I use 7 different Thiers-Issard 5/8 straight razors (I know 3 of them have boxwood scales). I use Jojoba oil on my face the moment I step out of the shower (so the hair doesn't toughen back up by drying), then I use whichever shaving gel or cream is closest on top and give my razor a quick pass on both sides over the strop, rinse it off and shave. When done I make sure there's nothing left on the blade then dry and strop it 10x, 9x, 8x, 7x, 6x, 5x, 4x, 3x per side. I can't use the cartridge razors because they far too quickly become blocked up with hairs and they dull within 3 uses. You asked!

@cheapaudioman Have had Gen 1 Ares II (aka Enyo) for 18 months. I can confirm that EXCELLENT support is available for Denafrips in TX. (Shout out to Alvin!) STRONG SUGGESTION: If you have the ability feed the Ares with COAX or Toslink, try them instead of USB. In my ~$10,000 primary 2.2 system, I strongly preferred COAX over USB. It just sounded better. (And by leaving both inputs connected to the Ares, it is straightforward to A/B them.)
@medonk12rs10 ай бұрын
... depends on the streamer / feeding device. Had the Ares II, now Venus II, both perform(ed) best when fed via USB. Coax SPDIF seconds, TOSlink worst. Even better: Insert a DDC into the chain. Still, even the Gaia DDC likes being fed by USB best, that is in my system, of course.

So, I dived in and bought one and was very surprised that a local guy here in Australia (The Dacman) hand delivered it to me within a day. It seems that the Ares 12-1 has improved over the Ares II? But, one of the reasons I went from the Ares II to the Geshelli J2 AMK 4493 (and now the J2S AKM 4499) is the bass quality. And with the big Sparkos (SS2590 dual mono DIP8 unit) and LPS, the J2S also is better in the soundstage openness, layering and detail, in my system and in my opinion. The lack of a second coax input would be an issue for me, as well - I listen to my Node 2i and my Audiolab CD transport, both with coax connections. I like the more "free-form" aspects of this video, by the way. Seeing components on the rack in the system, etc is useful I think.

@@Simon_Hawkshaw my Geshelli J2S AKM 4499EX with the big Sparkos dual mono DIP8 in the RCA socket, and a linear power supply is my personal reference. I have not heard the Ares 12-1, but based on Randy's review (and A British Audiophile), it would probably not satisfy my need for the best bass quality. This is what lead me to my first J2, and now I have everything else, too. I have a Geshelli Dayzee reserved, though - the stock version was even better, when I heard it on my speakers at CAF last year. Price for that is going to be ~$1300; with eight (!) OPA1655 op-amps. I will be upgrading it with eight of the big Sparkos SS2509 (each a single module) op-amps.

So, both your and the British Audiophile opinions are driving me towards getting a Denafrips over another SMSL. It's funny, i think i may have replied to one of your comments before - and i rarely comment on people's comments. Anyway, just wanted to mention, it also depends on the rest of your system. And there are variables within that as well, e.g., if your system is not that resolving in the first place, you may not notice much of a difference between similar DACs... and then it may just come down to extras and whether it has a remote control or not...In the end, for me, it usually comes down to buying two or three components, auditioning, and returning all but one - or buying one and deciding if I'm happy with it. Then the cycle eventually starts all over when i want more out of my system. ;) Well, i know this is unsolicited, but hopefully it was slightly more helpful than slightly more confusing. - Cheers

Have a feeling that if you’re able to try the Denafrips Arce streamer connected via I2S to the Ares 12th-1 you might have another unexpected revelation. Naming jokes aside, the Arce is a bit of a sleeping giant from a source standpoint (especially for anyone who primarily uses Roon, which this is focused) at the moment and a truly amazing pairing with the Ares. Even factoring in a Denafrips DDC inclusion, the level of punch/clarity/balance/refinement that I gained going from a Zen Stream>USB>Iris DDC>I2S>Ares 12th and then to the Arce>I2S>Ares 12th was more than I hoped for or expected.

This is one of the new R2R DACs. The classic R2R DACS were actually 14 bit with great soundstage. They were limited in detail because they use resistors of different values and the precison of the resistors limited the resolution of the DAC. They were great with CDs. The new ones with tighter tolerance of the resistors allow more bits of detail and now match other DACs for detail with an open airy R2R sound. A DAC 1321 is a 450USD example pf the new R2R DACs a;though the Ares 12.1 is better yet,

New generation of posters on audio equipment. In my day, Stereophile was the main source for equipment reviews, and the Absolute Sound although that was more for ultra-pricey stuff. I spent 17 years listening to a setup with a Proceed PDT3 transport (pre-owned), an Audio Alchemy DTI Pro (pre-owned), and an MSB Link Dac with the Burr-Brown chip. Sounded pretty good! IT was a weird combination of components, with the highest end being the transport Which supported Robert Harley's claim that the transport is the most important part of the chain. At least I eradicated that scourge Jitter. And super dynamic. Now I do have a Denafrips Pontus and... some streamer. It's good. But is it better than my old system? More compelling? Hmm. Hard to say. IN the end, you judge with your ears and your feelings. In the end, all the analysis doesn't matter, it's what you keep in your own system and what you want to listen to night after night. If you find it hard to stop listening to the track that's playing, that's a good sign. If you rush from one track to the next, one CD to the next, that's a bad sign. It should be hard for you to tear yourself away from the current track. That's the simplest way to judge if you like your setup. Good luck to you

I had wondered about how you had gone from talking about the original Denafrips Ares as completely changing your musical perspective, and letting you hear things, you’d never heard before to not mentioning it almost ever again after you reviewed the Geshelli J2.

Never heard of pimento cheese before. Being an audiophile gets you in to contact with great food.

Randy, when are you going to visit Jay's audio lab? It is obvious to me that both extreme in the hifi youtube world need to meet! You must experience the ultra high end to calibrate yourself and put everything in perspective. It would be mega interesting for you to meet Jay!!!

I just subscribed. I just listened to that Korn song on Apple Music lossless format. Cayin Tube amp into HD650’s and That’s def not what I would consider an audiophile song. It’s all very flat and hard unnatural left right separation. Man if you think that song is good then you have a whole world of sound in front of you to discover. 😊

Thanks for that feedback. I’ll have to find better music that adheres to higher standards.

Enjoying the video and your showing the connection process, however I paused at 6:45 to let you know it was the first time " DAC" was spoken in your video. I kinda figured it was a DAC, but DAC was not in the title of the video or your description (please let me know if I overlooked it). I would have found it helpful knowing with certainty what the pretty piece of audio gear actually was from the get go. (Journalism 101: Don't bury the lead). Thanks for listening and for the content you provide!

How does it compare to geshelli labs with sparkos upgrade

I don’t understand the contemporary preference for a metal box that looks like a cheap early 2000s dvd player over a beautiful wood cabinet.

I'm just amazed that your Target store doesn't keep razors and other personal grooming items locked up behind plexiglas (like they do here around the Puget Sound area).
