Elpenor is the man who died at Circe but no one not even Odysseus or his crew knew until they made it to the underworld also he was originally going to have a part in this song but it was cut out because it came off more comedic then Jay intended Here is the lines- Ensemble: Elpenor Elpenor: I died, and nobody noticed, I died and nobody cared Odysseus: Elpenor, how did this happen? When did you meet your despair? Elpenor: I drank wine from a chalice. On top of Circe's palace. And fell and broke my neck in shame. But what do you care? So many deaths happen under your reign. In the Odyssey, the fleet is visible from Ithaca, and Odysseus’s family bring his mother out to welcome him home, and so she can see him first. Then the wind bag is opened, releasing the storm. Ody’s mother dies of a broken heart after seeing his ship being blown away from Ithaca, believing that the storm destroyed the fleet.

With regards to if this is just how the afterlife is in Greek Mythology: Mostly. The Greek afterlife is split into several domains, such as Tartarus, Elysium and Asphodel. But all of that is rather moot, because in order to get to any of them, your soul has to pass the river Styx. That's what Greek funeral rites were all about. You may have seen images of bodies with coins over the eyes? Those coins are to pay the ferryman, Charon, to cross. Because Ody was unable to give his men funeral rites and couldn't give them the coins to pay their toll, none of his men can pass to the actual afterlife and are stuck in the River Styx calling out with their final thoughts on repeat until the Ferryman can get round to them. How long that is is vague and depends on the source, but often hundreds of years. That's one of the reasons that drowning was such a feared way to die in Greek Myth. Because unless your body could be recovered, there was no way to perform funeral rites, so you would just continue drowning over and over again in the river Styx. It's also why only being able to "remember them" was such a big deal in the Cyclops saga. He couldn't get his men out. He couldn't give them funeral rites. He was sentencing them to an afterlife of fear and confusion. It's also what makes Polities' appearance here all the more heartwarming. his final thoughts weren't of fear and confusion, it was of peaceful optimism. So although it's sad, it's also amazing that the thoughts he's condemned to repeat until the ferryman eventually gets round to him are at least not sad ones

Adding to the "sad facts", when Odysseus sings about the infant, the bells in the background are playing the infant's tune from the very first song. Another sad fact, the mom's theme is a modified version of Odysseus' theme (different key on piano)
@kittycatzuka17 күн бұрын
Fun fact, it's confirmed canon that the spirits are stuck singing their final thoughts. The soldiers blamed Odysseus for incurring Poseidon's wrath by sparing the cyclops Polites still wanted his best friend to keep believing in open arms His mom never stopped hoping he would come home Also aside from the lyric about it, there is another reference to the infant in the music itself. The bell tolling does the same lullaby melody that played when Ody found the infant in the first song, just a bit slower

Fun fact: The original story and this consider that one man to be "forgotten" because he got drunk on Circe's island and died from falling down. So unless you know the original story you wouldn't be entirely aware of what happened to this 1 additional loss when originally there was 43 men under his command. It was meant in this saga as more of a jest and humorous moment, Jay even said he had thought about writing a part or even a song for this one soldier but found it ironic that he was "forgotten" and left it as the forgotten soldier who got drunk and fell to his death, essentially *kek* himself.

"558 men" Rip Elpenor lmao In the actual Odyssey, after the wind bag gets opened, they get blown back to Aeolis (the wind god), Ody asks for another wind bag and gets told no, so they sail back to Circe and shack up there for like a year to recover and resupply. During that time, Elpenor gets drunk and passes out on the roof of the palace, and when he wakes up and tries to roll over, he falls off the roof and breaks his neck.

Sad fact(Kinda): it is likely that all the soldiers and polities are here because they didn't get a proper burial and couldn't cross over into hades properly, what does that say about his mother.
@colt190317 күн бұрын
So yeah, Odysseus' mom killed herself by walking into the sea and drowning after she saw his fleet get blown away by the storm in Keep Your Friends Close. She didn't want to be waiting for him forever, so she killed herself. And now she really will be waiting for him forever. Wanna know why? No? Too fuckin' bad cuz I'm telling ya anyway!😈 In Greek Myth and culture for the time, proper burial rites included putting a pair of coins over the eyes of the deceased. These coins were meant to pay Charon, the Ferryman of the Dead, to take you across the River Styx and into the Underworld proper. No coins? No passage. You're left stuck in the Styx for all eternity, never to pass into the afterlife. Basically, without those coins, you're damned to an eternal purgatory. This is, more or less, the closest thing Greek Myth actually has to the Abrahamic Faith's depiction of Hell. Hell is a fiery purgatory from which there is no escape that the damned will burn in for all eternity until the end of Time itself. The River Styx is a similar purgatory where the damned are trapped until the end of time itself, except it's not as torturous as Hell is. That said, it likely existed in Myth to fulfill the same purpose as Hell- which is to say, it's a punishment for those who act against the wishes of the Gods. Because when you think about it, what more likely way is there for you to die and not receive a proper burial than by angering the Gods and having them sink your ship, or strand you on an uninhabited island, or strike you dead with a bolt of lightning? Anyways, back on topic, Ody's mom assumed he died in that storm, which means he would have died without a proper burial, thus trapping him in the Styx as a Lost Soul for all Eternity. So, she killed herself by going into the ocean and letting herself drown, intending to trap herself in the Styx for all Eternity so she can he with her son. However, Ody survived, as we know. And seeing as how he's most likely gonna make it home and subsequently be given a proper burial when he dies of old age or what have you, that'd mean he'd get to go into the Underworld proper. His Mom, though? There's no saving her. She's damned herself to the Styx. Waiting. For a son she'll never see again. Have fun crying yourself to sleep tonight!😊
