Ive always wished movies like this were used as the tool they could be to teach. Theres movies that are fun and done, and there are movies that wouldnt be considered "fun and entertaining" to watch, but ought really be considered something important to see, experience, think about and discuss. Thats one of my favorite things about reaction videos to movies like this....the dialogue it inspires and getting to hear other peoples perspectives just adds to the story, as we get to hear each others thoughts about things often not discussed in a peaceful way

A lot of people really liked the movie when it came out for the same reasons a lot of folks here do: it shows a side of reality we need to know about, however small or long-forgotten. The issue, as I remember, is that nobody was terribly excited about talking about this awesome movie they saw about Neo-Nazis. I'm 42, and when it came out it was hard to even tell other white people (I'm white) that I thought the movie was great because of what you can learn from it. So, I think a lot of people fully respect this role for Edward Norton. He didn't get credit for the reasons above.

I believe the original intent was for Derek to go back to the gang after the death of his brother. But Norton cut the film without the director and the studio sided with Norton because the director was behind schedule and they wanted a finished cut.

The basketball scene Edward Norton went through 6 months of training with Tim Grover. He said if he can't dunk the basketball he wouldn't film those scenes faking the dunks. @gingerbreadman1969 This is just what I heard from Ed Norton and the director in interviews. It's probably just a director decision to be more dramatic in the scene. If you don't know Tim Grover is Michael Jordan's trainer and Norton said it took him around 6 months to actually increase his jumping ability for the scene. I also heard the rim may have been under regulation (not confirmed) during filming to make Norton look more athletic.
@gingerbreadman1969Ай бұрын
@@zombiegoatt4282 I don't doubt what you heard, it just seems to me if you could really do it, or spent 6 months of training to increase your vert like that (which I've never heard of.. if that were possible every college player in the country would be able to slam dunk) you definitely film it wide shot to get the authenticity. Just sayin'. 🤔😏
@zombiegoatt4282Ай бұрын
@gingerbreadman1969 you definitely can increase your vertical but it won't be but 3 to 8 inches. Reportedly Norton was able to grab the rim before shooting so he would only need about 4" of improvement if that's true.

@@zombiegoatt4282 So it's back to why shoot the scene from that angle then? Like he jumped off a trampoline or dunked on a 7' rim? @MrSheduurКүн бұрын
Racism is something that will always be with us, and it is in everyone, because it is something that is closely intertwined with tribalism. Some people are easier to fall deeper into it, others will not, but everyone has predjudice or resentment inside of them towards others who are not like themselves or the people close to them. That does not make it a bad thing automatically, but it becomes a problematic thing, the more you resent people outside of your tribes, just for being different to the groups you deem closest to you. The more you go out and live and actually make connections with people who are not almost the same as you, the less resentment you will have brooding inside of yourself.

Ooh one of my favorite movies that I never need to see again lol. I watched this randomly at someone’s house 15+ years ago when I was a freshman in high school and got glued to the screen the entire time. Such an impactful if brutal movie that had some issues of its own (director and Edward Norton battled for control of the ending) but is one of the most striking things I’ve ever watched. Can just tell by the first few seconds which scene you’re making those faces at 😬😬😬
@dnc176925 күн бұрын
Hands down, one of the best lines in the movie (and almost of any movie, really) is when Sweeney was talking to Derek about him being a racist, 'Has any of it made your life any better ?' That's a question you can apply to just about anything in anyone's life. If the answer is 'no', then obviously something has to change.

Ethan Suplee is such a good actor. Directly compare his role in American History X as Seth to Louie Lastik in Remember the Titans. In American History X, he's a raging racist, but then in Remember the Titans, he has as much soul as any brother. It's a trip to see them side by side.

Never heard of you guys before, but this reaction popped up on my feed this morning. This movie in my opinion is one of the greatest movies that doesn't get much acknowledgement. I understand it's a very very hard movie to watch, but I was born into a family with this type of hate. My father raised me that way from the time I was young until my parents divorced in my teens. This movie and this movie alone completely changed my outlook and approach to life. Sweeney asking Derrick " Has anything I've done made my life better?" is such an amazing quote. But this is one of my favorite movies of all time. It is still tough to watch years later. Because I saw this movie in my teens not long after it came out and it had such an impact on my path in life. I'm forever grateful to this movie for showing me just how pointless the hate I had for people simply because of the color of their skin.

Throughout the time we have had this channel it has really opened our eyes to how much a film can impact life. Movies like this teach a great lesson to those who can see it and understand that it's just not a motion picture. We love to hear stories like these because usually after watching something we talk about what we thought off camera and get into deeper conversations and this was one of those films where we were just kind blown away from how real and raw this movie was. We learned some lessons of our own after watching this and we are happy we were able to capture that for you guys and we are able to speak about the lessons we learned. Thanks for the support and hopefully we can watch more movies like this one!

The kid that shot Danny was caught in the same cycle Danny was. Danny had Derek show back up and showed him the light before it was too late. The black kid had those old heads leading him on. He followed Derek's path. Starting the cycle all over again. It's not two sides of the same coin. It's two feet walking the same path. Not separate but one.

yeah those rightwing extremists can sneak up on you. My brother was hanging around with skinheads (we live in germany) when he was younger, because he liked the cameraderie around them, but when they started smashing up stuff and going down the hateful road, I eventually got him to stop hanging out with these morons. We still talk about this chapter in his life from time to time, and he is one of the most liberal people you can imagine, he still does not understand what really drove him into all of this at the time.

You guys hit on the nature of good and evil early in the reaction, and I chewed on that throughout. The relativism of "there is no evil" based on perspective is appealing, but flawed. As is the black and white application of "evil." We can understand how things came to be (relativism), but still clearly see the objective good or evil. White gangs, black gangs, asian gangs, hispanic gangs...we can somehow explain them, but the use of violence and crime to achieve something "better" is evil on its face. Great reaction, gentlemen. I appreciate your enjoying this great movie with us.

One of my favorite parts of American History X is Danny & the kid that shoots him are a part of the same duality that the entire movie explains. Perfect quote at the end "Hate is Baggage" sums up the entire movie as Derek has to face the consequence of his Hate. Which the Kid that shot Danny has his own Hate he has to deal with & you can see it in his eyes as it all unfolds. The movie doesn't get to show the never ending cycle that is Hate. Which is why we have to hope that the mystic cords of memory will swell & again be touched by the better angels of our nature...
