This also happened in the past, in Haswell era - sort of. It wasn´t about overclocking non-K CPUs, but about B85 chipset allowing overclocking of K CPUs on certain motherboard models. Ofc intel did everything possible to block it. I suppose, that it will happen again, since why would intel then produce "K" CPUs?
@gagarin7773 жыл бұрын
If you look even further into the past then both intel and AMD didn't bother blocking FSB overclocking for cpu's with locked multiplier. Core 2 Duo era cpu's on LGA775 were overclocking like crazy. I've been using this method for past..well, since Ivy Bridge. Up the power limits (since non-K is gimped by default) to ~150W to ensure max boost all the time, up the bclk till the memory is not stable, tweak then repeat etc. You always needed Z board for this, so it wasn't wide spread. BCLK is unlocked by default on Asrock mobos, afaik.

@siberx43 жыл бұрын
My previous system before my current Ryzen 5900x was exactly this; an EVGA X58 board that started with an i7-920 and was later upgraded to an X5670. As you say, you could adjust base clock without disrupting the rest of the system, and I ran the 920 at about 4-4.1GHz and the X5670 at 4.2-4.3GHz (30-50% overclocks depending on how you're counting). The overclock and late 6-core CPU upgrade helped keep that system usable for over 12 (!) years before upgrading to my current rig. Roman makes a great point in this video that the real history of overclocking is not about taking the highest-end parts and pushing them a little bit further (a space that's gotten gradually squeezed out as manufacturers get better at binning their chips right at the limit and having them dynamically adjust to quality) but with taking low-end to mid-range parts and tweaking them up to perform closer to the high- end parts. Classic overclocking CPUs like the i7-920, Celeron 300A, G3258 and others were all "low end" in their price bracket, but that's partly what gave them lots of headroom to hit much higher clocks. Hopefully this kind of overclocking sees a renaissance, but I'm doubtful Intel will allow this kind of thing to stick around for long considering the extra margins they make by flipping a bit on certain chips to make them "overclockable".

I'm guessing only boards with a BCLK generator has the option? at least it was the way for Z170 boards I had
@Fin4L6are3 жыл бұрын
I wonder if even more bclk and lower multipliers will give even more performance. On old cpus with bclk overclock also increased the L3 speed so max bclk was always desirable. Also I'm curious if it increases the RAM speed gear 1 can provide, since bclk should also affect the memory controller. Unlikely... but might be worth trying.

Imagine if msi made something like z690 a pro ddr4 with external clock generator and enabled this to work in the bios. It would be the best thing that's ever happened to overclocking apart from maybe moving from hardware overclocking to bios
@nordlicht18812 жыл бұрын
Just for you to note: MSI actually did this. The board is called the "MSI MAG B660M MORTAR MAX WIFI DDR4" This Board may be B660, but it's got an external clock generator and is able to do BCLK OC for non-K CPU's. Hardware Unboxed also did a video regarding that board and non-K OC.

I have multiple PCs. For my sim racing PC I thought I will upgrade to 3d Cache CPU but I thought those CPUs would come out sooner. So I'm looking at 5800X. But if Intel motherboards will allow OC non K Intel 12th gen CPUs then upgrade to 5800X don't make sense. I hope we can get relatively good MB and i5 and OC the shit out of them.

5800X3D won't be available for purchase anyways..

@@everope Yeah, I know. But I didn't know that a couple of months ago. So now I got a decision to make. Buy 5800 or 5900 OR switch to Intel.

@Transistor Jump For my Sim racing PC? 5800X. I'll buy X3D second hand because it is rapid in sims. HUB tested ACC and it benefits +50%. But their testing is not representative of "normal gameplay". They tested replay. In multiplayer with big grids where there are 60+ cars on track, people are saying they see massive improvement on all possible resolutions / triple screens / VR.
@alpha007org2 жыл бұрын
@Transistor Jump I was once a very active overclocker 1998-2013 (Ivy Bridge was the last one I OCed the shit out of that CPU). Now I don't care anymore. But if you got time, you can get some pretty good results from that CPU. Once again, we live in a good time when competition is doing its thing...

This is really cool, Unfortunately the 12th gen overclocking mobo's (z series) are very expensive right now. Don't see anyone buying one then buying a non-k cpu.

I installed my new 12400F and MSI B660 MAG yesterday, now I'm regretting not buying Z690. Maybe I'll sell this one but Z690 MATX boards are lackluster and ITX too expensive. Have to wait until there's more of them confirmed to support this OC method. Asus ROG Apex is insanely expensive.
@ThunderingRoar3 жыл бұрын
this is cool and all for OCers but not really practical pairing a 200€ cpu with a 500+€ mobo (which is also ddr5 only) for the average consumer

This is fantastic. I had a lot of fun OCing a 6600 non-K but it was never practical to use because of all the other things it broke. I'm sure this will get patched out soon with BIOS updates but the secret is out now. Time to set up a site to archive the old bios versions before they disappear?
@ChrisKadaver3 жыл бұрын
Does this work with DDR4 boards if you're on slower memory like 3000Mhz CL15? The i3 12100f would be the perfect budget cpu at 5Ghz. But it doesn't really make sense if you need a premium board. Then you're better off with a cheap B660 board and a highly clocked cpu out of the box since the boardprices are so high. What will be the cheapest board with these features?

BCLK overclocks can also extract some unreal clock speeds out of AMD CPUs in my experience, albeit to a lesser extent than this. I can almost reach a 104mhz frequency (~103.8250 being my best) and achieve boost clocks nearing 4.825ghz on my personal 3600XT with PBO enabled (up from the advertised 4.5ghz). Unfortunately, stability is far from guaranteed beyond 102.5mhz BCLK so I just run it stock, plus my badly binned infinity fabric would be happy and 1:1 with my 3600mhz RAM. More shocking to me though, I've managed to force an old Athlon II X2 220 to run all the way to 4ghz from 2.8ghz.
@mycosys3 жыл бұрын
The reason this works is Bclock is decoupled form PCIe frequency on these CPUs, it used to be the norm

you should try it on that 2000 board wioth the remote control that changes the BCLK. im willing to bet it will work. instaltly thought of skylake when i saw the bclk overclock. my money is on it will be removed, unless the board has an external clock generator like slylake. i kicked the snot out of a i7-6700 (non k) with bclk overclock on a asus strix z270.

Yeah that was much better. But AMD would have to be competitive to get intel to do such things( like in the cpu market) but they kinda failed in the getting any marketshare part) and don't even have options for what people buy the most, atleast were I live most people look for a cpu around 200 euros.
@photonboy9993 жыл бұрын
*G3258...* I'm having flashbacks of updates to disable overclocking because people were getting too great of a performance boost out of a cheaper CPU. Think that will happen here? I can just see Intel's response: "Since we can't validate the stability of the..." To which I respond "Uh, don't you void the WARRANTY already for overclocking on any CPU?"

As the 12600 (non-K) has the same core count and config and has a higher base clock to begin with and a better igpu for encoding i wonder if that would get the same or better results when overclocked.
