Can you imagine how sick and weak she had to have feeling while recording this? Her heart and the rest of her system was already damaged from her eating disorder, anorexia nervosa. Yet, as usual she did it in one take. Her voice still chokes me up at times. At the time it seemed impossible to have a world without her in it. But she still lives on in her music.

You know she started out as a drummer with her brother Richard Carpenter. He played piano and did some singing as well. She died from anorexia…well it was the side effects from it that caused other complications and eventually her heart just gave out. This eating disorder that took her when she still had so much to share with us started from ONE article saying she was “chubby” and that caused a snowball effect in the media when she was nowhere near overweight. She never liked being in the spotlight and preferred to sit at the drums playing and singing but her management team essentially made her be front and center. My momma cried the day she passed away and my older sister walked down the aisle after their vows to “We’ve Only Just Begun” She was a very cute girl before the images of her used in this video. By this time she was so sunken in and fragile. It messed up her teeth from all the vomiting and she lost most of her hair-cheekbones completely caved in. Thank you for covering this song. And yes. She was an angel who only wanted to love and be loved and never got it.. 😔

RIP to Karen Carpenter. In case you believe words can't hurt then they need to pay attention. That poor woman believed what so-called people would say and request of her regarding her weight or looks in the music business and that beautiful soul took it to heart and eventually died from the damage she did due to anorexia. You can see how thin she is in this very video.

"Now" was a work lead, recorded in one take, and was intended to familiarize the musicians with the song as well as Richard's arrangement of it. After a complete music track had been recorded, Karen would have then returned to the studio and recorded new vocals for the song. But as it was, the work lead turned out to be the last song Karen ever recorded. In the bio-pic made-for-TV movie, the way this was depicted is that Karen said she wanted to do another take, but Richard and the engineer both said no way because could not be improved upon.

It’s amazing, I read the book Little Girl Blue. In it, it said that Karen did not feel the need to warm up her vocals before she was about to perform. She (Karen) would say she would just walk out on stage and sing. Pure magic!!! Also the Karen Carpenter Story referred to her as having a one in a million voice. There are a great deal of talented artists living and not living. To me Karen’s voice and talent , penetrates to my very soul and simply takes my breath away. When you think of how many talented artists we have lost over the years at early ages it's mind blowing. What kind of demons are thrown into their lives with success and stardom? The physical and mental tear down from the constant demands of the industry. Tour, record, repeat, knowing that to the powerful labels you are but a disposable commodity. How many smiles and photo shots at award shows get turned into tears shortly after the studios move on from you? To be blunt, Karen was neglected by her family and her label. Her needs as an individual never satiated. Call it what you will, her loss was needless and tragic.

Not only was this her last recording, it technically wasn't an 'official' recording in that what you're hearing is her 'scratch track' 'throw away vocal' intended only as a guide for the musicians laying down the backing track. Then she would go back and do the 'real' final vocal. She never did. This is portrayed by Cynthia Gibb at the end of the made for TV movie "The Karen Carpenter Story".

Sadly, some of the Greatest Gifts to Music were also the Last Songs Legends Recorded. This one From Karen, "Grow old along with me" by John Lennon, "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding and "I got a Name" by Jim Croce. Today, we're thinking about them because Olivia Newton-John Passed away. Another Angel has joined the Heavenly Choir and the World is all the Lesser for it. RIP to all of them.
