Mercedes in the 1980s had a pretty good idea what their cars should be. Well built, dependable, comfortable cars presented as a convertible, saloon, Estate or maybe even a coupe if you’re feeling adventurous. They weren’t boring exactly, but not many people had their pants set alight by the W126 S-class, despite its excellence. And oh yeah, they also made this… This is the story of the Mercedes 190E 2.5 16 Evo 2.

The 190 is probably one of my favorite cars. The fact Mercedes never gave up before the excellent E30 M3 and was confident in their platform paid off, in the end. Not only the 190s make for excellent city cars, they managed to win at least once. It's funny how most of this generation knows the 190 Evo II thanks to the infamous IA-15 License Test in Gran Turismo 4, but it probably means so many people will know this car for many years to come.

190 platform, in Portugal it is one of the most known. There are tons, but TONS of 190Ds, mostly used as Taxies (nowadays even less but some still are used). Those models don't die. They do a million kms easily with only oil exchanges, diesel and normal maintenance. Some have rusted floors, some have holes but their engines are pristine and run like a Swiss clock. It is trully a beast of a car in terms of reliability mechanically, and the same as driving a sofa (their seats are so comfortable).

Story goes in Portugal (can't confirm) that Mercedes had to lower the development time in newer models because customers would buy this models and then simply keep it, not buying newer ones because it simply there was no need for.

@@ThaDutchDK1989 well Mercedes and others use the perceived obsolescence (minute changes of designs time to time) and planned obsolescence. They may also use prevention of repairs in case of models who there are parts not available anymore to be sold, but normally alternatives exist as second hand and/or salvage hand parts.

I still have a 190D model 1992. Easily the most reliable car I have ever driven. I still drive it daily and it has run 500K already. No rust issues at all. I have been asked daily by strangers to sell it, it can sell it easily for 9k. Greetings from Marrakech.

I have a 1987 190D as my daily driver and it never misses a beat. Just wondering what kind of engine your 190D has since mine is a US spec 2.5l non-turbo diesel, I know a lot of other countries got much different specs of 190D's.

You forgot to mention it was originally being developed to race in WRC, until the Audi Quattro showed up and made it real hard to win in a RWD platform. Unless you’re Lancia ofcourse.

Supposedly someone at Mercedes even before Audi actually did, suggested it having awd. But the management said no, because the Rallye rules didn't allow for awd. (and then audi achieved a change in the rules...) The Mercedes Rallye idea is the reason Walter Röhl has a "year missing" in his rallye career. He had signed for Mercedes. And when the management asked the people responsible if it's possible to win in the first few rallyes, all said no. So the project got stopped.

@@llmkursk8254 One of the old Top Gear episodes Mika Häkkinen teaches James May how to Scandinavian flick in a rally prepped Evo 1. Pretty sure it was an Evo 1 anyways, a 190E either way. Looked at home in a Finnish forest on that. I loved my 190E when I owned one, and that was just the 2.6 straight 6. I’d love to have that car back.

About 15 years ago, my eldest daughter had a school homework project about women being successful in a man's world. Rather than do the usual Florence Nightingale or whatever, I suggested we do a bit about either Fabrizia Pons or Ellen Lohr. She chose Ellen, partly due to me having a 190E 2.3-16 at the time, and several bits of DTM Evo II posters, etc. We wrote to Ellen, using my rusty German, and about a week later Ellen wrote back the random 9 year old English girl with lengthy note in perfect English, enclosed a massive amount of photos/prints, odds n ends, and a little note from Ellen to include in her homework submission. She remains one of my favourite racing drivers of all time, regardless.

@@markusjuenemannI think I saw something recently on KZbin (memory is sketchy on it) where she is or was running an all woman race team? Either way, it was absolutely brilliant of her to have replied and given up her time for a totally random letter out of the blue from a country she never competed in, long after she retired. A real shame she didn't end up in a Calibra or 155 when the DTM went 4wd

No, in that race they were driving 190E 2.3-16 Sportline models since at that point even the first Evo-model wasn't even on the horizon.

Last summer we took my wifes 1991 190e 2.3 8v sportline manual on a road trip to see the kids. From SW France to South Wales and Scotland. Including a one day run from Dunbar to Southampton. 3000km in 5 days. One sidelight bulb blew. That was it. Otherwise faultless and comfortable. The car has 500000km on it as well, so not a pampered car, a daily driver.

My 190E is a 285hp n/a M103 six, yes the cam is a bit lumpy that's how I like it, but I've spent some years on the various club and owner forums and meets and you can't help but get brow beaten with a lot of 16v talk so I hope I'm recalling all this correctly. Here goes: The Evo engine isn't related to the vanilla 2.5-16 which replaced the 2.3-16 and neither of those engines were developed in partnership with Cosworth. In cliff notes the simple difference is the 7200rpm redline on the vanilla 16v in both capacities and 9500rpm redline only the Evo motors were specially developed for, with unique bore/stroke ratios to achieve the same 2.5 displacement as the vanilla 2nd gen 16v and numerous other basic engineering differences in the block. From what I can remember in track spec both Evo I and II ran at about 290bhp at 9000rpm but the II might have had some further changes for reliability improvements. Only in road trim as delivered before race prep the Evo I was quoted at 7000rpm untuned rating at around 197bhp and the Evo II was quoted at 8,000rpm for 230bhp, which was all just circumstantial they're basically the same motor. In road trim again if I recall correctly the indicated redline was 8000rpm on both, although with race prep and tune they redlined at 9500 and produced maximum power at 9000. Regular 16v in either displacement redlines at 7200 and that's a hard limit regardless of modification, it's actually the hard limit for any M102/M103/M104 which are all the same basic engine in 4 and 6 cyl but the single cams got an imposed limit of 6200 purely for their top end limitation in moving air, bottom end is the same in the twin cams and didn't change. The Evo is a completely different motor. The long explanation is Mercedes initially asked Cosworth to design a race worthy homologation engine proposal for the 190E based upon the M102 engine and the 2.3-16 is not what they came back with. The monster they handed Mercedes was so brutal the decision makers at the silver star declared it was just impossible to drive upon a public road at all, it was a firebreathing track demon designed to compete on even terms with turbos and big displacement using insane engine speeds in a naturally aspirated i4. The type of beast we're talking about is the sort of thing that would just shut down under 4000rpm if you weren't massaging the throttle and doesn't really have much in the way of control response unless doing more than 7000rpm. Mercedes said thanks but no thanks and went and designed the 2.3-16 themselves. Cosworth played no part in it. The one thing Mercedes borrowed from the Cosworth proposal was the head design, so technically it's a Mercedes engine with an arguably Cosworth head. The 2nd gen 2.5-16 is just the same motor with a longer stroke. It's still oversquare so the only functional difference is a lower rpm torque curve and the same upper envelope multiplying slightly more torque peak. By comparison the EVO motors have a stroke about halfway between the 2.3 and 2.5 with a much larger bore, so are very oversquare and then have a whole bunch of engineering features to support the design intention of spending all day at 9000rpm. They're pretty detuned in road going trim as delivered, since all the race prep and tune is expected to be done by individual teams, which probably helps their road manners quite a bit. In a nutshell the Evo motor in track prepped race trim is much closer to the original engine proposal Cosworth handed them for the first 2.3-16. It's not what you get in a 16v and not even what you get in an Evo, but the Evo can be race prepped to get there and the regular 16v can't with all the AMG track packs in the world.

@@izzy031096 No prob but my first draft response turned into a book so giving a lot of details isn't a short read. I'll have to give the cliff notes as I don't know what exactly you have in mind for budget and hassle, who's doing the work, how far you want to go, the whole plan from your end or how much of it is just up in the air. Full tear down replacement of all parts and accessories, hand machined and prepped for track days, block decked and overbored, head sent off, runners bead blasted and flow balanced, flat top pistons with closed chamber head, fabricated headers, 30/70 valve timing with 12.7mm cam lift and lash spacers (stock is 16/58 and 10mm), Franken-CIS standalone ECU upgrade but the Bosch system couldn't cope with the cam overlap since it works on vacuum so it wouldn't rev past 5700 and 210whp on the dyno, which is about 235 at the crank and at least thousand rpm shy of its peak output. It's getting a full EFI conversion as we speak using Megasquirt 2. The 285hp is the calculated rating from the engine builder who races an M110 in classic, since we were both surprised it actually turned 210whp at 5700 and way out of tune I'm secretly hoping it punches 300bhp all sorted out but it is strictly built for 285bhp with the machining and flow it has. Originally I was only hoping for about 270 crank hp, since you always go less than the calculated but the dyno figure just blew us away considering how badly it ran and we genuinely think it's going to be more. I'll know in a few more months. It was 230hp at 6000 with the 22/62 cam and stock CIS-E3 but an AMG M103 ignition module. The part more relevant to you is the early mod history. I originally just put a Dbilas 22/62 camshaft into the factory 2.6 because it was in very good shape at about 190,000 soft kms and was a Japanese export transferred to Australia, so has the 95 octane R16/1 ignition setup instead of the usual 89/91 octane for Australian imports, which is ideal for modding. I actually found a genuine AMG M103 ignition module in Belgium and put that in but it was only a marginal improvement and when we mapped it at the builder's shop it turns out there's only a moderate change in the advance curves from the stock factory one, waste of a thousand bucks. Playing around with the ignition on the KE-Jetronic system is way overrated, any mods needing a significant change are so dramatic the whole mechanical injection system gets thrown through a loop and you have to switch to EFI anyway. That's the point really, the CIS-E3 version of KE-Jetronic with its closed loop narrowband is actually capable of self-tuning for any moderate cam upgrade and power increase without any modification and whilst the spark may not be perfect after the changes it compensates so effectively on the fuel side that it runs perfectly and gives you the results you want at no additional cost. It's plug and play until you go wild. It's a fantastic stock injection system with limitless fuel feed at insane pressure and massive injectors. Just with exhaust gauge increase from the manifold back, deleting pre-cats as they're just particulate collectors to preserve cat life; the Dbilas 22/62 camshaft and a fresh servicing I had no problem outspeeding a modded VN Commodore 3.8 with the 2.6 and those put out 185hp stock, an easy 210 with cheap mods so that's really impressive and had to put the cammed 2.6 somewhere around 180-190hp. This cost next to nothing and is 150% bang for buck. What Mosselman did back in the 80s for their twin turbo low boost 2.6 was rig the cold start injector for boost enrichment and no other modification to any part of the 2.6 for 200hp on this kit. What AMG did as an independent tuner, which offered 300E and 190E performance kits as well as their flagship 3.2 Baby Hammer version, they just blueprinted the engine, chambered it, cammed it and swapped out the ignition module for 200hp n/a in the 2.6 and 215hp for the 3.0. Here is the beans. With no modification this period engine can handle a significant power increase on a mild warm over as plug and play up to about 200hp, doesn't matter if you can backyard turbo the worn 2.6 or swap in a junkyard 3.0 and cam it with some exhaust. It's all you have to do and you're looking at about 200hp. Anything over about 210 and you're looking at tens of thousands. Now there is another issue. You're going to spend tens of thousands like I did, marching the road towards 300 n/a ponies and you figure for all this money you might as well do a big turbo build and boost it for 400+ hp. The body hits a brick wall at about 240km/h. Now it only takes 160hp to hit 220km/h, but it takes 230hp to hit 260km/h and most of that is for the slow climb from 240. You can watch this on a KZbin video of a 420hp 190E with an Evo kit on the Autobahn, speedo whirls like a top to 240, brute force is needed to push past that and it crawls accelerating from 260 and that's with 420hp on boost, it finally makes it to 285 but it's a crawl. Now a W124 (300E) has no problem cruising past 280km/h on about 340 horses. And the 201 isn't exactly very stable north of 200 and that was with an Evo setup. It's very deceiving because the 190E really shines most of all at speeds between 100-200km/h which gives the definite impression this is a genuine Autobahn cruiser, but basically it wasn't really built to go much past about 240 not that you'd see more on a Group A DTM track anyway or a typical rally the model was originally designed for. The 124 is the high speed tourer, the 201 more a mid range compact for tighter tracks at lower average speeds. The way this factors in is cost-benefit ratio. Within the usable acceleration range of the body type there is really no difference between anything from about 270hp to 400+. All the additional power is wasted on the body type and would be better spent in a 124 chassis. You don't get to use it, down at the speeds the car can handle anything over about 340hp I'd say at an estimate would be a complete waste, you won't feel it, you won't experience it, and it won't be making you existentially quicker. At 80-140 the difference between 230hp in 1300kg and 520hp in 1800kg I can tell you is about 3 car lengths, to any onlookers one looks only marginally quicker than the other and that's about 50-grand difference in engine cost. This is what we're talking about once you push that big dollar button on exceeding the low cost mod threshold of around 210hp, anything past this is exponentially big dollars but the additional cost of big boost on top of a full build and EFI to push past 300hp is completely wasted. You wouldn't be doing it for effect, you'd be doing it just because you like boost. And I get that, my daily Saab is a Hirsch tuner with a full bar and boost is fun unto itself, but a big boost build isn't like a bolt on turbo and adds many more thousands to tens of thousands for more benefit on paper than anywhere else. You may go a completely different way, you may find completely different sentiments even when experiencing the same things, but these are all just things to be informed about.

Sharing information is one of the most important / best things we can do. It’s hard to find these level of information on these cars especially in the US. Thank you so much for this clip. It brought back so much of my childhood memories… Grewing up in Germany my parents had the first 190 in our neighborhood in 1982 and in the late 80ies, early 90ies I as a young lad watched every single DTM race on my small telly on the sunday afternoons. When Klaus Ludwig finally became champion it was as memorable to me as the German team winning the football world cup 1990 in Italy. Names like Bernd Schneider, Johny Cecotto, Frank Biela, Roberto Ravaglia and Kurt Tiim come into my mind again after watching this clip but I still can‘t remember the name of the lady with the chain- smoker‘s voice who did the comments on the races on German TV back in the days…

I have been driving a 85 W201 for a couple of years now. It's not fast, but what it can do surprisingly well is carrying speed through the corners without it getting uncomfortable like with the Audi 80 for example. It's a great driving experience, even if it's not a Evo or even a sportier model they are always worth a drive

Had the pleasure to drive the first evo2 you show at 0:25s. Portuguese car. Quite a nice story but long story short, got the keys handed by the owner and he said "follow me" then thought mountain roads that barely fit 2 cars side by side he went quick and I had to follow. Man until 2.500rpm car is dead but after that you hear the air suction and car is alive. Balance was insanely good. Will never forget the experience. Amazing I miss it and want one. Damn how much I miss it.

Peak DTM years. The next generation of cars, with Calibra and C-Class, were awesome but basically front engined sports prototypes where the entire front or rear of the car could be replace in minutes.

Back in the day there were still DTM races in my home town Diepholz) and I watched these on track. It was a lot of fun and because my dad worked for one of the sponsors we could get close to all cars and drivers. I even drew some of them during art lessons at school.

As someone who has raced an 190E 2.6 (the 6 cylinder version) I can honestly say they're surprisingly capable cars and really have a nice balance. I've used much more modern cars and they still don't quite hold up, I'm surprised because the W124 which I've also spent a lot of time with is absolutely dreadful. 🤣

The 2.3-16 was a better road car, the M3 a better race car so it depends where your interest is on which is "legendary". Stock and bought direct from the dealers for use on the road the Merc was the better car, the M3 was good, but you got a faster and better road car for less money if you just bought a 325i, if you had the money to build them up as race cars I'll give you that the M3 was much more successful.

I think there's something to be said about racing cars that look like pedestrian cars that were very, very heavily modified. I think that's part of the reason why the 190E and the E30 M3, among many other Group A cars, were so loved. Because people could go and buy a car off the showrooms that looked 90% like the race car (even if missing many of the "special" bits of said racecar), and live out their racing driver fantasies... Unfortunately, I feel that's not very easy to achieve anymore...

Very nice video! Loved the 190 in that time. Shortly after the DTM saga my dad owned a 190E and after the a 190E 2.6. Loved to drive in them. Even bought a model for him from Autoart in the color that he owned.

The Evo I and II were also seam welded from the factory, along with all the pick up points for cage and harnesses - they were proper homologation cars. Also worth mentioning that all the 16v 190Es had fully adjustable suspension geometry, and the really early 2.3-16s could be specified from new with your preferred lockup and slip rate on the LSD.

My first ride was an 88 190e 2.3 i bought out of the cars for parts section of the WantAd for $800 it only had 83k on it and a damaged tail light. Still so sad i sold it all those years ago

If you want to see a bonkers body kit look up the vl commodore ss group a sv. This was another homologation special built to satisfy the group a regs. Even more ridiculous looking than the one on the 190e

There was a famous interview on German tele with Walter Röhrl when he was ask why he is not driving DTM and his reply was that he received an offer to join DTM but in his mind it does not make sense to take part in a racing series that is less powerful than the car (Porsche 911 Turbo) that brings him to the racetrack ;-)

The 190e cosworths were actually designed with WRC in mind however Audi rendered this an impossible dream with the Quattro meaning Deutsche Touring Masters was the second choice for the cars chassis and engine combo.

I think it’s worth pointing out that this car was an even bigger deal than you imply. Mercedes Benz withdrew from motor racing after the huge crash at the 1955 Le Mans and until the 1989 season there was no direct factory support AT ALL. This car was Mercedes first competition car in 34 years! Worth also pointing out that Switzerland banned motor racing after the ‘55 Le Mans too. Until March 2023!!

If you are referring to the DTM, the 190 could only beat the BMW series 3, when BMW was the only opponent. When Alfa Romeo joined the competition with their 155, they demolished the Mercs. 1993 was a "one man" championship with Larini, and in 1994 Mercs had to play filthy to battle for the championship, in that infamous race where they bomb-dived into Nannini's 155 (like every kid keeps doing when playing a video game). Not a very victorious record for a car racing into its own national championship.

Love your videos, but one thing you have completely overlooked in term of the DTM was the race-by-race handicapping that was done in order to ensure competitiveness of all cars. Unrestricted, the E30 M3 Sport Evolution would have wiped the floor - more powerful and lighter than the 190E.
