I spent fifty years in high tech product development. From consumer electronics, to marine equipment and NASA management. This boat, although not introducing anything particulary new, is the perfect integration of complimentary tech. Wonderful. Foils, electric drive, it was a marriage that had to wait for the right time. And that time is now. Kudos.

I do have one small criticism. In applications where one needs greater range, this system, although it makes it easier to adopt batteries, doesn't fundamentally support batteries as the prime power unit. It would be more cost effective at low intensity to install an equivalent power diesel generator with Rolls-Royce style baffling. That said, it is still fantastic engineering and it does at least lower the performance envelope for batteries to be installed at more reasonable weights and volumes.

They also don't damage the river banks, upset or drown juvenile water fowl, imperil moorings and moored boats, or damage mariners. Compare that to certain boghammer owners who seem to delight in "making their presence felt" and come racing by and leave you bouncing hard enough to make the ancient mariner puke. So, let's have more hydrofoils! This could be an example of using technology to design out the opportunity for certain sociopaths to behave badly in public, whether they like it or not. *I know boghammer isn't the term. Fabulous tech! Any idea how robust the foils are? If you were to hit a float (crab pot, net, log) ... What happens? In conventional outboard you may need to refurb a prop ... The hull may have a scrape or ding. How would one of the foils fare?
@rsaunders572 жыл бұрын
In the 1970s-80s, Boeing made the 929 Jetfoil ferry boat. It carries 200-300 people and runs at 45 knots. They sold 50-ish vessels, I rode on one in Seattle way back when. People always asked about hitting stuff, with all the trees that make it into those waters, but they never developed a sonar that would detect that sort of thing. The boat required a deep channel, so it could stop in an emergency. Several sharp maneuvers made the news, mostly for spilling drinks, but they claim there never had a vessel disabled by debris. You can't operate something like this with plants in the water, from a fouling and drag risk, and hitting a sandbar might be catastrophic. You'll want to keep to deep water, like Swedish Fjords.

Love the idea of hydrofoils. We (Canada) developed a sub-hunter hydrofoil in 1968 that could do 63 knots. Cancelled due to 'priority changes,' which usually means US interference. A twin hull design seems like a natural progression. My concern would be fishing nets, which make up a surprisingly large percentage of plastic waste in the ocean. Any plans to make the foils retractable?
@davidf22812 жыл бұрын
They are fully retractable already -- you can look up the Motor Boat & Yachting video on it from about a month or so ago which explains the retraction.
@JoeOvercoat2 жыл бұрын
The US interfering is like Capt Kirk violating The Prime Directive…often, and often maladroitly! That said, hydrofoils make a great anti-surface attack craft but hunter-killer helicopters and attack submarines really are the best way to kill attack submarines, so it was a fair cop.

What I find coolest about these hydrofoil boats is that... This simply isn't possible with petrol engines! ICE hydrofoil boats exist, obviously, but they are a lot more complex and expensive, because they need to keep the engine above the water while the foil operates a metre or more below. On the contrary, electric motors don't need air, so they can be put underwater, making them a lot smaller (the water itself is the cooling system), cheaper and more efficient. And you also get the added benefit of less noise and more stability. They truly show how electrification can be the answer to the questions we never dared to ask
@cyberista2 жыл бұрын
Superb combination of innovative engineering and product design. I was wondering about the pressure differential - to create the lift - spoken of only in terms of the angle of attack (effectively) . After getting up to speed, for minimal drag I think you'd want zero angle-of-attack and reliance on an aerofoil profile to generate the needed pressure difference. The 'wing' profiles certainly appeared to be aerofoil shaped.

A retractable rigid cockpit tonneau, that covered the entire seating area while the boat is waiting in its slip for the next outing, could be cheap, relatively low-efficiency solar panels that, low efficiency notwithstanding, would charge the batteries up over the multiple days between outings. Not many people use their boat every day; when you're running with only a couple of people aboard keeping the tonneau mostly deployed would probably also make a significant improvement on the vessel's aero drag (which cannot be ignored when talking about cruising speed and range) and further improve its performance.

Whether you travel through air or water, power requirements are proportional to speed, a single horse can pull a car or boat. In fact it is probably easier to pull a canal barge than a truck. Boats have a legal rating A,B,C,D with both distance away from the shore and number of passengers defined at build stage. A being cross Atlantic, B being cross channel, C inshore and D being river or lake. Then the number of passengers depends on the size and once you go beyond 24m or 79 feet, then build structure and number of crew can change. I would suspect that this boat is a C or perhaps a B. But range is then an issue so more likely a C rating.
@RandomGuyRandomNumber2 жыл бұрын
@@patrickjr11 Hydrofoils are not covered by the RCD Rating System. Vessels over 24m LWL are not covered by the RCD. The actual ratings A to D are descriptive sentences, not titles, as they were considered misleading. Even so, the ratings were previously A - Ocean; B - Offshore; C - Coastal; D - Sheltered, and were never as you suggest. The ratings are predicated on weather conditions and expected wave height, not distance from shore or crewmembers (the number of people aboard can alter a vessel's RCD rating because of stability differences but nothing is "defined at build stage". For example, the same boat may be dual rated as D with 5 passengers, and C with 3 on board). Range is not mentioned in the RCD ratings. The RCD ratings are not so much "legal ratings" as guidelines to consumers. Once a vessel is sold or imported, the ratings are pretty much irrelevant and a boat can be used in whatever way the owner desires, no matter how misguided. Given that the expected wave height for a C rating exceeds the ride height of this vessel, such a rating would be impossible even if a hydrofoil could be subjected to the same stability criteria, and there wasn't a failsafe built into the software that shut down the electric motor once the waves became too much for the system to work reliably. Please be more careful when spreading information on the internet.
@patrickjr112 жыл бұрын
@@RandomGuyRandomNumber I did provide a link that gave more details for anyone interested in the details but my answer was aimed at vast majority of the audience who are not into boats. I think it is a reasonable way of describing the differences. But in any case. Foils are not included, although given they are going to be on more and more boats going forward, perhaps they will impact the rules in future. The boat is still the boat in the end. The foils just improve efficiency.
@RandomGuyRandomNumber2 жыл бұрын
@@patrickjr11 There is no link in your comment. Everything you said is demonstrably false no matter at whom your comments were aimed. The titles of the ratings were even changed by the RCD / EU BECAUSE they were misleading (but you did not even use the correct OLD titles - you just plain made up your own !) and the entire ethos of the RCD is to provide information to people who are not familiar with boats - nobody with any sailing experience gives a toss about the ratings unless they have to comply as a seller or manufacturer. You even guessed at a rating that could never exist for a boat to which the regulations do not apply based on a measure that is not even mentioned in the compliance regulations, let alone the ratings criteria. Please educate yourself before spouting off on a subject you obviously know nothing about, and when your errors are pointed out, accept correction with some grace instead of doubling down and lying.

Now this was a good few years back but you could spend the day in the Loch it was in. If you went 20 miles in the days fun if felt like you had traveled far. The scary thing was you could watch the fuel gauge move on full power. In todays petrol prices ( yes they had to pay over the odds marina prices to use their pump) back then it burned through £100 in an afternoon and this was 15 plus years back and just thought wow that’s crazy in petrol you have to just accept your going back to put £100 in at the end of the afternoon. So I like this, it looks a fantastic toy to use on the water. More power to them if you forgive the pun. I’ve been around speed boats all my life they are poor on reliability akin to a classic car or at least they used to be so a more reliable boat - great. If we are considering flying boats then there are lots of other tech that can cut energy use moving over water - ground effect seaplanes, hydrofoil ferries, air bubble hull surface effect water displacement, waterjet propulsion. While this small boat design can work elsewhere, its weight penalty due to batteries as well as the energy needed to get it up to speed preclude many heavier boats. Point to point ferries which avoid most bad sea states can work with batteries but many ferry routes must face extreme and unexpected sea conditions where weight, balance and propulsion power is paramount. It might work in easier routes like the Red Sea.

Not so’s you’d notice. Maybe if you were sailing it on the surface of the sun.

44 kwh would last 2.5 hours ish, that sounds a bit low to me, but I don't know how long boat owners typically run a boat for in a day. It wasn't mentioned if the hydrofoils retract in shallow water.

Hate to be one, but that would make an excellent Spec Ops infil boat. Paint it Vanta black and you could probably pass within 100 meters without being detected. Major heat source is under the water, so helps with IR detection. Extremely low maintenance.

Great video guy's and the best part? you're presenter didn't use excessive use of her hands when talking! (It's the little things that can be annoying; ) )Cheers

It's beautiful and elegant and I think electric can be used in many boat applications. My concern is the damage done to the blades if you hit a lobster pot or fishing bobber. It could end up as a very expensive repair if the blade gets broken, or the motor damaged. That looks like a very expensive motor to replace.

10:45 How is not creating a wake in hydrofoil mode beneficial when going through a slow speed area?

I love this, but worry about what would happen if you were to hit a submerged object like a small log. It looks like it would be a very expensive fix.
@SpottedCreeper2 жыл бұрын
Yes I was thinking just this. I grew up on fishing boats in rivers and lakes, occassionally you'd hit a submerged object. If you were lucky the outboard would just kick up and save everything, or if slightly unlucky you'd need to replace the prop, or very unlucky, shaft got damaged :( With these boats, the whole motor is underwater so if it hit something substantial you could be in for a really expensive repair.

How does 50 nm stand up next to the typical range of a fossil boat and the typical trip length of a fossil boat?
@hmoxh2 жыл бұрын
A boat of that size easily uses 10 times more fuel than a car for the same range even if it goes slower than your average car.

Just no wind noise at all when in fact there was wind. That amazes me.

5:02 Hydrofoils as a concept is not new or terrible difficult. About 50 years ago the hydrofoil was so well developed since the yearly sixties that they where rather common. Or at least in southern Europe there where even "speed passenger boats" that where hydrofoils. I know Greece still got a a few of the hydrofoils in operation still. But a foil for every enthusiast that can afford it, that is new afaik. Candela's Pod is also new, and the integration of software and sensors to control the "flight" is new, well at least at this level and size in length.
