One of Lisa Su's strength is her ability to intensely focus on what strengths AMD has and iterate on that ruthlessly, to build up an unassailable position of strength, while keeping other less leading aspects still warm. Now that she has placed in motion the unstoppable steamroller that is AMD's CPUs, I believe the next 5 years she's going to do the same with Radeon's CDNA. Oh RDNA won't be abandoned; any breakthrough in CDNA that's applicable to RDNA will definitely make it to RDNA, but her sights are squarely to launch a challenge to Nvidia's current lead in AI-oriented GPGPUs. Lisa Su is my hero.

I met her once...well I say met...I was at her key note at a tech conference and afterwards I was waiting to use the bathroom bc it was occupied Lisa walked out of the bathroom and I was like "hey you're..." but she just marched right by like I wasn't even there. I had to pee to bad to follow so I rushed into the bathroom to try and get my business done and then try and meet her. But when I went into the bathroom someone had taken the most fowl dump I ever encountered in my life. I don't mean like they didn't flush...but the smell was absolutely horrid, I swear my nose had nerve damage for like a few hours afterward. IDK...might not have been her that did the deed...could have been the person before...but if it was her I think she might have intestinal issues or like diet issues or something. Anyway...tried to track her down as soon I tinkled...but she was gone...didn't see her again before I left later.

Getting the Console gaming business was critical to getting AMD back. The Zen Architecture was probably a direct result of investment from Microsoft and Sony for the Xbox and PlayStation. After the Zen Architecture was the chiplet design which with the help of consistent manufacturing from TSMC made them catch up to Intel. AMD on TSMC 7nm was a game changer as Intel was stuck in 14nm for far too long.
@PanduPoluan Жыл бұрын
Well, Zen was already in design separately from console CPUs. The reason why Sony and Microsoft invested in AMD was because AMD was willing to do custom chip designs for them, unlike other CPU makers who tend to have a "take it or leave it" mentality. This had led to Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 to each have their breakthrough tech. The money from Microsoft and Sony not only helped keeping AMD afloat, there's enough to also do some focused R&D. Which Dr. Su had wisely directed into the unstoppable juggernaut that is the Zen lineup.
@EnochGitongaKimathi Жыл бұрын
@@PanduPoluan AMD won design wins from both the PlayStation 4(2013) and Xbox One(2013) which both used AMD's Jaguar CPUs. This revenue was critical for AMD to secure advanced process node manufacturing from TSMC and fund R&D. Secondly the specs from the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 gaming consoles moving forward were becoming very similar to a PC, which was a huge advantage for AMD since only one architecture (e.g Zen) that could scale across Gaming Consoles, PCs and Servers was needed. I believe Lisa Su was critical in securing the Gaming console business from both Sony and Microsoft as Senior VP at AMD from 2012.

I appreciate Dr. Lisa and Forbes for this piece. My only criticism is that I hope AMD pushes out more marketing campaigns featuring her in order to establish her as a more recognized household name among her peers. I noticed that she deferred the business and personnel restructuring comments to another gentleman and solely focused on the tech. It would have been insightful to hear from her how she took on the failing company culture and turned it around. Including that would have gave her a more rounded representation of a CEO and not as a CTO.

Lisa, Mark and Raja really turned AMD around (In that order). The issue with breaking into AI is that Nvidia has spent years investing in CUDA, especially at the university level. Its hard to be a significant player when for the last decade or so, all the graduates coming into the market are familiar with only one option, and that option is made by your competitor. I'm sure Dr Sue will do a great job even with this uphill battle, because if im not mistaken AMD was trading at about $2 when she took over.

Without AMD intel would have had absolute monopoly and they were already price gouging customers with lower tech and higher prices since 2008 until 2015 when AMD made a comeback. That Intel used unethical methods of bribing OEM's to crush AMD seems to be forgotten. Intel needs to be punished for anti-competitive behavior. We already have Big Tech monopolies and we don't want another one in hardware which will make Personal computers expensive.

@Lukas_Miglioranza Жыл бұрын
She's like the embodiment of the American Dream, proof that it's still a possible reality! But above all, my liquid cooled AMD is a shotgun blast and the latest generations of platforms and graphic cards are phenomenal! In the field of "small" computers, those for mere mortals, which are the only planets I know a little bit, in an AMD galaxy far beyond my understanding, the architecture introduced in the 7000 graphic cards is a very important challenge that will severely determine the future of the sector, and deserves much more media attention, but the complexity is great and this does not always help easy communication. However, the transformation in continuity of the RDNA series, from 1 to 3, is both a frontier and a safe place in method and substance, and it's really interesting. In small processors, the two channels, some, like me, struggle to understand the meaning of the new heat sinks, even if with a liquid 5950x I'm certainly not in emergency! It is precisely a cultural interest, despite the growth in performance is there and it is possible for customers to have a wider choice in every sense. From the 3950x to the 5950x the reduction of ccds number and the consequent loss of scalability was balanced with renowned computing power and energy management, while simulators and more demanding applications seem to have benefited from the 8 core ccds, and the 5950x was just the crown on a legendary platform, a processor of superior class in multitask and multithread, capable of competing with workstations like never before, in the same time improved even in videogames, elastic and versatile like never before, with temperature management from heaven on earth. AM5 is a huge technological leap with transfer speeds doubled once again, and keeping temperatures down could not be a topic. While the companies that deal with PC cooling are moving too slowly (something expressly for ddr5 Rams does not yet exist, and there are still products on the showcase whose physical compatibility with ddr4 is still uncertain! The heatsinks do not fit!), it seems that the processor registers and the cache memory are the other node of the dispute: some applications would like less, others more, and bringing all the needs together in a single processor is not easy: who knows; maybe in the near future the artificial intelligence could do something about!
