There are many, many boating/sailing/liveaboard channels on youtube, but this one is surely the best one. Maya has so many astonishing talents, skills, and so much knowledge of various subjects, that the resulting videos should be archived for generations to come. Thank you so much for having undertaken this adventure, and having expertly documented it for our enjoyment.

Thanks, Maya, for the bit of Mediterranean fusion music--if that is the genre--an artful way of signaling and softening the upcoming shift to an East-West cultural environment (if not right away) Always the artist, What a treat.

I have finally remembered to post that your jingle reminds me of the Forestry Forest jingle (a fellow Canadian). He began using it maybe two years ago. He is definitely a Renaissance man and worth a view, lol - in your 'spare' time, when you have a signal and can download a few. Still enjoying your efforts and may catch up shortly 🙂

Basel is 250 meters above sea level, from there to the mouth of the Rhine it is 1000 kilometers - this results in an average gradient of 25 cm per kilometer. That corresponds to 0.025% - so almost nothing. So don't worry about that. Lucky traveling and thanks a lot for your very, very symphatetic storys which I follow every Friday. I am looking foreward watching you passing the famous Loreley-Rock.

Yay! The Rhein! ❤ It would be so sad to know you passing by so many beautiful historic towns without visiting at least a little bit, so I recommand you some of them particulary! I know you are futher down the river now than this episode shows, but wherever you are in this moment, take the time to visit!!! You'll not come back so soon to these historic places! And my recommandations are only those really placed on the coast of the Rhine: -Strasbourg, cathedral with the gigantic medival clock, the center of the town is remarquable!!! -Speyer, for its roman cathedral, so important in german history... -Mainz 👍 -Bacherach!! ***** Very beautiful little wine town. The part of the Rhein from Mainz to Koblenz is the most beautiful section, but very challenging in navigation! And high above your heads will be a castle on nearly every hill! I lived there for two years... I so look forward to when you're passing the "Lorelei"! Take care... And then: -Koblenz -Bonn -Kölln (cathedral 👍) And so on... so many things to see... I can't wait for next friday's episode! Many greetings from here... .... to Magic Carpets Crew 😊

You made me discover some of the most beautiful places of Besançon and Dole where some of my family members enjoy their lifes. I wish you a good finish and don't forget to wear a sweat-shirt near the end, it's getting cold out there. Here in Minnesota I've taken a canoe through the locks on the MIssissippi many times. They are large and built to accommodate barge traffic. Never had a problem. I think their size may actually allow for the currents to be less of a factor than if they were smaller. Happy travels MC crew.

I loved the fast playback of the locks. IIRC the German language has a word for that "Zeitraffer" which I find more appropriate than time lapse. It means something like to rush through time.
@hauke36444 жыл бұрын
Didn't know there are locks in the Rhein. Anyway you may find even larger "schleuses" in the very north of Germany at the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal. Currently, all boats there are processed together with even large ships. That's impressive!

maya & aladino, really enjoyed this episode! I found something written by charles chapman & I thought you & aladino would appreciate it. Here goes: I can liken life before you...to that of a ship w/it's prow pointed toward the great ocean as it leaves the harbor for the distant shore. Storms may come & they will, for no ship ever sailed the seas but had to face the storm. If it is strong from keel to top, from bow to stern, well maintained & intelligently directed, it rides the storm & goes its way. So you will meet obstacles, storms. If you are strong in faith, clear headed, honest, trusting for divine guidance & w/a character built on solid rock, you will meet all troubles in life victoriously! (i found this to be quite appropriate)

Do you have an AIS transponder ? On the Rhine River this will increase safety as you will appear on all the commercial barges radar+AIS display as an identifiable sailing boat. The river is currently at VERY low waters, with a very low debit, no worries about flow and speed but mind the sand banks ! The interior of every curve is a strand. A good hint is to follow (at distance) a commercial barge and for sure when it does change side of the river by using its blue panel to cross opposite traffic starboard on starboard ("green on green"), follow him and make sure the arrangement is well understood by opposite traffic. VHF is key. Failing to follow the usual path will end up with you stumbling upon opposite traffic in a collision course as upstream commercial barges always use the inner curve side to get less flow against them. Happy zig-zagging at each curvature change ! :-) Spot the blue panel at distance, if no downstream commercial barge to follow. The Lorelei curves (Oberwesel - Sankt Goar) are the most tricky part as the curves are sharp and upstream commercial barges may need the full width to get through. It might make sense to take a pilot onboard. An alternative is to very carefully study the map, sand banks, the channels and be aware of the very specific vessel traffic management system in operation there : it is managed by Oberwesel Revierzentrale and there are optical signals (Wahrschausignale) showing instructions telling you for instance you will suddenly stumble upon a longer than 110 m pushtow after the curve. It can also tell you "immediate stop". Stop at an upstream marina and talk with the locals to make sure you got it right before entering this area. People telling you nightmares about the flow could have been right if it was in high waters period, then Magic Carpet would have been flying through it like a bullet :-) On the Rhine river you will be able to see big commercial barges on the anchor for the night (or even during the day), it is quite unusual anywhere else in Europe :-) About anchor, in case of any mechanical problem with Magic Carpet, immediately get out of the channel and drop the anchor. If no luck and your are stuck inside the channel, immediately warn all traffic on VHF 10 as downstream commercial barges could need multiple kilometers to slow down or arrange an avoiding manoeuver with upstream traffic.
