I’m a Cambodian who used to work in Singapore for months and still visit regularly, and let me tell you that Cambodia will never be what Singapore is. We're not lucky to get the geographical jackpot (Strait of Malacca), and we don't have the decades of political stability and strong human resources that Singapore had in the 20th century (Civil War and Genocide, which set us back to the dark ages). We’re way behind in public transport and efficiency, and our infrastructures are still miles away. But this airport might boost the country’s GDP enormously if they do it right. We’re a small country trying to develop our infrastructure in any way we can, and China, Japan, South Korea, and even Singapore are our biggest infrastructure investors. We’re currently on the right path to grow rapidly despite many problems and challenges that must be addressed (which country doesn’t?). As a long-time fan, I’m so happy that B1M covered the project extensively, and my last request to the people in the comments is to please experience the country itself and not judge based on what you hear on the internet. Things are much better now in Cambodia, and we’re improving quickly. I hope my country gets at least the benefit of the doubt before you start bashing it. Thanks

Not to mention one of the main reasons Singapore was able to be what it is is their British derived legal system and Anglo integration, which made facilitating and engaging with the other financial service centers of the world at the time (Hong Kong, NYC, and London) very frictionless. Cambodia has neither those language nor those legal roots.

It's unrealistic to compare Cambodia to Singapore. Maybe next Thailand. Cambodia faces numerous fundamental challenges that cannot be solved simply by building an airport or improving infrastructure. These issues must be addressed before Cambodia can aspire to reach a fraction of Singapore's level of development.

Agreed. Singapore, Qatar, Hong Kong and the UAE all had well respected international airlines before they built their massive hub airports. Cambodia doesn't have one (yet). They will need to really push hard with their airline/s to compete against these giants. Also Hong Kong had a strong finance industry and the middle east had oil money. Macau's main income comes from all the taxes that the casinos pay. During the pandemic Macau closed its borders and the casinos basically went into limp mode. Meaning the the economy practically collapsed in Macau. Though the government had such a large stack of money that they kept people in the country* happy with stimulus packages and yearly pay outs of money. This meant of course that the economy on paper collapsed even more. Though after Macau opened again to the rest of the world the economy quite quickly jumped back into high gear. Tourists are flowing back into Macau now and therefore the tax dollars to the government is also flowing back in again. Basically the economy of Macau is simply returning to where it should be and quickly. Therefore the 27% increase. It will slow down as soon as the economy more or less gets back to the 2019 level and returns to normal growth.

Imagine if we could build something like this airport here in America for just $1.2 billion dollars. They spend more on NFL football stadiums than they did on this airport.

"Temperatures in PP frequently rise as high as 40 degrees". They really don't. Average highs are 34, average is 31, which is really - you don't need to exaggerate.

not sure why countries try to ape being the next Singapore, aside from the fact it's a city state and really not possible to replicate for 99% of countries, as that brings it's own unique social , economic dynamics , the question is dubious is why you would even chose to wish to copy it Singapore is fundamentally quite dull

Even if the city scores a spectacular rise like Singapore, it will still have to feed the countryside, which Singapore does not have to.

Nearly three quarters of the population still live on less than US$3 a day, based on World Bank's data. Poverty is largely concentrated in the rural areas though urban poverty is also on the rise. I wonder who this project will help.

The ‘mega project solution’ is a phrase I’ve now coined. You can’t ‘build it and they will come’ until the wider economy is prosperous to a certain extent. Exactly like Egypt are doing, and how China have done across the country building ghost cities. This looks great, but it’s also landing in the same category as those other mega projects in areas that don’t yet have the infrastructure already and local economy already to support it. Dubai and Singapore managed it because of heaps of money that didn’t dry up before the tipping point. Good luck to them and all, but I can’t help but see a pattern

Would need a schengen style agreement in ASEAN, to really meet its potential. It cannot just rely on chinese tourist travel. To break out of the middle income bracket, it'd need a robust business travel market too.

Siem Reap also has a huge new airport about 50km from the city when it already had a perfectly functioning one much closer. When I was there earlier this year there were only 3 flights in the new airport. It is just another potential Chinese military base.
