The warranty information of any manufacturer for any computer part or peripheral always has a clause that voids the warranty immediately if Linus is ever within 10 feet of it, unless there is a locked door with no window between him and the product at all times.

Spilling water on un-powered electronics is really no big deal at all. As stated in the video, all is well if completely dry before putting anything together and powering on. Now spilling a Cola on the mobo is something to freak out a little bit about; immediate power down, disassemble, rinse with generous amounts of filtered water, and the drying process.

Water is still a problem. Although it can dry, and can't short circuit the board if there's no power.... the water still will leave behind moisture under chips and initiate slow corrosion of the board, which could take weeks or months, and will still cause issues down the line. You'd still want to rinse with alcohol.

Without special placeholder on retension mechanism, the cpu wouldn't get enough tension&lose contact with pads. And only oil surrounding the dies will be heated at first, and won't get optimized result in a long run. It'd be like submerging a shower head spraying hot water in a tub filled with lukewarm water.

I once spilled a glass of water down the top vents of my tower, while it was running. The mobo and videocard were soaked... Nothing broke. I think keeping dry is more precautionary and safe, than water being certain death.

well technically according the book you are supposed to, but I never have if I'm cleaning off a heat spreader to apply new paste. it's more of a guideline then a rule. I mean technically when working on hardware you are supposed to be wearing a wrist strap to ground yourself too, but I don't know to many people who do that anymore.

in germany the law is written in a way that the company would have to prove that the damage was caused by the customer(like for example through those liquid damage detection stickers) but breaking a warranty void seal is of course not prove that the customer broke it.

When you go to attach the water lines just hold the motherboard upside down and keep both hoses upright as you attach them. It's the easiest way to do it without draining the loop.

Out of curiousity, why didn't you attach the fittings to block off the bench when you just had the 2 tubes in your hand. You could have avoided water on board issue if you just attached to block then mounted it on the CPU. I do contracting work if you need anymore advice ;)

Direct die is the way to go of you got the balls! I did this a few years ago with a Arctic Liquid Freezer 120 to try to get my hot 3570k cooled down. I was unable to keep it below 80c above 4.4ghz. I direct died it and was able to get 4.7ghz stable and 4.8ghz at 90c. Not sure if I would build a custom loop to be able to do this with my 8700k. The difference in rigidity between the 3570k and 8700k PCB is hugely in favor of the 3570k. No way could I pull off a custom spacer for the 8700k without risking bowing the PCB. What we need is a direct die air cooler!
