1:13 ...just FALSE that Ford stopped using the V6 in the Mustang because “it performed so badly”. The entry level V6 was replaced with a Turbo 4 to comply with American EPA fleet fuel economy regulations. Yes the new Turbo 4 has higher horsepower than the old V6, but that older motor never “performed badly” nor was its replacement predicated on poor performance. In fact, a related V6 motor powers the Ford GT hypercar.
@Jeremiah_Gottwald4 жыл бұрын
Maybe I'm the one misunderstanding, but I thought he meant "performed" from a sales, public and critic perception standpoint. I don't know the sales figures, but it's easy to imagine people not falling in love with a v6 mustang.
@RadDadisRad4 жыл бұрын
True, the IMSA GT uses the 3.5 ecoboost that was built around the cyclone engine. The GT production car uses the truck based 3.5 ecoboost. The original 3.5 ecoboost that shares the same intake and exhaust ports as its port fuel injected NA 3.5/3.7 but only uses variable cam control on just the intakes and was found in the Taurus SHO, Flex, Explorer Sport, MKT and MKS starting in 2010. The race prepared unit had 2 high pressure fuel pumps to aid the engine in flowing more fuel because the series required ethanol fuel be used. The 3.5 ecoboost was revised and given variable cam control for intake and the exhaust cams and installed in the full size F150 pickup truck for the 2013 model year. This new motor is what is found in the production model GT, albeit more powerful with some hardware changes and software tuning.
@yanmustand4 жыл бұрын
I believed he said performed in terms of sale
@blueridge89923 жыл бұрын
Jeremiah Gottwald that’s not true either. The V6 outsold the Ecoboost in the year that they overlapped in the Mustang. I actually don’t think the reason for discontinuation was mpg or sales. The 3.7L was replaced by a couple smaller NA V6s that are only used in the F150. Those new V6s were designed from the start to be truck specific motors and just don’t have the performance characteristics for a Mustang. The 3.7 didn’t exist in any other vehicle after the F150 and Mustang so when the F150 swapped to the new V6s it didn’t make sense to keep manufacturing the 3.7 for just one application when Ford could use the new 2.3 as the Mustang’s base motor instead.

To say that Ford discontinued the V6 because it performed badly is a lie. The V6 was handicapped by Ford in order to drive sales of the Ecoboost 4 banger. The 3.7 was a perfect performer at 305hp on 87 octane getting 30 mpg. The ecoboost makes 310 only on 93 octane, and according to 3rd party testing the 3.7 picks up at least 7hp on 93 octane as well giving it 312hp. With a little bit of boost the 3.7 makes power that would have a ecoboost mustang blowing head gaskets. 6 psi on a 3.7 = 600hp
