One of the current problems with RS3 is that better graphics = longer development time. Your budget is a pie, the bigger the graphics slice, the smaller the content slice gets. Maybe not all at once, but eventually instead of spending 2 days on a new set of armor, it gets to 5 to uphold the standard... You see where I'm going? Better graphics is not all good news

The problem with switching between different eras of graphic is that anytime they add any new content, they have to design it for every single era. That could mean modeling a character could take 3x or 4x longer, depending on how complicated the models get with higher quality graphics

Yeah, keeping the 0.6 tick based system was a mistake. I am aware that they need to start over with a new game engine from scratch since everything depends on their decades old tick system. Theys hould have made a brand new game engine instead of building upon the old Runescript code, we could have gotten WSAD movement, a bigger world, optional first person mode, better player models, better graphics and a better combat system.

I’ve been saying this for years. The outdated graphics, while nostalgic for some, are offputting for many new players. The *option* for updated graphics that changes nothing about the game is a no brainer. Great analogy with the Minecraft shaders. Speaking of first-person, the OSRS minecraft mods piqued my attention because of this. Without changing the game mechanics, this would offer another way to experience the game world while not effecting the gameplay at all.

You say this doesn't affect other players but it would, because then you would psychologically compare how your game looks with other people's texture packages and notice the differences. If everyone is playing a different game to each other there is no cohesiveness anymore. It would also make it harder for them to market the game because any official content they show would look different to the versions everyone else are playing. And obviously people would mod it so heavily, they would create almost completely different games running ontop of the RS engine

This is the direction we thought RS was going pre EOC. I’ve been playing since 2001 and I can tell you that the graphics always needed improvement. It was when Jagex changed the combat and overall gameplay/micro transactions/wildy that turned everyone off. If they want to keep servers running the old graphics like they did with RSC then keep that, but having high Rez like this would be amazing!!

Aaron Lister combat change was necessary. Rs2 was bleeding players and developers had run out of meaningful ways to create content for the game because of its limited combat system. They went about it totally wrong though. What they should have done; was reworked the engine and ditched the tick system and just made a NEW mmo, a sequel, so they can re-market it and start fresh with no experiences while leaving RS2 intact for those that still enjoyed it.

People disliking without actually watching the video where he explains he wants to eventually add different graphical options for people that want the game to look like it does in the video, like it did in 2010, and like it currently looks in OSRS, but with a higher framerate. This project is actually really incredible. The amount of work that has gone into it really shows the authors dedication and love for the game. I really hope that Jagex is willing to work with him in order to get this running without being crushed by the bot detection system. Always weird to me when people are really against projects like this. If it gets release, you don't have to use it. Just like if you are against RuneLite, you don't have to use that either. As long as it's not giving people ridiculous advantages, we should be supportive of the creativity and enthusiasm of these projects.

@@Zeltroix RS3 is not the same. You start in taverly now. The whole intro to the game is horrible. The smithing/mining rework is lame AF. The MTX are shoved down your throat. The economy is so fucking inflated. Playing on legacy puts you at a disadvantage of slower dps/xp rates. Double xp weekends ruin the grind for 99s and make them way less valuable and feel less rewarding. People stack up on protean items and wait for DXP weekends and everyone gets 99s that weekend. It is not the same game and it's only the same game to autistic retards.

This needs to be released. It's just unfortunate that roughly 1 in 8 people dislike this (at the time of writing), something that has literally no impact on them whatsoever, and only want to deny other people from having their minds blown by these amazing graphics, first person PoV, nighttime mode, etc. The 4 main reasons people have been raging about this: thinking that Jagex develop it (they don't) so it would take Jagex devs away from other projects (it wouldn't, this is a fan project, clientside only), 2: "Don't force these graphics on us! Just go play RS3!" when it was clearly stated several times in the video that this is a fanmade client that nobody can make you use; it is 100% optional, 3: "This version looks bad, I want the 2008/2011/some other version of graphics back!" when the creator of this client clearly said multiple times in the video that he's making different HD versions to emulate the 2008 era graphics, the 2011 era graphics, and others, and 4: "x feature is missing, disliked!" when the developer clearly said multiple times in the video that it's a work in progress & that not everything has been added yet.

I really think this implementation is necessary for OSRS's future. I've always loved the RSHD days when HD graphics first became a thing with the swiveling loading screen, those were my favorite days in Runescape. I had finally gotten good at the game and could really enjoy some of the further content in the game. Updated graphics for the client-side browser would be an amazing improvement to the overall feel of OSRS, and would keep it from feeling like a 13-year old game.

I really love the idea of being able to choose different graphics. I personally would like to use the updated old school style. However... I think that allowing first-person WASD movement would compromise the integrity of the game itself. Instead of the client finding the best path from one grid to another, the whole game would have to update to account for more free movements from such a system. It would definitely change the way PVP is done, but I don't believe it would be for the better... Instead of a player moving at only 90 and 45-degree angles, someone using WASD would be able to move at any angle they wanted to which might end in many glitches, abuse, and unfair advantages.

I think first person mode wouldn't be a bad thing to have. WASD controls wouldnt be hard to incorporate, being that it'd be dependant on your characters direction. W would move you one tile forward. S would move you one tile backward by turning around and moving 1 tile forward. But I think first person point and click would be pretty cool. It would be very disadvantageous, though, as you can only walk(click) as far as you can click from a height of ~5 feet off the ground. It wouldn't need to account for much though, as you're still clicking a tile and moving to that tile.

It sucks that people are putting down his project saying "how is this any different than rs3/eoc?". People acting like they don't have the choice to use it or not. I remember this being some peoples problem with other content. Do those people not realize that osrs and rs3 share similar content? Look at anglerfish, that's rocktails. Cerberus boots, that's Glacor boots. Zulrah, kinda feels like QBD to me Zenyte jewelry, Hydrix jewelry in rs3 And it goes the other way too.(there's also many more that i can't think of right now) Rs3 released "raids" but that was literally just 2 boss fights, then osrs released their raids that were actual raids which then led to "Elite Dungeons" on Rs3 which play out more like the osrs ones. In the first Elite dungeon, the final boss has mechanics quite similar to olm. Some different but similar. Osrs released the twisted bow so rs3 got the ability to use the hexhunter bow outside DG. Gives 12.5% damage boost against magic classed enemies and +10% hit chance. Only difference is that rs3 also got melee and magic equivalents, the terrasaur maul (obtained from Anachronia, Aka fossil island which osrs released before.) and the Inquisitor staff which just came with the new Archaeology skill. The games are always going to be connected but osrs is never going to turn into rs3. They work with each other i'm sure. They clearly get ideas from each other but know not to cross a certain line when it comes to osrs. And the osrs team has been releasing great content and the models for raids and the inferno look beautiful. You can tell it's a new style within a style that they've struck and i think it would be cool to see those creations in HD. Eventually osrs will have to expand weapon level requirements but i believe they'll take it slowly and introduce level 80, 82, 85, 88, 87, ect over the course of years. Kind of drip feeding it. And if they don't go that route then i can see them just releasing more level 75 weapons and armor with more unique special attacks and effects. That's one thing osrs has on rs3 by a long shot, unique gear options. I play both games but one thing that used to bum me out about rs3 was the gear all felt the same with little reason to use a different weapon besides tier, damage type, and a few abilities dependent on 2h or dual wield. However when invention came out, it gave you the choice to add special effects to your weapons for what you like to do. Obviously there's some BiS perks but the point is that it gave more value to gear switching and optimization. But what i'm trying to say is that yes osrs will change and things might seem strange at first but they will never turn it into what rs3 is. That would make no sense from a financial standpoint. They have their nostalgic game and their modern ability based game so why would they aim to make them the same. To me the true biggest difference between the two is the combat and how the weapon/armor stats work. So having the choice to play with enhanced graphics doesn't make it like rs3.

As someone who's played since 2002, personally I'd never use it. I love the klunky simplicity and real attraction for me personally is in the grind and feeling of achievement once I reach my goals. That being said, this shit looks beautiful. He did a hell of a job with it, and it could be quintessential to the long term survival of the game. I dont mind if this is an option for other players. But keyword, option.. I dont want it to become RS3. I dont think any of us do, and having personally experienced the changes that figuratively ruined the game.. it think keeping it optional, is an integral part of the appeal for us older nostalgic players. Although I wouldn't mind using this mode when I'm doing some seriously AFK grinds for shits n giggles. Full support.

It's not *as hard* as you'd think. It's still difficult, but as long as the languages are on a similar level, it's not too bad. Java is already pretty easy to work with once you're taught object-oriented coding, so to change into something else isn't hard, as long as the new language isn't losing functionality. It's incredibly time consuming, and definitely amazing that he's doing this, but its easier than making it from scratch.

C# is pretty similar to java so it the design should be transcribable. I think the harder part is rewriting it for a different Game Engine. Tho I got 0 experience in making video games. Its still a crazy project for one person, just the amount of code and tests that need to get rewritten... And a different environment means new bugs for one guy to solve.

This is everything I ever wanted and more. I was happy when I heard OSRS was released and while I've been loving OSRS Mobile and enjoying my new Ironman account, I did miss the new graphics since I pretty much quit RS around a year after the updated graphics were first released and I absolutely loved it back then. I still remember when I first logged in to Paterdomus after the graphics and lighting update and was just in awe at how cool and spooky it all looked. I tried RS3 but there was so much lore, zone, and character changes that I completely missed out on that I honestly felt left out. On top of the fact that my favorite minigames were practically empty all of the time. I sincerely hope this gets approved. OSRS is already an awesome game but if it had these graphics it would by far be my favorite MMORPG again

In order to keep this game running in the long term, an updated graphics option will be needed . (While still having the option to keep the original graphics ) I don’t think a third party client is the best way to implement this though. Jagex would have to introduce it on the main client .

But before you attack me on disagreeing, this isn't because it ruins "nostalgia" or it doesn't fit the whole old school feel. I just think it can be much cleaner. I know this is just only a preview and things will eventually get cleaned up (he did mention that he wants to have different presets which is cool because maybe some people would have different preferences such as RSHD textures). Don't get me wrong, I think this can make a huge impact on the player base if executed and done right. He is most definitely in the right direction. I'm thrilled to see more from him and the progression of the project!
