This discussion buried the lede, which is that red states should be thought of as "anti-blue" instead of red. (And blue states should be thought of as "anti-red" instead of blue.) In other words, an independent can win in an "anti-blue" state that a Democrat can't win, assuming no Democrat is on the ballot to split the coalition who prefer the independent over the Republican. In Utah in 2022, independent (former Republican) Evan McMullin showed it makes sense for Democrats to not compete in anti-blue states and anti-blue districts. The Utah Democratic Party chose not to nominate anyone to run for Senate against MAGA Republican Mike Lee so that McMullin could compete against Lee head-to-head, with no Democrat on the ballot to split the anti-Lee coalition. Although McMullin didn't win, he received a larger percentage of the vote than any Democrat ever did in Utah. Unfortunately, the Democratic Party is either too deluded to understand the value of not nominating a Democrat who can't win, or they won't put the interests of the nation ahead of the interests of the party. Donors too need to learn to support candidates who can defeat Republicans, not just support Democrats. That strategy is also a way to knock down the R majorities in state governments. Let independent candidates run head-to-head against Republicans in the anti-blue districts.
@thedavidcarney
@thedavidcarney 9 күн бұрын
I don't know if it makes sense to boil it down to entire states being anti-blue. In the 2nd District where I live, Democrat Tony Vargas is polling neck and neck, or even ahead of Republican Don Bacon. That said, I'm definitely glad the nebraska dem party chilled out about Osborne snubbing them.
@brothermine2292
@brothermine2292 9 күн бұрын
@@thedavidcarney : I agree. What I meant was anti-blue states in _statewide_ elections, and anti-blue districts in _district_ elections. That's what I meant where I wrote "it makes sense for Democrats to not compete in anti-blue states and anti-blue districts." In other words, in any election where a Democrat would be doomed to lose. The "nominate no Democrat" strategy also makes sense in an election where a Democrat has a chance to win, but it would be catastrophic if the Republican wins and an independent would have a _better_ chance than the Democrat has in a head-to-head contest against the Republican. In particular, it would be catastrophic if Trump wins, and Liz Cheney or Larry Hogan running as an independent with no Democrat on the ballot would probably have a much better chance of winning than Harris has (or Biden had). The coalition for Cheney over Trump or for Hogan over Trump would presumably include the following cohorts: 1. Most Harris supporters, because Harris supporters' order of preference is surely "Harris Cheney Hogan Trump" or "Harris Hogan Cheney Trump," and most voters understand the importance of voting for a "lesser of evils" compromise in order to defeat a "greater evil." 2. All swing voters who prefer Trump over Harris. 3. Voters whose reason for voting R is that they're anti-blue... maybe they associate the D label with socialism or communism. Larry Hogan ruled out running as a third-party candidate when he was courted by No Labels. But he was never offered the option by the Democrats to run head-to-head against Trump.

I hope this candidate wins. It's funny as an Australian listening to Emma and Luke talking about this independent Senatorial candidate who could vote Democrat on issues that would help the people of his state, and against or negotiate on things like the border. That's what Independents are supposed to do. We don't have the two-party system the US does. In fact, at our last election, the Green party added seats, an independent group (Teals) picked up 8 seats from conservatives, and other independents won seats. Our two main parties struggled for votes. We are used to Independents. I hope America can get used to them, too.

The strike Osborn was in the union leadership opposing to Kellog's corporate greed during the pandemic, not only revolved around wages and benefits and a two tier employment scheme, while the company enjoyed record profits. It was about an outright inhuman work environment which rank and file workers were forced to be subjecting themselves to. Treated like, cattle, or expendables, or however one might phrase it. They worked these people 12 hour work shifts, 7 days a week, with zero reprieve from all that potentially mind and body crushing labor. Acting like these people did not have lives to lead outside of work.

Harris calls Israel's actions "their right to self-defense." Her statements, which come from a previous prosecutor, district attorney, and attorney general, can only be interpreted as disingenuous. The ICJ by a vote of 15 to 2, with one of the two being an Israeli judge, ruled that there was enough evidence to go forward with the charge of genocide against Israel. There is no possibility that Harris does not know and believe that genocide is occurring in Gaza. But for reasons that only she knows, she refuses to speak out against the genocide or against the many crimes that Israel is committing and the US is complicit in.

Sinema ran as a democrat and was very blatantly just bought off to essentially become the moderate who blocks everything and/or lied about her beliefs while running; Joe Manchin was always transparently in the pocket of WV coal interests. Osborn, on the other hand, will of course likely not vote with the democrats on many issues (because he’s not a democrat), but he will certainly vote with them on economically populist matters like unionism and wealth taxes. Even more importantly, unlike in Arizona, no more democratic person could ever win this election, whereas Osborn at least stands a small chance - and if he does ever become the tipping point senate vote on some important democratic issue, he is motivated to use that influence to push democrats MORE toward pro-union and populist policies, unlike Manchin and Sinema.
