I really hope you make a monster skill tree or just a collection of abilities that cost points in the same manner as a player character so that you can create "leveled" monsters. Because sure, you can use the combat and rp skill trees for more humanoid creatures like Orcs, Kobolds, and Gnolls (and maybe even some more strange ones like giants) But what about oozes, elementals or the almighty dragons! Just an idea, I think it'd be super cool.

I play BRP and other games that were class less and level less. In Vampire I just ate a neighbor of the right clan and absorbed thier soul, opening up my ability to invest the xp to buy the power later. In Runequest I just started praying to a God that had the runemagic that I wanted, sacrificed the point of power to aquire it. In Call of Cthulhu, I figured that one of the characters were going to need mechanical engineering so My guy just took a semester class in it to get a skill roll. In Taveller we didn't have anyone that knew had to use explosives, so one our characters made sure to study for the next couple of jumps to get enough study periods to check to learn Explosives skill.

It also makes me want to build a tree for Lairs, monsters, familiars, spell crafting, and magic weapons/armor. Hell even a vehicle tree would be awesome. Maybe using the vehicles from avernus and spell jammer as a jumping off point. Im REALLY liking these classes skill trees, but there are some things that have bothered me. 1. Hit points, I don't really like the fact that that characters just get a flat 5 + con per level (while also being able to get it more than once) I personally think that you should only be able to get the hp node only once a level, and you can choose between a d6 (0 points) a d8 (1 point) and a d10 (2 points) That way characters can still feel beefy or weak, and there's still randomness to this game about rolling dice, you can still keep the "you can take average" rule instead of rolling if that's what you want as well. 2. This isn't really something I don't like with the system, but rather a suggestion, not all feats are made equal, I think with this system, different feats should cost more or less instead of all of them costing 4. As an example, lets take Skilled (which let's you gain proficiency in any 3 skills or tools) would cost 4 points to take the feat, but during character creation each skill / tool costs only one point, so your character could technically get 8. Skilled, should only take 3 points.
@TheUglyGoblin22 күн бұрын
Mmm fair notes! As for hp, the fact that you need to purchase it is what balances the game. You’ll find that more people forgo it Han actually taking it
@musicman926322 күн бұрын

@@musicman9263 aw thank you so much haha funnily enough I'd be the same :P But lossa people just want cool powerful abilities early xD
@Shalakor20 күн бұрын
1. An increase of a single die size just would not be worth a whole point each. If wishing to follow the "one Hit Die per level that determines max HP" model, a more fair way to go about it would be something like this: 0 points is actually lower than the lowest class leveling, gaining 1d4(average 3, 4 if first level)+Con mod, while spending 1 point maximizes what class leveling can give, gaining 1d12(average 7, 12 if first level)+Con mod. .....This also makes the difference at level one between spending 0 points or 1 point on HP mathematically almost identical to how it is currently on the Combat Skill Tree (bigger 8 HP gap for the die, but only factoring Con once), while striking a good balance for insuring even people who want to be able to take a bunch of hits don't ignore the rest of the tree. 2. Honestly, a lot of feats might need rebalancing in the context of how many of their effects can be gained though nodes anyway, so that might need to happen over assigning them all different point values. And, at least on the Roleplay tree, feats are less than double the cost of an ability score increase, so getting them there, even if it costs more RP than BP, and you gain less RP than BP per level, might be an effective build strategy to compensate for not all feats being created equal but still want some for roleplaying purposes. Or just to fast track a feat combo by level 2.
@musicman926320 күн бұрын
@@Shalakor1. With this specific system in mind, I don't think feats should be rebalanced to be equal, that would take more time than just assigning a point cost depending on how powerful the feat is. Not every feat needs to be really good or outright broken, some SHOULD be only moderately useful or niche. 2. Could you explain the HP thing again but more clearly? I don't know if it was written poorly or because I was an idiot but either way I didn't understand it.

4:55 "NOCT-U-RNAL" Apart from that, I've seen your previous videos on the classless skill tree and think it's a good idea. I'm just afraid that the tree(s) might become too big and overwhelming or at times maybe even redundant. I'd love to hear your thoughts on a possible level cap. Looking at 5e in particular, I think a cap of 30 would be better for your system. But then you'd maybe also want to slightly lower the XP requirements for a level up. I'm also curious about the combat tree and I don't remember if you touched on this in an earlier video but if you take the combat tree into consideration as well, would a player get 3 skill points PER tree or is that a total? A total would be easier to keep track of but looking at the amount of nodes, the total might have to be increased to 5.
@TheUglyGoblin23 күн бұрын
Haha oh no did I spell it wrong xD ? Oh and for the level points you'd get them in a 5:3:1 ration of Combat:RP:Crafting So you d get the per level for RP and 5 for combat :3 I get the overwhelming part too! Ive been playing since dnd basic, and Im trying to figure out when exactly people stopped caring about everything about the ttrpg except for how many abilities and game action features they can squeeze out of their build I feel like a lot of players could learn more about ttrpg design by playing a pre-3rd edition game, where the most interesting actions you could take were NOT granted by any class feature. And the worth of your character wasnt desperately dependent on your skill list or action economy. Having said that, imo classless skill systems are the way forward and imo allow for more narrative/roleplay freedom
@TheUglyGoblin20 күн бұрын
Mmm I totally agree! That’s why level 1 is kind of my favourite because you have to rely more on your own wits rather that your cool powers and abilities:3 Cool to hear you like the classless concept too :3
@Knightfall819 күн бұрын
@@TheUglyGoblin with your skill system, do you run into the issue that the optimal skill routes people end up taking look identical to what class skill/feature packages are? For context, this is why I prefer 5e's subclasses over 3.5 and PF1e's feat trees - players would end up taking the same combinations of feats to accomplish X, and it always made me go "why are these feats instead of a subclass or prestige class?" Like people who want to play grapplers would take the same array of feats, so it may as well have been just a class, and polearm users always took the same half dozen or so feats, etc. In other words, it doesnt really feel like customizing when your a-la-cart skill selection will be identical to just a class.
@TheUglyGoblin19 күн бұрын
@ I think sure some combos work well for a certain build. But also- due to the Huge variety of builds, and the fact that there are no base classes to build upon with feats, the list of creations you can build are endless and far exceed any number of subclasses that have been made
@TheUglyGoblin19 күн бұрын
Not only that, but these 3 skill trees will only be the “base” for this system. In the future I plan to design many many more optional skill trees like a dark fantasy /horror one, a sci-fi skill tree and many many more. With these you can now use them to add more flavour to your games and have people gain abilities that suit whatever genre of campaign you plan to run. And along with that you can always tweak the ratio of level points and which trees they can assign them in
@Knightfall819 күн бұрын
@@TheUglyGoblin there may be endless combinations, but have you noticed people gravitating toward a similar handful of combinations, due to being TOO against the grain doesn't create a meaningful build? Like here's an example. In 3rd edition you could become skilled in almost everything if you had enough skill ranks. As in, you could spread them out and put a single point into everything... BUT, it was meaningless to do that because you would never have a high enough bonus to beat any given DC check. Same with feats from 3rd and PF, SURE there are millions of potential feat combinations, but only a dozen or so feat combos are *meaningful* to players. Do you see what I'm saying? Im just asking, How much of customization produces meaningful choices?

I broke your system. Using Avenger, Rage, and Extra Attack from the combat tree on the “attacker”, as well as the Foresight spell casted by one of the supporters and Turn the Tides plus Tactician from the RP skill tree, I could give the attacker 8 actions (self-damaging the party w/ quickened Magic Missile to activate Turn the Tides, haste actions only allowing 1 attack), each of which granting the attacker extra attacks, coming to a total of 18 attacks, then if we could dual wielding and Tactician granting bonus actions as well, 22 attacks. Undying rage, max out Adrenaline, and don’t spend a single one for a total of +60 damage to each attack. With two daggers and no magic items, assuming +5 modifier, this comes out to 1485 damage per turn, held up for 3 turns straight without much difficulty. No setup, short rest recharge. Then, if you take your extra points and slap them into Avenger, let’s say 20 so you’ll still have over 150 max HP, then you’d deal an extra 40 damage to a target per ally they damage. If we assume they meteor swarm us, it still doesn’t kill a single player and add a total of +120 damage to the “attacker”s attacks against them, for a 4125 damage round. Avenger isn’t capped, so if this is dealt instead through 3 Fireballs, hitting all 3 of your allies, then this goes to 9405, only expending a short rest recharge resource that you have 3 (or more) of. Then there’s a typo in extra attack that suggests the ability to purchase a 5th attack. This lowers the attacker’s HP by a good 50 or so, but is traded off by an extra few hundred damage. My party will not be implementing this tree. I like the concept, but it’s way too abusable. I found this combo in an hour. I’m sure my players can do a LOT more.
@TheUglyGoblin20 күн бұрын
Haha the thing is, yes you can do a lot of damage, but you have invested in seemingly nothing else. This skill tree does reward hyper focusing on one thing but then, that’s all you can do. I mean you need to invest a loooot of nodes there to get all of this even online :3 there is a lot of set up too. And so if you decide to hyper focus That much in order to achieve that one thing, I say “fair enough” xD you deserve it.
@TheUglyGoblin20 күн бұрын
Really cool to hear you’re implementing it too n_n hope you have fun with it!
@andrewnotrealname84820 күн бұрын
@ That’s the thing, I’ve got rage resistances and over 150 HP, and this is round 1 damage for all but the Avenger numbers. That’s not hyper focused, just a barbarian. Not to mention you can end your range and restart the Undying rage, which adds your unspent adrenaline to the healing you receive. One purchase of Regen and you’re regaining 21 HP a round, with only half of those numbers I got earlier. It’s not hyper focused. It’s got better defenses than a level 20 barb while blitzing 2 tarrasques a round, or it can choose to have equal defenses to a level 20 barb and blitz 4 tarrasques.

With a skill tree it’s much easier to find your own niche. You can actually make a useful investigator that rather than fighting themselves runs the squad by giving up actions after spending the session using your wit to understand the enemy before ever facing it. And would even be incredibly useful for a much more grounded game. All I would have to do is make a few tweaks to how many points they get for each tree. You want to play a lovecraft style game Far fewer points in one tree well a Getting a handful more in a different tree. Suddenly you’re not an OP demigod who can kill an aberration with 2 lucky swings of your holy blade. Now you’re a bunch of skilled normies trying to gtfo out of dodge after being chased by a tentacle zombie.

You’re thinking both too big and too small. You can now keep players week physically for longer without stagnating their character sheet. With just a small tweak in how many points they get for various trees. Haven’t you had a low CR monster that you were inspired by that was just useless after a certain level? For example. Keep them weaker combat wise by just doling out fewer combat points. But let them still have RP points. Now there’s incentive for them to be creative in combat rather than just fall in to the same old pattern of Wizard cast fireball Druid becomes animal and holds concentration on a buff or de-buff Rogue asks if they have sneak attack available Ranger lol, lmao even Barbarian stands and gets hit hard and hit hard back. Fighter hit a lot Monk hit a lot and stun (but never gets to have fun because they are stuck in a choiceless rut) Combat is actually engaging and dynamic with this system. The curse of classes is You can be optimized Or you can have variety but you can’t do both easily. Now as a DM you have more room to build a world for your players rather than pigeon hole them in to their archetypes.
