This Chevy Caprice Auction Win is Nicer Than I Expected

I bought this Chevy Caprice from a charity auction and with any auction car, you just don't know what you're gonna get. This one, despite needing some work actually turned out to be a pretty great car.

Great episode! It's amazing what we took for granted back then and people didn't seem to realize how well built these cars were. Only now with new cars having so many problems with computer dominated systems, failing multi speed transmissions and overall poor reliability do we genuinely appreciate this old caprice's qualities.

I have to agree. Performance wise modern technology may be better (when they work), but in terms of reliability, repairability, and when America still produced full sized luxury category, to my mind the 90s was the last era of cars I enjoy to drive.

@@benkleschinsky -- The simplicity & durability of a front-engine/rear-drive body on frame design cannot be beaten. 1996 was the end of the full-size GM cars (Caprice/Impala, Roadmaster and Fleetwood) because the plant where they made them - in Arlington, TX - was retooled to produce more trucks and SUVs. I guess I am old-school......hoping that Chevrolet will resurrect the 2-door Biscayne. LOL!

I miss the old B-Body cars. Pretty much was the last of old technology for GM in the 90's. 2000's brought in the W body replacement Impala(I sold a million of them), but no comparison.

When I was a deputy sheriff many years ago, a friend of mine was a cop in one of our town departments. He had a 1996 Caprice as his patrol car (we only had Ford Crown Vics for marked cars & front-drive Impalas for detectives). He almost cried when they retired it in 2005 with 120,000 miles on it. It had a 5.7L (350) V8 and was FAST!! No Ford in our fleet could catch it. We had about 220 hp in our Crown Victoria sedans, but the 9C1 Caprice had 275!!

I am also a former LEO and an acquaintance of mine was a Louisiana State Trooper from Troop B. When LSP retired the Caprice and went CV he was so disappointed. Those CC's were fast, comfortable and dependable but it makes sense. The CC's were higher operating cost in almost any setting. The bigger engine and higher HP was great for the rare occasion but for standard use, shift after shift, day after day, week after week, the operating cost does add up.

@@ezioassassain -- It was essentially a detuned (by about 20 horsepower) 350 - 5.7L - Corvette engine. I think the difference may have been the intake, cam timing and exhaust......but they shared most of the same internals. The venerable "small block" Chevy V8 dates back to 1955 and is still used in brand new Silverado trucks and the Corvette Stingray today!

Soft cushy cars can be SO rewarding. Nowadays every car is obsessed with handling, and that's only something you're going to notice maybe 10 percent of the time, at best. Cushy and comfy rewards you the other 90!

Thanks so much my friend and thanks for following along too. The whitewalls that I put on the Caprice are the stock 215/75/15 but the car could have also been optioned with the larger 225/70/15. Tire prices recently have gone nuts and inventory is scarce on these oddball sizes so I was happy to get these for around $100 each.

You said you purchased the tires from Walmart can you share the make and/or name of the tires? Ie: Yokohama Road warrior…I’d like to get a set for my 96 Roadmaster Sedan. I just bought a 95 that sat for a while and was a rats nest. I had to take the dash all apart and get the mice poop out of it. Also mice were in the headliner. I’ve cleaned it out and still have work to do. I noticed that your ABS light was on just like mine is on. I haven’t tried to figure it out yet. It is OBDI and I can’t get any codes yet. But it rides like your on a cloud and can’t feel the road. My boy drives it everywhere. He now knows what a real car is. Lol. These were some of the best cars that GM made. They should have stuck with this setup. And so should all of the big three. If they’d just stuck with what they knew best they wouldn’t have made so much junk.

I believe you could find a pretty cheap laminating machine for those plates, or just use some clear plastic sealing tape to waterproof them

I’ve seen these plastic folder type sleeves at Manheim Auctions that take the copy which you shut and you can screw them directly to the plate holder and they are waterproof

Get a pack of transparent 8x11 sleeves from stationary department at Walmart. You can use that for placing the temp tags on the car, they will protect it from rain, and resue them.

Fantastic car!! I had a 1991 Caprice Wagon. I had it for 175,000 miles. So many family vacations hauling around all our kids items. And it was so comfortable!!! Smooth ride!! All your comments are spot on. One of the best cars GM made.

I'm happy to see you are helping save this car. I inherited my Grandparents 1991 Caprice Classic in 1995 as my first car. They bought it new in August of 1990. I am still enjoying it today! It is a great car and has been extremely reliable and easy to maintain over the past 26 years. It doesn't see daily driving anymore and gets stored in the winter. My kids LOVE riding around in the "Big Old Chevy"!

This car was having an amazing sound when i was 11-12years old in 2001 ,02. I was at Bahrain.The rich Arabic people used to drive there.Very fast cars .I think they run on diesel.

I love 80’s and 90’s cars, so do a lot of people, and prices are rising quite high on cars from these eras that look and run like yours. If you wrap it in Suran wrap and smooth it out and poke the bolts through before installing it will keep plastic smooth so it's still readable. Nice Car.

That's a sure sweet ride that was my first choice when I wanted to buy a car but I could not afford and when I could it was no longer available so I had to go to the Crown Vic just as good, keep doing what you love man, I just finally got my 2019 Ford Ranger that i bought from a auction, that was at the body shop for 5 months and I'm enjoying it I got it for low miles and when I made the math is still came under what used one would have cost me, especially with new and used cars being marked up ,the best part is I'm not stuck with some six to seven year plan on payments, registration says registered owner as me and not some Financial Institute stay healthy and keep the videos coming thanks man✌

You better hold on to it and I've got the 4.3 v8 as well. It is the LS model the same as the one you have but I've got leather seats. Now here's the downfall of the gm b bodies THE OPTI SPARK. It's just so ridiculous how many times I've replaced it. Just a word of advice LS swap is the best thing you can do to a b body. It's always good to see someone enjoy an older car. Take care of it you have a classic

That is a beautiful Caprice with a nice color, it is sad how rare these have become... I had a 91 as my daily driver for 12 years, I think the cloth interior of the 91-93 models were much more better looking.

I had a 96 Roadmaster with the velour (mouse fur) interior limited slip differential. White with the blue faux convertible top. Nice riding, I found the low speed steering excellent. 25 mpg on the highway 15 city when I wasn’t punching it. One of the few cars I would buy back

It would be a decent deal at $4000 fees included.. Still all fixed up it will be a good example.. It has to have those mini dents pulled out by a magic dent puller.. New carpets if you can find them... But that colour, look, smoothness is very, very nice... Funny how it has matured into something elegant... I'd like to see an estate wagon version...

I had a 94 with the 5.7~ it was magical, but the trans wans't up to the task of all that power & in 2000 it died of transmission failure that I was unwilling to fix~ it was a police car that I bought for 4 grand, so I didn't want to put any real money in it. I had NO idea how valuable these things would be 20 years later. I always wondered how the smaller V8 compared if you tried both.

With the paper tags, find an old liscence plate and tape the paper plate to it with box tape. Or u can use cardboard as a backing.

The Caprice turned out great! I'm a bit skeptical about the price back east for these though over here on the west coast leather and the 5.7 LT1 caprices and roadmasters with posi rear ends go for what you paid at auction. But hopefully if you've sold this already you got what you were hoping for, either way love how the caprice turned out.

The "chip" in the key is actually a resistor and there are only 14 possible resistor values. I've seen guys who needed a second set of keys (but didn't want to pay the higher price) disconnect the wires that go to the cylinder and solder their own resistor between the wires so that any properly cut key would work...

Hey there my friend! Thank you for the kind words and I really appreciate that. I've been using compound and polish from 3M. I comes in a dark blue bottle and one cap is white while the other is blue. I get it from a NAPA paint supply shop near me. It's super pricey but I really like how it works. I have a DA polisher from Amazon and an assortment of foam pads and it always seems to get me nice results.

What a beautiful car! So awesome! I'm itching for a 1996 - but of course I want the 9C1. Either way, you've got a stunning example of a Caprice. Those cars use to be everywhere - I remember police depts refurbishing them in the late 90s because they didn't want to convert to the now classic Crown Victoria. Awesome job saving this one before it became a parts car.

I'm pretty sure there is no chip in the key, although GM did want you to think so. It just uses some resistance across a couple of contacts. And if it's not the one that expects, it doesn't work. Easily defeated
