I miss my Boss Waza TAE. I really loved it. Had to sell. Would love to get another someday. I ran it through a Mesa Dual Recto and Mesa cab. It's great for making your own IR's. The UA OX box is really good as well. But, the TAE has way more versatility. Thanks for representing the TAE. The TAE is easy for getting a wall of sound stereo image by blending different cabs. Thanks for the video.

Direct all day. I only track DI first, run to an amp for zero latency and use a plugin to hear back. Then reamp once the take is as good as possible. Love it.

I have one of these on order, but my primary intended use will be to interface between my amp and the PA at gigs. We are halfway between worlds where all your sound came from the stage and all your sound comes from the PA, either of which I can do without needing this. But for some venues that have not heard of a thing called "center fill," I need some stage sound so that the folks pressed up against the stage don't tell me they could not hear my guitar at all (since the PA mains are behind and above them!). I need to be able to crank my amp up to 6 for good sound, and still have a relatively low level of volume coming from one or more cabs on stage for center fill. I think this will be magic for that, or at least I hope it will be!

@7:00 correction if I may... the idea behind this feature is to allow you to take a tiny amp like a vintage 50/60's tube Fender Champ and take it up on stage... run it through this and have it amplify it loud enough to be used in a club setting. Alternatively DON'T use the internal WAZA 100W amp but use that vintage Champ with the Waza to get the Champ's tone out to FOH amplification. My understanding anyway. I've got one but massively under-use it mostly just for at-home power-soak to let me get my tube amps 'loud' full-throttle tones scaled down to fam-friendly dB's.

Really cool this information! Currently I'm trying to get a boss katana in my DAW. I've already made recordings on my Windows PC via USB and can only say that the recordings actually sound like the Katanta directly from the loudspeaker, Boss did a great job there. Unfortunately on a Windows PC without the ASIO4All driver I can only use one interface at a time and unfortunately the Katana on the way back allows the signal to run through the entire signal chain. Unfortunately, the way back is not possible and without ASIO4ALL I always have to change the audio interface after the recording. Next I will test the line out on the amp for recording and finally do a pre-amp recording with mics. Since I live in a rented apartment, I have to use the lowest level on the amp for the microphone recording, whether that still sounds good is questionable. But if the line out works well, I might not need the WAZA amp expander. I can also record my amps via a Grossman ISO box, but the result has not been particularly satisfactory so far.

I do a mix of amp sims and real amp into loadbox. The latter is more fun and responsive to play, but the plugins are just so convenient. In a mix they both work just fine. Either way I always get a DI just in case I wanna change things later. Being able to change IR's on a real amp is a game changer though, makes them a lot more versatile since the IR has such a big effect on the tone.

I have had this and the OX for a few years now. Do not even come close to utilizing them to their full potential. This video did help a lot. I lean more towards the Boss over the OX. BUT, as of right now, the OX feels better in bass rig situations. With that I am running a very old Marshall Super bass into 15" and 12" speakers. So what I am going for is clean when played lightly or volume rolled back and then hairy sludge when blasting away. The OX out of the box worked better on that. After this video though I should revisit that with the Boss.

Tbh for that kind quite distorted tone that heavily rely on close-micing, I think most loadboxes that are good enough will offer a similar sound than a miced up cab. The only annoying thing that requires a bit more tweaking to emulate is when trying to innovate with cab/dual cab and room mic placement for guitars. For straight close-mic, deffo easy to replace imho. But yeah when space is limited, the current line of loadboxes are amazing.

Great video. That hollow body PRS looks and sounds really cool. I use a Quad Cortex. I live in a small apartment where even the 0.1w setting on my Marshall DSL1 is too loud a lot of the time (or my Boss Katana 0.5w setting)... Direct recording is the only way for me. If I plug the Marshall into the QC, I use the cab simulation from the QC. Great advice about the double tracking. Thanks

I'm in the same boat as you - needed to be able to record guitars direct without having to run speakers in my studio space. I picked up a UA Ox last week and it is a game changer for me. I looked at the Boss too. Reasons I didn't go with it were that the room wasn't adjustable and I like being able to mix and match mics. I totally get why you chose the Boss for your particular workflow though. I also like that the Ox limits me somewhat as far as not having to feel like I have to go down a rabbit hole with different IR's, etc. I basically want to create a preset rig for each of my 5 tube amps and then the 6th one will be more of a catch-all ambient setup. I also picked up an amp switcher by a small company called de Lisle - definitely check them out as I not only can switch between my rigs in the OX now, but I can switch through all my amps without having to re-patch anything too.

It can be an incredible piece of gear for live music too (set your amp as you like no matter the size of the stage, give an XLR to the PA guy, fine dial your volume for monitoring, et voilà) It's just too pricey for me, I'm not a professionnal and I'm looking for a 500€ budget cap like the TwoNotes captor X

My questions are A) does the USB go directly into the DAW --AND ALSO-- B) does it capture the characteristics of individual amplifiers doing so assuming it does. This is what I would hope for as then I could take my Marshall or Orange or Krank etc and plug them into it for different tone colorings during recording sessions. Marshall is awesome but for clean warm tones there is an Orange amp that is super cool but that is it's only great tone. Using this I could potentially use any tube amp to record directly via USB if it does these two things.

@@ColtCapperrune The variable reactive load on the tube expander is the main issue. I am not a professional. From what I gather from listening to mainstream amp builders and others that with the tube expander having that variable reactive load changes that reaction the speaker and amp normally have that may cause abnormal wear on your amp’s transformers. For me I have an original 1972 50-watt Marshall head I have owned since 1984-85 and no way was I going to just plug any load resistor into my amp without knowing what may happen. So, I went on the search for the safest way to attenuate my amp by watching many videos and by asking many questions. I wanted that Boss Tube Expander when it came out, but many pointed out that issue and concern. The two devices that keep coming up were the Fryette Power Station and the Suhr reactive load for the safest to use on your amps. Of course, that is my opinion, but I strongly suggest you do some research. I brought this to your attention because I was concerned.

BOSS should have added Bluetooth and an Android/iOS app. This device was supposed to be designed to cater to live rigs, and having to carry around a laptop to turn on and off the Fletcher-Munson curve, edit your effects, and load IR's is a TOTAL buzz kill. If not adding this, they should have included a full interface on the device itself. The FX loop is also total crap. It sounds really bad. I've never heard such a bad FX loop. Not only that, the return is NOT STEREO! They should have also added a stereo power amp option or expansion capability. Maybe spdif.. Maybe some more digital interface options. The solid state power amp makes you amp sound solid state/or digital through your cab. I still used it with a 5150 block, but my Stealth 50 can get pretty quiet and still sounds good, so I just skipped using a soak of any kind, not only because of tone (high gain amps get most of their tone from the preamp anyway), but because... Also, don't forget that if you use this thing for high gain, be sure to stand at least 10 ft away from it, because the magnetic field is quite massive and will cause feedback if your guitars pickups are any closer to it. Look it up. There are threads about it with several people experiencing the problem. Personally, I put mine on the floor, behind my cab, or I can't get anywhere near my head without super squeelies! Now if you are recording clean tones or low gain crunch, which seems to be most of what you're doing these days, the feedback might not be an issue for you. *For the next comments, take them with a grain of salt, because there may be some bias in the comparisons.* Finally, this is in a high gain application, but Keith Merrow compared his Two Notes Studio vs his friend's Waza TAE with the same IR's and the Two Notes demolished the Waza. YMMV I guess with this... Could have been user error. Also, as disclaimer, I haven't compared them myself. Oh yeah I almost forgot, but in all his tests, his Randall is cab still sounded best, the Kemper profile of that sounded second best, and every other modeler, and I believe the Two Notes solution were kind of far behind. This might just be the way he's using them though... Like he honed in one specific tone, and that's how things work out for him. He has several amps, but sticks to his original rig despite having Revv, OMEGA, etc etc.. Whatever the case... It's time BOSS updated this thing!!!

It comes with a a USB port. I go right into my MacBook and Logic recognizes it as an input/ibterface seamlessly.

Can you record with the line out and play/listen through a speaker cab at the same time?

As others said, you could just make an IR of your speaker. multiple IRs even.

Has anyone recorded direct from the Tae to a 4 track Tascam? Do you run the xlr out of the FOH or the R/L line outs from the Waza?

But ... which DI input do you use to track unprocessed guitar for plan B (reamping, simpler editing)?
@ColtCapperrune

I never record DI guitars, I’m a big fan of committing to a tone and living with it
@demondrive147
@demondrive147 Жыл бұрын
@@ColtCapperrune I agree, even with ampsimps I rarely tweak tone postfactum, but how about editing busy parts? With DI it's much simpler to cut and move on two tracks simultaneously, because you actually see the transient
@ColtCapperrune
@ColtCapperrune Жыл бұрын
If I’m doing some seriously heavy, complicated guitar stuff, and I’m not the one playing it, I will occasionally record the DI just for editing as you mentioned. But that’s a pretty small percentage of my work these days.

You better not be foreshadowing an Atmos upgrade, for every one person that sets that up in their home, there's a thousand who couldn't give a crap.

You might want to look through these comments lol. Also, not that I’m excited about this happening, but we are all going to have to give a crap. By every measure I can look at, and every conversation I’ve had with big industry players, we are all going to have to deal with it sooner or later. You already will not get play listed on Apple Music without your mix being in Atmos.

Did you try the Quad Cortex or the new Tonex ??
@ColtCapperrune
@ColtCapperrune Жыл бұрын
I did not try either of those, in my experience you really need a reactive load box to plug the amplifier into in order to get the correct feel of the guitar. Lots of those options sound decent, but the ones I have tried don’t feel authentic to me.

Be aware that some very reputable and knowledgeable tube amp aficionados have serious reservations about the Boss unit and the design of its load box (ie. danger of damaging your amp)
