Okay, besides of course our mutual love for the Lord Jesus Christ and His hot Gospel 🔥 Anyway, where was I? Right, Locke had a choke hold on Rousseau because Rousseau begins all his reasonings, I mean ravings, with the presupp that man is basically good. I recall reading it furiously in my state room and enjoyed it immensely. Though it's incomplete, it's absolutely worth reading. It'll take some of the blinders off to view "Conservatism" aright, understanding how much of the seeming impulses toward "liberty" are rather urges toward license and equally corrupt in its motivations as Leftism.

Our problem is we think we are entirely separate and independent of those who came before us. We are a current manifestation of our ancestors and the culture our ancestors developed. We don’t get to choose whether we enter the social covenants they entered. Our ancestors made that choice for us - whether we are taking about the founding fathers or Adam and Eve. We can not break from what has come before but we can influence the direction of the future and our descendents.

Deneen titled the book 'Why Liberalism Failed', not 'Why Secularism Failed', because the thesis of the book is that the classical liberalism Doug unabashedly praises is the cause of clownworld, but he curiously fails to engage with any of the author's arguments about why that may be the case. Secularism in fact could be not the result of Darwinism, but the need for people greatly disconnected from traditional sources of culture, faith, and meaning to arrive at consensus. Not sure if Doug is mistakenly missing the point of the book, or intentionally doing so. His statement that a truly liberal order is only possible on a basis of Christian nationalism also doesn't make much sense. Does any Christian nationalist want to tolerate bespoke sexualities? Porn? Drug use? Such a Christian nationalism isn't worthy of the name. I do heartily agree we need a strong, vigorous Christendom, but it looks like it will be forged in the fires of persecution.

I think Doug is being too dismissive of the social contract. It is something that instantiates every time a group of individuals get together and enter into an agreement on laws and how those laws will be enforced. The idea of social contract theory is a generalization that describes the all the particular occasions when this happens. This it is not a myth, but a generalization based on species of occurrences.

Ok, that didn’t make sense. How can you say it’s ok to “sin” or go against the social contract simply because none of us ever signed one, thus making it nonexistent; and at the same time claim that a sin against a contract with God is the same as a signature of adherence?
@kaylar3197 Жыл бұрын
Perhaps you’re confused because in the first instance he is talking about what philosophers call the social contract - which is nonexistent - this one, he says, is not binding on us, and to break it would not be sin. In the second instance he is describing the Creation covenant which he says *could be described as a social contract* which is most definitely real, and which we prove that we are subject to by sinning. Clear as mud? I tried.

actually there's been two resurrections from the dead, lazarus and jesus :P I know I know, jesus is responsible for both anyways as much as I enjoy doug wilson I'm not a christian, AFAIK god entered my life through synchronicity and tutored me on somewhat christian but not entirely christian views, and I'm still trying to figure an ideal that satisfies biblical readings (not always literally) with darwinian and lockean views of the world (who still make sense to me to this day on many levels) I don't know why god chose to communicate with me via signs but I'm hoping to have a positive impact faithfully as for what I am, one friend mentioned about 20 years ago that I was a skeptic deist in the future, skeptic because I'd believe it when I saw it, and deist because I believe in god, christianity especially CS lewis's mere christianity appeals to me on some metaphysical grounds, but other parts don't work for me and I trust the scientific process as its understood for the last 250 years barring the last 5-7 also I believe in jesus as a prophet, first amongst equals but still a prophet, and I don't believe in mohammed (had sex with a 9 year old, probably not prophet behaviour), but I believe in jesus sacrifice as a vital and massive turning point in human history and view that barring what I consider my best faith interpretation of god's plans for me or others, if he does indeed communicate with me, that christianity is the best religion there is I'm also willing to believe that my own faith in god might not be the best for society as a whole interpretively however, a number of signs from god that made me question certain topics and come to some conclusions about his nature were talked about by the bible and christians in videos I watched after I made my decisions on the topics, and they seem to fall in line somewhat one distinction I make on hell is that I don't believe it's permanent, but it is indefinite, it's possible to repent after death, but the process for redemption is slower and more extreme than doing so in life, that every soul can be redeemed if they're willing to repent, but also that the souls of the "eternally damned" are made up of those who refuse to repent even after god makes it plain and clear to them after death what they did wrong
@GreatGatling Жыл бұрын
You also need to consider a powerful statement made by one of the prophets of Israel that the nations have their gods but God - YHWH - is the king and God of Israel.
