It’s been my experience that the one person that is running late is usually a habitual offender. Their whole life is 15 minutes late and they expect everyone else to accommodate them over and over again.

As a driver in the UK the biggest issue i face in the industry is management and passengers. Management took me off the routes for stopping my bus in a safer location than where the council decided the stop should be. Opposite the stop is an island on a 50mph road off a blind summit. One particular Karen was unhappy several times i did this despite the explanation i gave her until eventually her behaviour led me to removing her from the vehicle. Management didnt like that yet they agreed the stop wasnt safe.

Having driven scheduled routes, shuttles, and motor coach charter operations, I clearly can identify with your report. I have even had passengers on scheduled routes attempt to ride without paying their fare. My preference has been to drive charters rather than scheduled routes in order to avoid the crazies who sometimes plague those routes. At the same time, I have also met and become friends with many scheduled routes passengers who have made driving those routes a pleasure. Their support and understanding has always been appreciated.

James, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for posting this. It's really refreshing to have someone explain what really happens when we're late. No matter what I tell passengers, some just don't want to believe it and think we're just sitting on the side of the road twiddling our thumbs. As for the last-second passengers, that's an everyday occurance. I got to a stop last week (late mind you), so I told everyone they only had a quick 10 minute break. One guy decided to go down the street to the Wawa to get food, and as a result, got left. He came running up to the bus after I had already left the station and was caught in traffic, begging to get back on but I wouldn't let him. We have a policy that once we shut the door, it doesn't open again until the next stop. I have no doubt he went back to the station raising cane, saying I left him and need to be fired, blah blah blah.

A great video, thanks for posting it. I used to drive a rural bus in the UK between 2 towns, and in order to reduce the number of buses they needed on it , they made the time table almost impossible to keep to. You certainly did not wait for passengers and they often got a fast ride around the country lanes. Driving them fast though meant they would sometimes breakdown and you had to wait for someone to come out and rescue you.

James, I am so happy that guys like you shed some light on the bus industry. And we can get a good picture on why bus companies are struggling to find drivers. And having some clips from other scenes what I have learned is what makes these videos stand out. Right at 2:12, we hear what each driver has to run their bus through and that is called a "defect test". Things such as your wipers, doors, gauges, lights, all your alarms, etc. And things like the motor has to be checked to make sure it's running like it should. As you said James, these big tour buses eat up a lot of space and sometimes some of these motorists don't bother to stop and think about the space that is required to turn these big things and how much more room is required for these things to stop. Those double-decker buses may look pretty cool, but trying to steer those towering buses, you really have to watch it. Once the double decker bus gets up to speed, there are times when it doesn't want to stop.

I'm glad to see you're back. I'm sorry to report that the NYC TA doesn't print schedules anymore. What's more, they removed the schedules from shelters. In fact, this is a trend with transit agencies in the greater NY metropolitan agencies. Being an old fuddy duddy at age 69 and people from out of town and not from this country, this is not a good idea.

LOL Waiting for Jr.....As a parent is yelling at you because you left early. 1. If I'm 10 minutes behide schedule. Than I am not leaving early. Your kid needs a better Smart watch.... 2. If your college age son/duaghter cannot make the bus on time. WIll they depend on you for the rest of their lives to lead them by the hand to get to work on time? Not my problem. My problem is the 40 that showed up on time, and (or) those that have a connection out of the Chicago Greyhound station. 3. passenger doesn't have a ticket to board . passenger: I Don't have a ticket. Driver: I'll need $20.00 to cover the ticket price . passenger.: But the ticket is only $13.00, and I don't have any money on me! Driver: Well, go get cash and another bus will be here tomorrow. passenger: But other drivers have allowed me to get on boa..... Driver.: Which driver ? I've been on this run for the last 3 years..... passenger ............ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm. passenger: A really confsed look on their face. As the bus pulls away. 3a. Those that showed up with $40.00 in change to buy a ticket in the middle of Nebraska ! And your hoping that your area is not under a Tornado warning or watch!! This happened alot with some noting having a ticket. Or the money to buy a ticket. Now before you write me a nasty comment. There was NO such things as an ATM when I drove for Greyhound. At Greyhound, Driver were allowed to sell tickets to passengers. When we got to the next station, a ticket was bought from the ticket agent. LOL To many of these are popping in my head right now.... Stay safe all Brothers and Sisters.

Hi James! Long time no comment! I can relate to all of this! 21 years of both Transit and Coach operations, it has happened way too many times, once, when driving a Sunday morning Metro route, I was running 5 mins late on my return run to the CBD, a well dressed middle aged lady hailed the bus, when she boarded she demanded to know WHY I WAS SO LATE! I LOOKED AT HER and said, " I saw a garage sale a couple of miles back and I decided to stop and have a look! She just stared at me then said, "no need to be facetious!!! 😂, I never years any more about the incident! Any way, great video as usual, stay safe out there!

personally here doing urban transit, we were trained heavily to never run on time and most certainly not early as passengers crossing between lines or the little old lady with poor time management that cant get to the stop on time. but a 3-5min delay to cover those situations can easily stretch out with traffic,crashes and a billion of other unforseen possible causes of delay.

This video reminded me of my past driving transit lol. I used to drive for OCTA before I came over to the charger world. From what I recall, some of the runs had very tight schedules to make it impossible to make. Some TAs do this on purpose so that drivers don’t arrive at certain timepoints ahead of schedule. Just load and go.

One of my scheduled route driving jobs, the driver's route sheet was 1 minute behind the published schedule the public saw. I hated it, always being a minute late. I guess they used to get a bunch of complaints of buses allegedly leaving early. This was at the dawn of the universal cell phone era where not quite everyone had a phone with a synchronized clock yet, and who knows what some people were seeing their watches to.

Thanks for this. I often ride a line run in California (the Marin Airporter, to be specific, with service between San Francisco International Airport and Marin County). Several years ago, they announced that they would no longer be serving the Central San Rafael transit center. I assume this is because of traffic and construction, and they couldn’t keep a schedule when serving that stop. Even though it was only about a block or two off the freeway, the exit was always backed up. Those familiar with the area probably know what I’m talking about

Even missing a traffic light can cause a delay. Around here they time the lights so if you miss one you miss the ones after it. So before you know it, you're 10-15 minutes late. Of course it depends on the system. Unfortunately here on Long Island they don't give drivers enough time. It's why when people need to make connections or be somewhere on time to allow a decent cushion, preferably at least 15 minutes. Of course with transit, when a bus falls behind it picks up more people making it delayed even more. I wish they'd have the traffic signals stay green for buses it would make things a lot easier on bus drivers and passengers alike! Great video though, most people blame the bus driver for being late but that is rarely the case, most of it is just out of the control of the bus driver or company.

Great video James! A lot of really good points made! I'm a hairstylist, and clients never seem to understand that when they are 20 minutes late for their appointment, if I indeed "to to squeeze them in"... then every client with an appointment with me that day will ALL BE DELAYED 20 minutes... not to mention me not getting a lunch break, etc. The service industry is full of all kinds of challenges, but we just do our best to treat everyone the way that we want to be treated. (And Karen's root touch up that's already a month late, will just have to be rescheduled when I have an opening 😂 ... or, she welcome to find another stylist that's willing to take her! 😂) Safe travels! And thanks for the great videos!

I totally understand what you presented to today’s video.I’m a retired transit bus driver from New York and there’s always a reason for the bus being late most of passengers understand especially if I’m the regular drive on that route it’s just that ver small percentage that expects you to be on time but whe they complain I just smile and tell them the situation. Then they may understand but if they don’t just keep it moving . Believe driving for 35 yrs it will never change any way I do appreciate the channel have a good and be safe and remember keep smiling 🙂

Great video as always! I am always amazed at the insane amount of hard work, sacrifice, and teamwork (yes, teamwork) that goes into operating any transit system. And I have a suggestion to all bus passengers: say hello to the drive when you get on and thank you when you get off. Unfortunately, I often find that I am the only one on the entire bus that does this. It really makes a difference.

People need to allow more time, you make a good point about drivers trying to catch up on time, I agree drivers should never be focused on catching up. However I do believe that a lot of the issues with late busses are indeed bad timetables. The problem I see with timetables is they use the same timings as they do when it quiet time, like for example takes 10 minutes between point A and point B when it is quiet, but in rush hour even though they know this bus will be held up in a lot of traffic, they still time it as 10 minutes. I also appreciate that if for whatever reason no traffic means the bus could be sitting there waiting for maybe 5 minutes if the timetable is amended, but then surely the intermediate bus stops should say approx. and advice customers saying please arrive and wait for this bus at least 5 minutes before hand.

Should've watched this video a day earlier.. I was stuck in traffic on my way to work, which made me late to start my shift. Due to a colleague not being able to drive his shift, I had to bring a bus with me to the relief point (in stead of a car). Unfortunately, my bus was too high for a low bridge, so I had to drive around. This cost me another 4 minutes on top of the 6 I was already late. In a rush whilst making a turn to the right, I took the curb with my back wheel, causing me to hit the mirror of my colleague.. Nothing too serious fortunately

If it was affordable like it is in the UK, coach companies can send a delay alert in their app to inform passengers of delays (like some airlines do). The problem is the cost of the communication infrastructure - You the driver (or bus GPS) communicate to central office "I am running late due to wreck on interstate", central office sends message to downstream passengers about delay, and those people receive an alert telling them of the delay. As for passengers are concerned research the route you're taking - is there road construction or bad weather between two points? if so take an earlier bus/train. I was delayed on a coach trip due to construction but it didn't affect me as I took an earlier bus to the airport and got to listen to the grumbling: "I am late for my flight" while I just calmly walked and checked in for my flight with over two hours left.

James I did subscribe and I shared this video with one of my pierce tranzit bus drivers. Yea. I have a few bus driver’s numbers to maybe see about getting together with them when they are not working. I sent this video to one of the bus drivers just now. I so agree with you man and I am a bus rider. The bus is my mode of transport beings that I am blind and don’t drive of course. I always love buses and have always loved them. I actually told a lot of my bus drivers about being a bus nut and geek and I am crazy about buses. I so coulnd’t agree with you more. All the bus drivers thank me for understanding if a bus is late which when taking the bus you get a real good sense of how to beee more patient. The bus is coming. We just have to wait for it. I have even had drivers apologize to me about running late and I always tell them that it is for sure not their fault. I mean passengers are so quick to blame the driver for everything and that is not good. If I blame someone about tranzit it is either the scheduling or dispatch but absolutely not the bus driver. Bus drivers always thank me for my understanding and being patient. This is cause I have riden buses all my life and i know what to expect. And that is along with riding buses does come a wait a lot of the time. Just cause we are their waiting doesn’t mean the bus is automatically going to bee their. Riding the bus really does help for a person to bee patient well, it should anyways. I have had some drivers especially during the weekends if i am going somewhere to work or pleasure they tell me all the time. “Man. You didn’t have to tell me that you are a bus nut. I can see it in your body language that you absolutely love buses.” And they laugh. And they tell me “yea.. you seem like that type of guy who would love riding buses, their are many people that don’t like waiting for buses or look like that type to just bee patient but you seem like you are that type of person to love buses.” And i tell them that the bus is my mode of transport and has always been. You actually grow up knowing that that is going to bee your way to get around when the bus is your mode of transportation. You learn things as you go as well. And riding the bus is a different story than riding with someone in their van or truck or car. Usually I would hold a conversation with someone in their car or van or truck. The bus though I approach it a different way. With this I usually obviously say hi to the driver of course but I will let them start the conversation if so. This way I can tell if they are going to bee a quiet or talkative driver. You when bus riding taking a tranzit bus if you do talk with a driver its best to see how they are going to start. I say let them start the conversation. And there are suddle hints that a driver doesn’t want to talk. Maybe by the 1 word answers or they just won’t say anything. So I always let them start the conversing. Bus drivers really can bee a great conversational starter. They know how to start a conversation and then it can go back to us as we are riding. And yes. I have taken greyhounds a lot too and they are a bit different. You really don’t get to talk with the bus driver to much. I really never did when they were driving. I might have said a few words to them little little conversing with a greyhound bus driver but it is easier to converse with a tranzit bus driver a little bit. But you just have to see what kind of driver they are. I have had ones that will talk with you the whole trip they will converse with you and then some that are just funnier than hell. Then I have had ones that just don’t want to talk that much they are quieter. Passengers a lot of the time get this wrong and say that the bus driver is rude cause they won’t talk but that is not true. I have corrected some people on the bus sometimes cause they will say something like “awe man have you had that driver? I don’t like them cause they are rude and won’t talk with me.” That is so far from the truth. The bus driver is not rude. It is cause maybe they just don’t want to talk and want to see that you get from point a to bee safely. But passengers seem to misinterpret that and say the driver is so rude. When riding the bus for me also I don’t do anything until the driver says to do it. Also i always have an ear opened to see if they are going to tell me something. Whether it is for safety or,,, making connections. It’s about backing down as a passenger and letting my driver direct me.

here in the Philippines only few of the several thousand bus companies (private or government run) have schedules of departure but almost non have time of arrival schedule because the traffic is so unpredictable, most bus companies that have departure times are those bus companies that have a first class service usually from pasay to baguio or cubao to baguio and vise versa but again no time of arrival schedule, they arrive whenever they arrive, the best thing they can do is to estimate how much time it well take to arrive using the average number of hours traveled in each direction multiple times by multiple buses, also the norm here is the bus will depart the station whenever the bus is full or if the dispatcher decided if the number of passengers inside the bus is enough even when not full yet, if there's no dispatcher, the driver and conductor will wait until the bus is full so the run will be worth the diesel being used, plus it's more money so who wouldn't want that

Here in the UK there's a bus company called Stagecoach and they run buses in almost every part of the UK, and their buses always turn up late. It hasn't been an issue until August 2021, the app is un reliable now and most of their buses don't show up at all or don't appear on the live bus tracker on the Stagecoach bus app. If you're interested about the company then I suggest looking it up and watching videos on KZbin, I live in Exeter Devon UK and me and my mum catch the R or the S bus into town because it goes near our house.

That's a perfect example of a bus company advertising something that they cant succeed on and management has not yet put into effort to re create their time table. I know its probably not as easy of a solution as I just said but obviously they are not setup properly. What it takes to get setup properly is probably not easy but sill they should give their passengers a time table that's do able. But with all that said. Its really unfair and miserable if the driver is taking the brunt of all of the delays from the riders. Unfortunately, the majority of the time it is the drivers that become the punching bag for the public or the hourly wage worker operating the phones.

@@MotorcoachWorld It's more like a perfect example of the social media whinging you mentioned in your video. Has that person been to every place that company run to be able to make the claim they are "always late"? Of course not. He has an issue with the route that runs past his door and exaggerates wildly to make his complaint sound bigger. Stagecoach, BTW is the company that founded and ran until recently Megabus which I assume you are familiar with in the US.

I live in Florida there's one other factor that you have to add for here and that's the Florida man factor. Also Greyhound here in Tampa shut their station down a couple months ago and they moved the new bus pick up spot to a homeless camp which is creating a whole lot of other issues.

My pet peeve with late busses is the “real time” information boards. Early in the morning waiting for the first bus of the day to get to work on time, board shows “05:30 Line 23 Queues” really? Queues at 0530 in the morning? and come 05:30 and no bus shows up the board now shows second bus of the day “06:05 Line 23” thanks for the “real time” information 😩

I’m surprised you didn’t discuss what is known in the rail world as schedule-padding. That is the concept that you have a stretch of rail (it could be road although rail is obviously more controlled), that with ideal conditions a safely operating train would take X minutes or hours to traverse it; most of the time it takes longer, and the scheduler specifies a intended travel time for the schedule that would ensure being on-time at the next time some percentage of the time- the higher the percentage, the more time is scheduled for the trip. If you schedule a bus 10 minutes to go 1 mile on a 40 mph road, you could probably get a 99.9% on time rate; the trade off (which is what really needs to be discussed in this topic) is that for roughly 99.8% of trips the bus or train will have to sit and wait so that it doesn’t leave early, elongating standard route time. Longer run-times for a given route increase reliability, but decrease speed. And speed vs. reliability is a discussion that comes out in different places depending on how imperative it is the typical passenger gets to their destination by the advertised arrival time; the less imperative, the better the argument for speed over reliability.

Hey, just found your channel, enjoying your content. This is kind of an indelicate question, just wondering if you ever did a video about the onboard lavs on Greyhound. I'm a former driver, and I could never understand why passengers inevitably head back there and blow up the lavatory. I used to issue a cautionary announcement at the beginning of charters, reminding people these are not actually bathrooms. They are not even as efficient as those found on airplanes. The lav on a bus is basically a large bucket with some chemicals in it. Whatever you deposit in that bucket is going to stay with us throughout the charter. Most people just ignored me and, without fail, at least one or more persons would go back there and blow up the spot. And the bus would just stink for the entirety of the charter trip because I would not always have a facility to dump the lav. I can understand the occasional emergency situation, but most of the time this just seems to be thoughtless people who, for reasons only God knows, enjoy taking a dump on a moving vehicle. it's also a pretty thoughtless thing to do, especially to the people seated toward the back of the bus. However, as often as not, when you blow up the bathroom on a bus, the entirety of the bus suffers because of it. The lav is best used for number one only. Anything else we should hold until we get to a rest stop. Just curious about your thoughts on this. Thanks.

Jmes you hit a lot of great points here but you missed a clip an quote from "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn" that would have fit nicely when talking about being late and running the bus down. That is Captain Spock's quote to Admiral Kirk: "The Needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few, or the one." Thanks for the great, informative vids. Stay safe out there. Also, here is a topic for a future video. Do any of the companies name their buses or do any of the drivers give the buses a name? Like say bus 2525 could be called the "Speed Bus" or 1701 could be called the "Enterprise". Just an idea for you to expand on.

If a scheduled route consistently runs late all the time on a given run then maybe the schedule should be adjusted to reflect that. Although I am sure there are reasons its not that simple.

Question, when a bus is schedule to depart at a certain time at the first stop, is it suppose to have fully boarded all the passengers and leave or is it the time it starts loading passengers? I’m seeing a lot of inconsistency with some bus drivers waiting to load passengers starting at the departure time while other drivers would start boarding few minutes early and departs at the departure time. Most first stop are at a subway and will always take up to 5 minutes to board all the passengers which can delay the departure time. Thoughts?
@MotorcoachWorld
@MotorcoachWorld Жыл бұрын
Usually a bus company that puts up a schedule define departure time as the time the bus leaves. In our case we advised passengers to arrive 15 minutes prior to departure time to allow for boarding. But boarding can definitely very depending on what types of issues occurred during boarding of people. Sometimes it could be an excess volume of luggage which results in longer boarding times, which will consequently delay departure. Other causes our passengers not having their tickets ready or other Variables. Whenever you service large volumes of people delays are going. The larger the group of people the longer things will take and the harder it will be to predict. Therefore more leniency should be given to operations like bus companies in airlines when their buses or aircrafts don't leave on time. But this is not an excuse for passengers who arrived late to use against the carrier that they should have waited on them.

The bus busness is like trucking. The rider has same problem with traffic or the bus is late making connection to the you the second bus beyond the riders control. I used two bused by two companies. This happen to airplane riders using two planes or bus and plane.. the taxi or Uber can cause delays tp getting to bus stop or terminal. I would rather beat stop or terminal early. I have an old Prevost conversion I know how they handle on back roads and streets not like a sports car

Yeah thats a good example of a bus company that got so big that its no longer properly managed anymore. Either Management is unable or unwilling to keep up or maybe a bit of both. The sad thing is the drivers and customer service reps probably take the brunt of the abuse from the unhappy passengers and that makes for a all around poor work environment .

@@MotorcoachWorld Everything you've said is spot-on. Plus, low-cost air travel puts it where bus travel is relegated to only the lowest demographic of traveler. The Hound was the best paying company in its day with a damned strong union. With the Megabus-styled curbside thing the hot new trend, traditional Greyhound travel is all but extinct. With very few actual GH terminals, I wouldn't dream of traveling that way. I'd say in the next 5 to 7 years, GH will be all but a memory.
