When you were talking about your definition of success, you had said something along the lines of "not to get philosophical" however on the contrary in my opinion I think your words are quite therapeutic and motivating. I recently discovered your channel and watch it just as much for the commentary as I do for the caving content. I also learned from a young age that you don't live by other's definition of success, you live by your own definition. One other thing I wanted to add, it quite literally blows my mind how fast you guises shirts get shredded I mean you must go through caving clothes constantly. How do you guys afford that? I would guess you probably make use of the Goodwill and thrift shops. Anyways thanks for the content I love it!

I have never seen another human within miles of any of these caves. It seems like it would be interesting to see someone but the reality is, very few people are doing this. Even hardcore cavers don't go through these Crawley ones. Even hiking, the only people I see are hunters or mushroom pickers. Sometimes rock climbers in the limestone areas. In order to see other cavers you have to go through a highly public cave. And that's a good place to meet cool cavers but mostly that's just citizens walking through tourist caves. For cavers to make friends we join caving groups and then we go to caves together. You'll see some of that on this channel. Random people I'm gaving with from our caving group.

@7:50 the crack in the ceiling gives me the heebie jeebies. Isn’t it theoretically possible that cave passages, especially crawls like this, could experience wear & stress over time from cavers going through? Sort of like how hiking trails wear down over time? Those thoughts scare me as I watch 😂. I wish one day you discover an ancient treasure in some undiscovered section of a cave. I also think that it would be epic if you had a cable tv show and you travelled around the world exploring historic cave systems. The Grand Canyon, Egypt, Greece, Turkey, somewhere in Patagonia, Iceland, Oh yeah that would be a great show!
@EvenDarker
@EvenDarker Жыл бұрын
Probably not, especially considering cavers don't go through. Most of the caves you see us in are either never explored or perhaps explored by 4 or 5 people at the most. Maybe 10 people have been in this cave. Moreover, this isn't the kind of rock that collapses. Lava rock hardens quite a bit as it cools and it takes thousands of years to crumble away. This lava bed is relatively new at just a few thousand years old.

Love your videos! I’m curious about the air quality though. When I worked for city sewers, we always had to monitor (specifically the levels of oxygen) at all times when going below ground. Do you have to do that as well? Or do caves naturally have their own oxygen supply ecosystem going on?
@EvenDarker
@EvenDarker 2 жыл бұрын
Well that sounds rough. For sure the air here is better than the sewers! We do have oxygen gear and use it if necessary for testing. But it is rarely necessary as most caves do supply their own air. Caves, having a constant temperature we'll breathe air in-and-out because of the changing outside air temperature. So they work like a giant lung breathing fresh air in. Some caves get stale, some caves have a lot of bat poop, on rare occasions methane deposits. But we have oxygen testers for that.

Welcome to the dark frontier. Fortunately, we aren't living for subs or views. We enjoy caving and making videos. We're glad you're watching! Beyond that, we have no concerns.

You can not move up or down or turn around or go backwards. If you really thought about this coffin that you're crawling through you'd panic. If there was an earthquake you'd die fast. If it didn't open up you'd be screwed. Man I don't know if that's bravery or stupidity.

This channel has pretty much awoken some need for me to explore the underground, I’ve always been interested in things like the Paris catacombs and I even explored a little drain pipe about 2-3 feet wide not terribly tight but it was fun just to say I went down that dark hole nobody else is willing to go down and I had fun, and I know there is a cool little room in the middle of it, I’m now looking for a cave but one with maybe at the smallest a 2 foot squeeze, I’m still a beginner but this is definitely something you’ve made me want to do.

Cool. We like to encourage, if not outdoor life, than certainly healthy living. Nobody's going to get to their end of the life and which they spent more time inside playing games.

@@EvenDarker I think I might... I love game nights lol. When I find myself out on hikes or dog walks with friends I'm always thinking "We could be playing Catan right now..." I get more than enough excitement from watching your videos, though. I do find it fascinating, I'm just not the kind of person that enjoys taking life risks for fun. About the most risky activity I partake in is boating and fishing haha. But some people are just homebodies. We're satisfied by seeing the sights through the lens of others, like you, and don't feel that need to do it ourselves. The only compulsion I feel to travel has nothing to do with sightseeing, but trying local cuisines in other countries. And if I could do that from home that'd definitely be how I'd do it.

Tight restrictive caves and now potentially running into crazy, blood thirsty paddington bears 😮😮😮. I watch your videos for therapy to improve my claustrophobia (my brother trapped me as a young child in a sleeping bag where the zip in those days were only on the outside. The fact you constantly talk such interesting stuff, is the only reason I can watch it. I would or could never do this, as I would be a dangerous element to have underground. Have you ever had to deal with someone in full panic blocking your only way out?

Ha someone noticed! Good catch. It's just a piece of tape that was placed there... as a reference for when the map is created. Tape is placed at certain intervals and then a device, usually a laser is directed from point to point. Someone began mapping this cave but gave up.

Am i crazy or is that Gold at 1:39 , 2:08 ??
@EvenDarker
@EvenDarker 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe both? It's not gold. There's a lot of rocks that have strange coloration and also glow when they are wet. * I checked the time stamps and it is pretty gold! Its smooth lava. Which gives it the right texture and the chemicals turn it yellow.

Having watched a good portion of your videos, I'll say this: They are the most enjoyable caving videos I know, because the feel genuine, carefully done, and unique. After forcing myself through the first ones (as a somewhat claustrophobic person), I've come to enjoy everything you put out, as it relaxes me after long days as a parent. Thank you for that!

Thank you! You have lots of caves. These caves aren't necessarily near our house. We generally Drive 2 hours for caving and we consider that close. If you drive 2 hours you'll have more caves in one small area than we have into three states surrounding us. You live in one of the most cave rich areas of the entire world. Big caves. Long caves. Extraordinarily beautiful caves Good luck!
