People already hit you with the "Jay's mom plays oddy's mom" heartbreak, but Ill hit you with the "Oddessy" heartbreak too. When the crew opened the wind bag, they were within eyesight of Ithica. Literally a few miles or a few hours out from being home and being with their loved ones. Odysseus' mom was literally standing at the docks watching them sail in when the wind bag was opened, casting them back into the ocean in essentially a double-god powered storm. She believed she watched her son die just hours out from home after 10-11 years being away, and she (cant remember specifically but one or the other) died of a broken heart/killed herself in her grief.

If you want your heart extra ripped out, the souls in the underworld other then a small few exceptions don't actually have their minds or are aware of anyone going by them, they're just repeating their last thoughts before they died. Which means that the crew are asking "Why Captain?" As it was there last thoughts, Odysseus's Moms last thoughts was She loves him and will continue to wait for him however long it takes, and that Polites WHILE BLEEDING OUT AND DYING IN THE CAVE AFTER BEING CRUSHED BY THE CYCLOPS, has is last thoughts be "Greet the world with open arms, I'm dying, but Odysseus, hold onto kindness, let yourself lead with your heart and find happiness"

Just a little bit of trivia, in the original poem, the prophet does in fact help Odysseus and tells him exactly where to go and what to do in the next few songs. So when the musical's prophet says "There's a world where I help you get home, but that's not a world I know", he's referring to his poem counterpart

As funny as it always is to picture hades reacting to Monster, sadly the Odyssey was written before hades even existed in Greek mythology. Back then, hades was not the name of a God, but was what the Underworld was called (iirc)

The head band Penelope ripped off Ody's head actually symbolizes that Ody no longer adheres to Polites' philosophy of "greet the world with open arms" since he decided to be the monster. That head band was from Polites when he died remember when WolfyTheWitch animated that Ody took it from the body of Polites and brought it with him some artist tried to tie all the considered "cannon" of the fandom so Gigi also has that head band with Ody.

Acording with Jorge everything that the dead people sing in the first music were their last thoughts, which is brutal because that means that Ody's men died blaming him, Polites even when dying still keep thinking that the world is beatiful and that life is amazing and worst of all his mom die being sure that she would be there waiting for her son when he got home.

I don't know if it's ever explicitly stated but a pretty common warfare strategy at the time, especially if you're attacking the enemy in their home turf, was to cut off food supplies and starve them out. After 10 years of burning farms and blocking trade routes, I don't know if Troy would have very much left to pillage tbh

In Circe's case, she doesn't regret that she did those things, but she does regret that she felt her actions were necessary. She's like Ody in that she became a Monster even though she wishes she never had to. That's the whole point of her final verse about how "maybe the world will need a puppeteer no more" or maybe it will. She's willing to accept both outcomes, but she'd much prefer the former.

I don't know if anyone has pointed it out yet, but the river they are sailing down is the river of lost souls. People who never got a proper burial and are forced to float for eternity is basically a state of limbo. That's why "Rember Them" was such a heartbreaking song. He knew at that moment they would never get the afterlife they deserved. The theory (maybe in some translations?) is that Odysseus' mom saw the ship in the song "Storm" because it was that close to Ithaca. But when she saw massive ways take it away, she thought Odysseus had died. So she threw herself from the cliff into the water to join him...

However, packing enough food or raiding is not much of the problem. The issue lies in the fact that they were in a war for 10 years, and not just a war, but a siege specifically. Not only have they expended their own resources, but the defenders of Troy have likely used up every last bit they had. 21:17 Also, the cyclops is blind and a giant, there's a solid chance he doesn't even know the glasses are there.

What you're failing to understand here, is that in ancient greek culture 'Ruthlessness is Mercy Upon Ourselves' was actually the law they lived by. You are loyal and good and kind to those who are yours. Your friends, your family, your people. But you are as horrible, cruel and vicious to your enemies as you possibly can be. If someone wronged you, you didn't just kill them, you killed their families, burned their cities and salted the earth. Vengeance and spite toward your enemies was taken to the utmost extremes every time. So Odysseus is actually doing the right thing here, and its what he should have been doing all along. If he hadn't tried to show mercy from the start, they could have avoided most if not all the trouble they have faced. If he had raided the island instead of scouting ahead, if he had killed the cyclopes instead of letting him live. Athena warned him. Polites, for as much as everyone likes him, was an idealistic idiot.

You've got the songs correct. In musical terms, this would be the final song in Act 1 before the intermission. Which, just imagine this particular song as that point. We're talking the place most musicals put songs like Defying Gravity or Non-Stop, or One Day More. Big emotional swells that send the audience out clapping and excited into the intermission. Instead here, you've got this incredible but ultimately somber song of a man realizing he has to kill the part of him that was open and, to the point, naive. About giving up on the ideals that his best friend had touted in Open Arms and instead buying in on the philosophy of his enemy in Ruthlessness. About becoming a monster. And that dramatic horn note at the very end, the lights go out and intermission hits. That's an incredible end to Act 1. I don't know if the crowd reaction you want is applause or just stunned silence.

Loving the reactions. The head band was Polites headband that he took from the body. Taking it off was symbolizing letting go of kindness. As far as their food issue, the war was a siege war that lasted ten years. The city had nothing to give and Odysseus' army was one of many that were called to siege Troy. After ten years, everyones store were empty. In fact that is why the Trojan's thought the armies had all abandoned the war and left the horse as a peace offering because Troy was an island kingdom so getting resources was hard for everyone.

One mythology thing that makes this even sadder (not sure it’s canon in Jorge’s interpretation of myth) but if someone isn’t given a proper burial with the coin to pay Charon to ferry them across the river Styx and rest, they’d have to wait a hundred years. However, given that some believed that those not buried would never reach Charon in the first place, it’s possible his men were fated to spend eternity unable to rest. They didn’t just die but they’re in a way damned to never find peace even in death. This is why the bitterness in Ody’s voice is so pained in remember them. He knows he can’t retrieve the bodies to bury (something even in war with other Greek city states, they’d allow people to reclaim the bodies after battle.) and so he not only lost his best friend, but inadvertently made it so polities wouldn’t find rest. At least that’s based on what I’ve read on it. Beliefs differed sometimes between city states often so it’s hard to find definitive information sometimes.

I know it’s only a concept right now but I had a crazy concept where during monster and no longer you you start hearing a voice and octave lower singing with Odysseus, and then during monster on the stage, during the little rap bit, an older, larger Odysseus starts pacing in circles with current Odysseus, he’s singing an octave lower, then right before “then I’ll become the monster” he shoves current Odysseus off the stage and is now Odysseus for the rest of the show

Man that point you made about him not losing anyone in that trojan war, and if he had been a monster back then that would probably have changed was such a great point i think gets overlooked. So many people just write the moment with the cyclops off as weakness or just straight up a dumb idea. I think people forget hes human. He made mistakes and big ones. But that did not make him a bad leader. He was just doing what he thought he had to do to get home while trying to maintain some humanity.

About what you talked about during monster about Circe regretting what she does. I don’t think so honestly. At first maybe she did regret it or feel bad but during the song done for her line was literally “the last time we let strangers we faced a heavy loss”. I think after that moment she stopped regretting it because she was protecting her nymphs. Also if you haven’t gotten any recommendations on what animatics to watch for next saga I suggest watching - Gigi’s animatics for the first song - second song Ximena’s animatic - Gigi animatic for third song. - Crashite for fourth animatic - and for the last song watch Neal illustraters animatic. Though some of the context about what happens gets a little lost since the setting is meant to be on a boat.

God this Saga is just depressing lol I cry almost every time i hear his mom start singing I REALLY hope you'll do Duvetbox's Thunder Bringer! It has the most impactful ending that is perfect for a first watch, it hits a LOT harder! Neal's is great too, but it's not in a canon location and the ending personally doesn't hit as hard (even if the design for a certain someone is better lol) So I really hope you'll watch Duvetbox's!!

So yeah, sad fact time. Ody's mom killed herself after seeing his fleet get blown away by the storm that happened after his crew opened the wind bag in Keep Your Friends Close. She literally walked into the sea and let herself drown so that she could be with him in the Underworld, cuz she assumed he died afterwards. Since he would have died without a proper burial, he would never be allowed into the Underworld proper, instead being trapped in the River Styx for all eternity. So, she also dies without proper burial, confining her to the River Styx for all eternity. Odysseus never died in that storm, though. So instead, there's a good chance he'll receive proper burial, making his mother's death pointless. Instead of joining him, she's forever waiting.

You know when you were watching the "Waiting" portion of the song, I was crying because it's so sad, but also laughing because of your reactions. Also you aren't missing a song, it's implied that they come out of the Underworld, but never told how. This was the end of act one, so in a live performance right now would be where the intermission is. Next saga is Thunder Saga, including the following in this order: Suffering, Different Beast, (some animators have combined these songs into one animatic, I suggest Any Tigerfly's) Scylla, Mutiny, Thunder Bringer. Also on Jorge's channel he has some animatics that are only parts of the song, but they're shown on the livestream before the saga releases. I suggest watching them, they're awesome.

18:00 Initially I would have thought this same thing, though from what I know (From articles and books I've read) The Greeks spent the 10 years of the war mostly starving the Trojans, raiding farms and keeping any transport of food from getting in or out of the city, which is why they wouldn't have found any food even after winning the war, the trojans would have simply been out of food by the time the Greeks had won.

Spoiler-free fun fact! Something you missed at 2:34 is the fact that the dead soldiers say "558 men": if you do the maths, when Poseidon said "43 left under your command" in Ruthlessness it implies that 557 men had died in total. That means that between Ruthlessness and The Underworld someone else must have died. So, according to the story of the Odyssey, there was a man named Elpenor who was apparently mentioned only for the fact that he was meant to be a character who just died and was completely forgotten about! His story was that he got drunk and fell off the roof of Circe's palace and broke his neck. I think he was supposed to have a larger role in EPIC but Jorge decided to remove his parts because his lines in The Underworld sounded too comedic to actually keep in. However, the fact that they kept in "558 men" while *still* having Elpenor as the forgotten character in both the Odyssey *and* EPIC is just funny. Fun fact about this what the souls are saying in the song were the last things they were thinking about obviously the crew blaming the captain and calling for him and his mother saying she’ll always love him and how she’ll wait for him. But this implies that when Politis got struck by the cyclops and was on his dying breath he still wanted odysseus me merciful and to still great the world with open arms 😭😢

The funny thing about Tiresias (the prophet) going "there is a world where I help you get home, but that's not a world I know" is a small nod to the Odyssey, where he does tell Ody how to get home, and even warns him about a thing that happens in the next saga Also I like to think he wanted to be more specific since Ody clearly had no idea WHO he was talking about, but he was cursed with I Am Forced To Be Very Vague Because I Am A Prophet, so all he could do was repeat himself and hope Odysseus eventually gets it
