately one part or another of it grabbed us and we held on tight. Comics, books, movies, cartoons, action figures, video games, etc.... 40 years worth of it and we all hold some piece of it in high regards in our hearts. So Super Star Wars Nerds to just Star Wars Fans, we love it and will keep coming back. That's the reason why I'm OK with Disney owning it now. Disney isn't going anywhere, therefor the future of Star Wars is secure.

The American Star Wars comics by al Williamson have a few issues that were drawn before the movie came out. The artwork looks a lot closer to Ralph McQuarry concept art. This artwork in this Chinese version looks a lot like Flash Gordon comics, it's pretty well drawn

At 3:25 the ship is actually what i assume to be based of a 宇宙戦艦, or a space battleship. And the model is an actual spaceship of an anime called 宇宙戦艦大和 (space battleship yamato), a 1974 anime. During that time period there were a lot of animes that featured spaceship models that were inspired by real life battleships. And since Chinese people probably had slightly more access to Japanese media more than the western ones, they thought battleships looked like that in the Star Wars movies too. Not an expert but that's just what I know. Sorry for the long explanation

This is funny though, because it has, in fact, been speculated that Lucas had some inspiration from "Yamato". Lord knows he had no qualms about stealing from the Japanese! Also, in the Star Wars novelisation, ghost written by Alan Dean Foster, it was called "Blue" squadron. So I'm guessing that was accurate to an earlier draft.

I just thought that I would say I am 17, and didn’t see the movies till I was probably 8 or 9. I had heard the line “Luke I am your father” before I even knew who like was. I don’t have any of the nostalgia factor and still love the movies. And yes, I know that it’s not actually luke I am your father but that’s what all the kids in my class thought it was. And yes, I know this video came out a while ago. Just thought I would share my experience anyway. I really enjoy your channel by the way. Keep it up. You are making great stuff.

So my family adopted three girls from China who grew up there till about age 14. And yeah ... without the cultural background in Star Wars, they just ... really ... really can't get into Star Wars. No matter what. We've tried. We've tried everything. Original trilogy? Might as well have been a six-hour screen saver. Prequel trilogy? Apparently a blank screen would have been more riveting to them. Rogue One, they started off okay but then they just wandered out of the room before the halfway point. They didn't mind The Force Awakens, interestingly. They liked Chewbacca in it. They thought he was cute. But I can't get them to watch a single solitary minute more of the series now. I'd be surprised if a Star Wars film ever makes it big in China. I love my sisters, but Star Wars is a banned subject in polite conversation now.
